"It's the most fun MMOG I've played," said Chris Cao, the Studio Creative Director at EverQuest and Star Wars Galaxies developer Sony Online Entertainment
"WoW will probably be the next WoW," Cao postulated. "We haven't seen its full market share. There will be new versions coming out. It will likely be popular for multiple years."
SOE send flowers to WoW all the time but this is pure hero worship on Cao's part. Despite the fact that the expansion is delayed to a street date of Jan 16th, WoW will still be on top for many months to years tocome.

Well damn, and here after reading the title I was worried for the sanity of our experts.
But nope, its just an idiot the world would probably be better off without anyways
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

TBC will be as close to a bullet proof piece of software as we have seen in gaming in the last few years, even though it is "more of the same." Millions of people like that "same", and it will also draw back people who have taken vacations from WoW for a while.
I think the main takeaway from this for other developers is to create games that aren't going to be "the next WoW", but to create games for people who for whatever reason do not like WoW (like most of the posters at MMORPG, for example). There is a market there, if someone will fund a development house to make a game for it.

SWG - 1st Gen MBH (Closed)
EVE (Closed)
WoW (61 Orc Hunter - Blackwing Lair)
GuildWars (Boring...)
I actually also think that WoW is a singular phenomenon. The franchise was so ridiculously popular that it was bound to succeed.
As far as sci-fi "WoW' goes you don't have to look far. Starcraft MMORPG anyone? Yes, there's no way Blizzard is stupid enough to miss out on an opportunity like that. It's coming sooner or later.

Bash it all you want, WoW is actually a very fun game. You can strut around all you want talking about challenge, risk vs. reward and all that other alpha-male crap, but WoW is the only MMO thusfar that manages to preserve a sense of fun after the first month. The only major flaw in the game - the dreadful max-level game - appears to be getting a gigantic correction in the impending expansion. If Blizzard pulls this that off, then I don't expect to see another WoW-sized success for many years.
Even to myself I'm a genius
Then again for another year.
Everquest 2 holds my interest for 3-4 months at a time, but other stuff gets in the way.
City of Heroes/Villians held my interest for 4 months and still would except for the life thing again.
WoW held my interest for 10 days of a 14 day free trial.
Everquest 2 -2 month til i got sick of it
City of Heroes -first 2 days did it
WOW -2months then paused then again after 2-3months pause then again after 1month pause etc..
somehow love the playing style of my rouge
Everquest 2 was had good game mechanics
i really liked the crafting system
but graphics was definately not for me
the characters seemed more like puppets than alive
and the loading screens made me hate it

While I agree that WoW DOES have many merits, I don't think it has been the only MMO to entertain beyond one month. You're just not giving credit to earlier titles. WoW has done to MMO's what McD's did to fast food and Starbucks did to coffee, brought the product to the mainstream. Blizzard made a C+ game, made it relatively rock solid, and used its name to bring it to the masses with a great success to the tune of 7.5 million subscribers.
I also agree that WoW will probably remain on top for the foreseable MMO future. Even though I found the game to have too many barriers for an in-depth MMO experience, like Novaseeker said, its success is only good for the genre because the market now has 7.5+ mill players instead of under one mill only a few years ago.

(applies to other mmo's too
Yet another anti-SOE post from JestorRodo.
DAoC is something different, but you better wait for Warhammer.
RvR is the most fun type of PvP I enjoyed so far.

Favorite MMORPG's : DAoC pre ToA-NF, SWG Pre CU-NGE, EVE Online
If mmo's were "Rock" music, then WoW would be like the band "Nickelback. It would be in the top 40 on the Billboard charts and listened by both kids and their parents. EQ 2 on the other hand would be more like the band "Slipknot". It would be listened to by a smaller community of people that thrive on a specialized form of Rock.
Now chances are most of the Nickelback fans probaly have never even heard of Slipknot and even though Slipknot fans have heard of Nickelback's music, they would find it dull and lacking in content.

All evidence to the contrary.
Experts are paid idiot bots who worship the opions of whomever is funding their magazine!
WOW better enjoy the ride on the cash cow while it lasts because this new year is going to see some big jumps in MMORPG quality. Warhammer, Vanguard, Gods and Heroes, and probably a few others.
Then again....perhaps the MMORPG market is still ever expanding with plenty of room for all the new kids to jump on!
