Final Fantasy XI, Squares newest installment to the great thing that is known as Final Fantasy. First off Id like to say, so far this game has BLOWN my mind! Its incredible, from character advancement. To the multiple missions and quests that you can do. It truly is a game, that if you can get into it will blow you away! In my review I will go thro and touch on some of the pros, and even the cons of this game. So lets get started.
GAMEPLAY (10/10)
What can I say, its final fantasy! With this being said you are bound to find a great game! The game is absolutely incredible..the gameplay is solid. Much like every other MMOPRPG the game play is extensive. Meaning you can, and if your willing to WILL find a lot of things to do! Say you wanna be a crafter, you can be just that! You wanna just be a fisher? Heck you can even do that. The job classes in the game are awesome. They rage from dragoons, to white mages, to summoners..to even the classic black mage. The list is almost endless I think they did a incredible job, of bringing back every class. That has been apart of the final fantasy series. All the job classes, most of them. Are from squares Game Final Fantasy Tactics. What about partys some might ask? Well partying in this game is great. Later on in the game it truly becomes essential, to party up. Heck the other day I saw 20 Japanese players fighting a behemoth! Was really incredible!
GRAPHICS (10/10)
Graphics..I give them a perfect 10! Everything is well done. From the weather effects, to the character designs just everything is SO Breathe taking! Granted if you don't have a card that can handle the game, you wont think so much of it yourself. Take my word on it tho, it truly is incredible looking. In my opinion anyway.
CONTROLS (8/10)
Controls..well the controls are alright. They're fairly well done. The only complaint many people would have, is having to manage the camera. Which at times can, and will become a pain. As it doesn't lock onto your character hence you'll have to reset it a lot. Other then the camera, I think the controls are fairly well done. For a company that has done mostly console games there entire existence.
SOUND AND MUSIC (10/10)
Wow, I mean wow. This game takes all the great points from every final fantasy and throws them all into one box. What could you expect tho, its Square! They have a great way of making a game sound incredible! I have been at this game since the release, and I have yet to turn the sound down. Or even turn it off, to me it has a sound that you could never get tired of.
Conclusion
To buy or not to buy? BUY BUY BUY! If you are a fan of Final Fantasy, or so much more Square then BUY! You will not be let down. If your a fan of MMPORPGs BUY BUY BUY! This game to me will not disappoint anyone who fare these types of games. From interacting with people to everything else. You truly cant go wrong.

I agree Rick. FFXI is a great MMORPG! There are things that I would love to see done better but doesn't. No game will ever meet all of my expectations.
On the subject of ratings close to SWG. NOTHING COULD SUCK AS MUCH AS SWG!! Bugs, Bugs, Bugs. That's all there is to SWG. Trust I played a ton and now wish I could get that time and money back!

Yeah, I posted this review because I heard that FFXI was getting flamed alot here. Oh well, I'll keep posting good stuff to balance the bad stuff people post. It seems only fair, right?

If you read my original comments on FFXI, you'll see I hardly "flamed" the game. I offered up several (though by no means all) of my reasons for cancelling my subscription and ended with something to the effect of "it wasn't for me, but it's not a bad game." You, on the other hand, offer up a retarded wankfest over how AMAZING the game is, giving 10 stars in every department. Tell me, friend... how does FFXI get a 10 in graphics? Does it look better than UT2004? How about Max Payne 2? And sorry kids, but the UI is TERRIBLE. If you really want to make a point, I suggest you start grammar flaming, AND FAST!
I think mmorpgs should have a seperate topic in reviews just for mmorpgs called staying power... like replayability for a single player game but much more important for an mmorpg. MMORPGS act as if you are supposed to play them for a long period of time, but some of them give you no reason whatsoever and some are just single player games with no replayability but that have been stretched by repeating monsters and making levels really far apart.
Alot of mmorpgs that get good reviews even by magazines are really utterly crap... Thats because they look good on the surface with what seems like a wealth of things to do but then you realize after playing for 5 minutes that each thing you can do doesn't change from lowest point to the highest and gets boring really fast... And some of the things you thought were different choices were actually VERY similar...

I gotta agree that the UI isnt that great since you cant really customize it but it is really easy to use and learn, but is different. Most MMO's offer all the commands you need at several places on the screen. Personally I prefer FFXI's approach to a ui, I would rather have a small area to use for all the commands instead of racing my mouse all over the screen. Plus the menu style UI makes it easy to use with just the keyboard.
As for graphics, Hell yeah the graphics are better than UT2004, Ive played it and I must say that there is nothing mind blowing about it. HL2 will top FFXI but not UT2004. If you run FFXI at a non-standard resolution, it is a beautiful game. IMO the only game that competes is Lineage 2 but there are too many clip plane glitches in that game, of course it is still in beta so upon release tho may be ironed out.
The only thing I would have liked to see out of the game is a seamless world rather than zone aligned. I would also agree that the limited customizability of character appearances can be bothersome but I have learned to live with it and the models are so amazing that I never get tired of seeing the same armors over and over again.
The graphics are nice for an MMORPG, especially the character models at higher resolutions, but they can't hold a candle to most new PC games. The landscapes, in particular, are flat and lifeless. Go ahead and enjoy them for what they are, but don't pretend that they're even on the same level as a game like UT2004 (or even an older RPG like Morrowind.)

Kriminal made a great point several posts ago. MMORPGs should be rated as such and not as normal games. In terms of graphics and control, they aren't going to match up well, but they certainly have merits of their own (which, I assume, is why we're all here.)
Certainly that isn't a jab at me!

Ok I was a little aggressive when I made that last post but I am prepared to defend my statement. But I will from here on use the appearance of a game rather than the graphics.
Special Effects
IMO FFXI blows UT2K4 out of the water here, their special effects are fresha and use techniques that I have never seen in many single player games. Meanwhile UT2K4 has effects that make me nostalgic for original UT, there is no difference in style, nor have they used any distortion effects or anything cutting edge like that.
Environments
I will admit that UT2K4 has very detailed and busy environments. However, FFXI environments are very lush and have a more immersive quality. Really the two are top notch but in different ways.
Gfx Hardware
Not much to be said here, they both have the most advanced graphical hardware available.
Art
I think this is another field that FFXI beats out UT2K4. When I first played UT2K4 the art behind the models seemed... uninspired. Whereas the look of FFXI art is very immersive and provokes emotional response and actually looks better that FFX-2 art.
Maybe now you can see where I was coming from saying that FFXI looks better than UT2k4, which is almost top-end FPS gfx.
If you are comparing FFXI to UT2k4's demo you should know that the real game looks 30-50% better than then the demo.

WOW!!! I cant believe how highley you guys think of this game. I was exciteded for it and bought it the day of NA release. But sadly the game was slow and boring for a number of reasons.
!.) no form of PvP(although they claim a kingdom vs. Kingdom pvp not pk is being released.. whatever that means)
2.) Forced to group past level 10 ...no soloing here
3.)Story is boring and slow progressing
4.)Leveling slow and repetative
As a FF fan i was sadend by this release. I thought it would get better with time but as a lvl 50 pld i can say im still doing the same boring stuff at 50 as i was doing at lvl 20(spending long periods of time searching for groups with whm's) the game is to slow for even me and sat all the way through the 3rd LotR 3 times If u dont own this title now i would hold out for a better title their are many coming soon. I am personally finding it hard to see why other FF fans would even enjoy this title. Sense FF is a great story based series and this game story is severly lacking.

I didn't intend to form a detailed discussion of UT2004 vs FFXI. It was just the first game to pop into my head when I wrote the post. That being said, the art direction of a game can't be rated on a 1 to 10 scale. It's really just a matter of taste. I liked some parts of FFXI's art and disliked others (mainly the color scheme.)
I thought FFXI had bland, flat-feeling environments. Also, the water was too ugly for words.I don't know exactly what you're trying to say here, but if you mean that both games have comparable graphics engines, you're wrong. FFXI was designed two years ago for an inferior (technologically) platform in PS2. UT2004 is based off of the Unreal engine that debuted in Unreal 2 about a year ago. the Unreal engine is in another world when it comes to polygon-pushing, texture detail, animation, and just about anything else I can think of.
This one, I can't argue. Like I said earlier, art direction is all in the eye of the beholder. It's cool that you liked it. Let me just say this: When discussing a computer game's graphics, you should tend to look towards more tangible things (frame rate, models, textures) and stay away from art direction. I think art direction should probably be considered "Presentation" instead. "Graphics" is a real tangible thing and, whether you like the way FFXI looks more than UT2004, the latter game is undeniably more accomplished on a technical level. <RANT OVER>p.s. I apologize for any broken quote tags. They were giving me a headache.
Thank you for your well-thought-out and compelling argument. Also, do you like Snickers? I find it to be the most wonderful of all candy bars.
