Is a program to free up ram for XP really needed?

You all should know, a quick ninja like Rikimaru has a slow computer. The utter sound of the name of the brand makes PC people drop to the floor. Anyway my computer has it's slowdowns and seems like other programs are zapping up it's ram. Yeah I do use task manager to End Task programs, but seems it dosen't do much of a job.

I was wondering if it would be usefull to have a program to free up ram, but I hear Windows XP does a good job of doing that stuff automatically. So I was wondering if it's worth downloading one for a XP.

I'd say not really. If a program needs extra ram it takes on the already existing pool of the Memory, which is the page file and the amount of ram you have. If it needs more, it will take from processes using the Memory. I've tried all sorts of free ram programs, and I didn't see any performance change.

They should be used if you have a problem with a program taking all the ram, or if you have memory leaks issues(had explorer take 1.6 gb once... damn)

Post your specs please :P Perhaps I could give some advice on software or hardware you should acquire.

I used to use WinRam turbo.

I was running a game server with a memory leak.

Those programs are very useful in conjunction with P2P software and also for spotting memory leaks in games (usually found after a patch).

I suggest you should setyour computer to the setting for proformance only, and increase your pagefile to 2.5x installed RAM. Make sure the page file inital and max number the same size.

I use a program called FreeRAM XP Pro, and it works great.  It optimizes you computers memory and gives you a little number in the bottom corner of your computer so you can keep an eye on how much it free.  How much memory do you get back when you optimize it.  I've noticed that on a number of machines here at work that have 1 gig of memory it lowers the amount being used by 100mb on a consistent basis.  The nice thing too is that you can set it up to automatically run when you start your computer.  It's a free program so look it up in a search engine.
