How did you like the map system in EQ was it good bad and do you want it in the EQII system.

Personally I didn't mine the map system but somepeople say that they wish it never came in. Well let me here from my fellow MMORPG.com people and see what you have to say

I think the map system is important to the overall flow of the game.  Even if the Devs want exploration to be a major aspect, a map system really helps players get acquainted with their surroundings.  It is also very difficult if you don't have a map to get around a huge world.

I liked how the map system worked as far as being able to make your own maps, but I didn't like the fact that you could download them from other people.  That took the work out of it.

For me i prefer an auto map. You only map the surrounding of place you have been before. So that way it does not scrap the fun of exploration and you dont get lost.

When the map system in the original EQ was implemented it was YEARS after the game was originally release. And that game was HELL without maps! I just wish all those years we could have had the in game mapping system instead of having to download them from EQATLAS!

I think the map on the original EverQuest was the perfect map for a mmorpg. I mean it didn't help you and didn't huart you. I mean it didn't show you where mobs or players were but it showed you zones and gient hole and water and stuff like that. I hope they keep that same map system from the origian EverQuest for EverQuest 2

i loved the map system.. will be especially better with new graphics added to th e map dont want an old map on an EQ2 game, would look corny.. But i do hope they change some things to the map, it took a while for me to get the hang of where i was going even with it.

I guess I was in Everquest way before the map system, but I loved the first few months.  No one knew where they were going or what was out there.  Learning short cuts across the forest under Kelethin to Butcherblock was one of the coolest things.  I love the idea of going out and having no idea what you are going to find next.  I think that the game should at least be released without maps since the world has changed and as they say is unchartered.  Maybe in an expansion or two they can have maps ready to be made.  If it comes out and people know exactly where things are, it'll ruin it quite a bit.  Thats all part of the experience.  I knew when I came to a new city it'd take me a few hours or a day or two in order to properly learn my way around.  If they made maps for the cities it'd be helpful, but it'd take away part of the experience.  Being a new citizen is all about finding out what the city has yourself.  Anyway, thats my two coppers.

Or maybe you start with a blank map and as you discover and scout more land its added to your map ? maybe?image

Either that, or I'd like to see a quest system implemented to gain maps of the zone.

This way, do the time, you get the map.

I remember how fun EQ was when it was truely a sense of adventure that took one from felwithe all the way to Odus and beyond without really knowing where you were going.

If I had a map, somehow, I think those early days of "whats just around the corner" anticipation would certainly be lost.

I like the idea of questing to gain maps for the zone, this way, those that want them can do the quest.. those who dont, still get the sense of "getting lost" and the thrill of finding your way home.

Way back when, Sense Heading was one of the most important skills in the game to me. I would get lost all the time and I would always use it to get back to the city gates, etc. The map feature was a nice touch, but all my hard work went down the drain.

I think a map should be implemented, but in a certain way. It should be a map that draws itself as you move trhough the area. This way you are still exploring the area's unknown at first, but later have a reference. EQ1 Map was okay, but since i was an orginal EQ'er I pretty much knew all the zones by heart.

I remember my very first try at EQ. Started a Woodelf Warrior. This was my first MMORPG and I got lost very fast in GFay. It was very annoying back then to get lost but I stuck it out, and a few character/class choices later I learned my way. Either way they go is fine, but I would really prefer them to have a map that your character made as he/she travels. Might be nice too if you could mark certain areas too.

The maps are only of the island of refuge, starting cities and areas around there.  A vast majority of the world is undiscovered and there are no maps for these lands.  As for if the map fills in as your journey or not, that has not been released.

They have already said that there would be no mapping in EQ2.  As the above poster said they will give you maps of the cities so you can find trainers for classes and artisans as well as find merchants, banks, apartments, etc.  Once you leave the cities though there will be no mapping.

    i love maps.
I hope they will use some form of "fog of war" map so that we only can see what we have explored.
That way it would be a quest in itself to discover the world and fill out our maps.
Then SOE should save our mapfiles on their servers so that we could not download maps from the net.
That way it would not ruin the exploration factor.
And when did it take away anything from those who hates maps?
They can simply not use them.
