I bought 10000 gil on a site for under 10 bucks....and liked it. It was fast and easy, and I got a thank you letter...I think FFXI is the easiest MMORPG to spend [virtual] money in. You always buy more bait and tackle and better armour and rent. I don't feel guilty at all for my little tweak. It just felt good to have alot of extra cash.

I recently quit FFXI...before doing so, I sold $800,000 gil for a bunch of cash (and had 100k left over). It wasn't too hard to make either. Depending what level you are, you can farm. At 20-30+ you can do giddeus, ghelsba, and pal mines. You're not just farming for gil but drops. If you know the right spots, you can get a NM spawn and their drops are worth more. At 36 I farmed in Oztroja, I ran into an NM and got a 10k sword.
Personally I wouldn't spend irl money for FFXI gil....but I can understand why others would.

Damn, paying cash for virtual money. It seems like it'd take some of the fun and the feeling of accomplishment out of playing the game by doing that.
Why? He earned it IRL, whats the difference? Ya have to pay IRL for your char in the first place...
If its true that when you drop a cat it lands on its feet or if you drop toast it lands butter-side down... what happens if you strap toast to a cats back and drop it?

well anyway, i think its kidna funny, someone said that its stupid to spend money of virtual money just to have fun, when ur paying a monthyl bill to play a virtual game just to have fun lol. Well anyway, i don't really condone outside trading, but u know what, it can make people happy :P i sold my hacked valor for $20 on diablo lol. Well anyway hehe gl all

I don't even know why I'm on the FFXI threads, or why I chose this one to post on, but fact of the matter is TallonX said it all. You're paying a monthly fee to play the game anyways. so whether you like it or not you ARE spending RL money for virtual things.
2nd I also don't really agree with selling in game items for real life money. Although I do sorta believe in selling accounts though. Since you're not really exploiting anything, you're just getting money back for money/time you invested in a game. I don't know how FFXI's rules are set up for account transfers, but I havn't had any trouble with it so far. I've sold a DAOC account an SB account, and a EVE account, all I've had to do was e-mail the company my info, and the info of the person I was transfering it to. I don't want to think about how much money/time I invested in those games, but I did get over $200 back from it all. Though I'd never buy an account myself, I'm glad there's ppl out there willing to spend money on things like that.
As far as spending the money though, to me paying the monthly fee is sorta like an entertainment expense. I just weigh that against what I might spend renting a movie, or going out for a night in place of time I'd have spent playing the game. But to spend money for time that you're not playing doesn't make sense. If you spend even $5 for a piece of cloth in game, you've basicaly said that a digitital piece of cloth is worth that much money for you, and is completely different from saying 30 days of entertainment is worth $12-$15.
In closing. I don't know what I'm trying to say, but there's some food for thought. =D
