That is probably the worst analogy I have ever heard.
A better analogy would compare griefers to murders. No one benefits from them, but they add so-called "immersion".
Well Griefing people can have its drawbacks. In Lineage 2 if your name turns red (5 kills I think) when you get killed you can be looted. Its an example, in games like Eve people can call on their Corp for support. The person griefing is he gets killed and his pod destroyed suffers huge financial consequences, also you can set up bounties for people.
Even in games like WoW people can pretty much blacklist you and guilds to gun for you.
So I would not say that griefing is 100% free to do what they want, consequences do exist, they just differ from game to game.
Current Games: EVE, WoW Have Played: EQ1, EQ2, CoH, CoX, MXO, GW, Silk Road, WAR, AoC, Anarchy Online, UO, DDO
You have a point but I think the word is confrontation rather than grief.
I'm mainly ( 80% ? ) a PvE player. I like to craft, chat and help others to get the stuff they want. A game offering only that can gain my sub fee with pleasure.
However, ask me to name the most intense and exciting moment from my 7+ years of MMORPG play and without hesitation I will say it was my first PvP encounter in DAoC - one on one - against a Kobold caster. He lost, and I was honest to God trembling and grinning fit to split my face.
I'm not a PvP fan, but, if implemented well, then there is nothing to match the challenge and potential thrill of competing against another player.

There are no consequences to griefing in Eve or WoW. Those same consequences can be done by any player regardless of griefing or not. Someone could call in thier Corp or Guild for support to kill you if you grief or not. What specific consequences does the griefer get that the PVP doesnt get. What you are talking about is PVP.
In WoW, you cant be blacklisted, and people dont gun for you. Thats absolutely a ridiculous statement, even if it happened how would you know maybe they are gunning for you just because you are an idiot or an easy target because you dont know how to play?
The problem with griefing is that an MMO doesnt police itself. You can see it on FFA servers like DAOC Mordred. What you will find is people actually team up with the overpowered griefers so they can also get easy kills. Making it even easier, until there are sooo many people they are all running around trying to get the 1 easy newb grey kill, just to piss people off. There are no consequences to griefing thats why it never works.

Grief is only valid when the griefer suffers consequences.
If there are no consequences to griefing, the game is flawed.
Since the griefer is only griefing because there are no consequences for their actions that matter.
A murderer goes to prison... for a long time.
A thief would be caught and outcast from town...
These things don't happen in mmos. thus griefing is not valid.
