I hate to do this to everyone here, but I must bestow upon you all the dreaded "Please help me find a new MMO" topic. I'll try and be as thorough as possible.
In trying to keep this short I'll start out with a little personal MMO experience. I'm coming from years and years of beta tests and trials. I'm a long time UO player, been off and on 6 or 7 times since the second age. Yet, over the years, due to certain changes and losses, I've lost interest. I loved the skill system in UO, it encouraged casual play which was great because it fit my lifestyle. It was a great roleplaying experience. I met tons of new people and had a blast with the PvP aspect. During my UO breaks I would try out new MMO's and continue my FPS obsession.
As far as MMO's go, I've pretty much played em all... M59, AC, AC2, Helbreath, KO, AO, GW, WoW, EVE, RO, L2, DAoC etc etc etc /list goes on for a long ass time...
Only problem is I wasn't able to invest the amount of time I'd wanted to as I can now. Lemme list some of the criteria I'm looking for...
Must have:
- Fantasy setting, I'm really not into the sci-fi or even the anime/cartoonish fantasy settings.
- Must have people actually playing! Now, I'm not saying minimum has to be 5 million people, but it can't have only 200 people playing either. They're called massively-multiplayer for a reason.
- Crafting, I loved being able to run to the blacksmith shop to have a player GM repair my armor or issue me a new suit in UO.
- Fun PvE, I'm not too bothered by grinding, as long as it's not anything like Lineage 2...
- PvP, I do love competition.
- Dev/GM Events, they only add to the fun and immersiveness of the gameworld.
- A good variety of character archetypes.
- Large, open game world.
Optional, but would be really really nice to also have:
- A good amount of quests.
- Large-scale warfare, IE DAoC realm wars, KO lunar wars...
- Decent guild/raid system.
- Housing, bare with me on this one.
- Player-driven economy
- Up to date graphics, I have a beastly system, so throw what you've got at me.
- Interesting story.
- Players influence game world.
- Different races.
- You don't have to spend 24/7 playing the game.
So, what I've come up with (between waiting for Darkfall and Age of Conan) is either Everquest 2 or maybe giving Asheron's Call and Archlord another shot... Anyone got any other recommendations?

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

We're both old UO'ers I see and both of us love crafting and shops.
I am too one of those that can't seem to find a decent game. As for EQ2 I'd say BLEH! It's horrible for crafters/shopkeepers really due to the fact that you're bound to certain places for making your items. At least in UO you had an option to actually chat/interract with people while crafting... that's not an optin in EQ2.
But if you do find something, be sure to send me a PM... I'll be there in a jiffy...
Alright, so, I've been playing the EQ2 trial for a couple days now and it's honestly better than I expected. It's still pretty new which is perfect, and being as though the expansion is out today, I expect a lot of new people!
I'm still a bit skeptical about DAoC. The game boasts an enormous amount of features that appeal to me, but unfortunately, after reading multiple threads on how the game is really lacking in lowbie communities and how much time I'd have to spend soloing to 50, I just don't think it would be worth it. I was really hoping this game would work out for me though... I have the Epic Edition just lying around...
Yeah, I know how you feel Woodsling. Old UO ftw. I don't think anything will ever compare to how great that game truly was...
So, hopefully EQ2 works out okay, because if not, I'll just have to settle with the current UO...
As far as DAOC goes, in my experience on the classic servers, there were always people to group with. On the non-classic servers, people who have lvl 50's (99% of the population), can just do the command "/level 20", and they are instantly level 20.. naturally, this leaves very very few people for lvl 1-19's to group with.
This is not so on the classic servers, as they were implemented by Mythic without the /level command.
(The fact that it took them like 2 years to implement this change, even though this command was one of the things which was slowly making the population dwindle, says something about how non-insightful they can be when it comes to the effects of changes that they make.) -- However, it's still a very fun game to play, if the flaws don't bother you.

Looking forward (cautiously) to: Age of Conan, Dark Solstice, Armada Online.
Will soon try: Guild Wars
Overall: Amazed and bewhildered at the current sad state of the artform of gaming.
I went back to UO for the free week they had recently... and I do adore that place.
But it's gotten soooo ooooold! Everything's out of date and/or damaged, one way or another.
Come on now people? Could someone please make a re-vamp of UO? Pretty please? Pretty please with sugar on top?
All I want is a skill based game, a house to live in and decorate, items to craft and a community to roleplay with.
... *big puppy eyes* ... Pweeeeae?
^^^ You've taken a gander at Darkfall right?
