There are no factions whatsoever, nor are there alignments. The only alliegances you and your companions may have are those you decide to create.
PvP is consentual, that is to say, unless you're in a PvP zone (which includes areas such as taverns) all participants must be willing to fight. The borderlands where the guild battlekeeps are built are free for all PvP. Note: PvP zones may include nearly the entire map on a PvP server
PvP death: temporary stat loss, possible item degredation and the looting of a certain percentage of stored "blood money" (blood money to be explained later)
Skills, stats, xp and items are all on a seperate table from their PvE counterparts, that is to say, participating in PvP will give you much more benifits than simply leveling up to max the normal way.
Blood money is a looting system, everyone starts off with some when they enter the borderlands for the first time, the primary way to get more is by being successful in PvP combat. Blood Money can be used to buy equipment and other items made specifically for PvP.
Battlekeeps are the guild cities, the endgame primarily focuses around the sieging and defense of these. Note: If a guild builds their city in areas other than the borderlands, they still must defend and attack, but in this case the enemy is hiving NPCs, not other guilds.
To initiate a siege, the attackers spend resources to build a war camp (a challenge marker if you will), the defending guild has a certain amount of time to accept the challenge, and choose when their keep will be open to attack, if they wait too long, their city can be attacked anyways. This system is in place to prevent people from attacking when their opponents are all logged out, or from initiating a challenge on a whim to cause trouble.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
Sounds like those borderlands are for guilds only, soloer wont be extremely 'succesful in PvP' in FFA area filled with guild cities, that's for sure. And if guilds control the main PvP area, they will have the most bloodmoney and best PvP gear, right? So does that mean that soloers have to grind barfights to get better PvP gear?
I'm just asking because I will never want to play another PvP grind ever again (World of Grindcraft).

Barfights don't end in death, just a humiliating knockout, so you won't be able to grind BM that way even if you wanted to.
As to the main question, yes guilds will dominate the system. Soloers do have some relief along those lines, they can gain experience fighting as a mercenary hired out to said guilds, its also a good way to make money of the ordinary sort. The idea is that almost no matter how powerful a guild grows, its better to grab a few extra troops to ensure the day goes the way they want, or pincushions to form the front rank.
Winning in truly solo encounters is also quite possible, although more risky, your target is more likely to have freinds nearby

Gear in AoC isnt what it is in WoW(well isnt supposed to be anyway). The game is gonna be much more skill-dependent than gear dependent. Even the best gear is only supposed to give slight advantages. Unlike WoW if someone has tier2.5-3.0 gear they have the same advantage as being 4-5 lvls above you even at the same lvl. Not to mention most good gear will be player crafted anyway. Making deals with crafters IMO adds a whole other fun element to a MMO.

How big do you think these "epic battles" will be? One thing I hate is games saying massive battles when theres like 50vs50.
i honestly don't see how 50 vs 50 will even be do-able with the level of graphics they have in the game. I was paying attention in one of the vids from a convention where they sped up an NPC city to produce troops, and once there were over 15 NPC troops on screen at once, it was noticeable that the frame rate dropped. Not to where it looked bad, but you could tell that it dropped.
And you have to keep in mind the machines that they run the games on at conventions are going to be top of the line gaming machines. I don't think an average computer will be able to handle 20 vs. 20, much less 50 vs. 50.

That's really nothing new, whenever I play a PvP game I use the lowest settings possible, just to get less lag. I'm more worried about how their upgraded AO code will handle massbattles. Server lag is really something to worry about.

I don't want to get to much in depth here (because im sleepy) but I think you have nothing to worry about 'guild' peiople dominating PVP.. If AOC is anything like Funcoms other MMORPG (Anarchy Online) PVP wise and it looks like it will be as far as the setup (Towers = Battle keeps) then thier will be almost as many Soloer type peeps as theere will be Guild people at almost ever PVP battle..
In AO their was a PVP channel that anyone could have access too so they would know if their was a battle going off and anyone(not just guild people) had the option to go there and participate.
Hell im going to cut this short(sleepy as hell) but I'll just tell ya that I had a ONE man guild in that game and was able to keep my towers defended by me myself and I for months agianst tons of guilds and people.. How did I do this? When ever I found myself under attack by more then I could handle I would ask for help in the cities or zones and people (solowers, guildies, pvp people) would usually come running. Ususally though people would show up anyway when they saw in the (PVP tower channel) that I was under attack.
Now I know that Anarchy Online is not Age of Conan but it is developed by the same people and I can almost guarentee that they will imcorporate alot of the PVP aspects that they had in AO into AOC, since it worked pretty well.

Personally (and this is comming from someone that played AO to death back in the day) Funcoms game engine is very suspect in big battles.. Small scale afairs were no problem, but when you got more then 50 people in one little area, it was a Lagmere.
I hope they fixed this....Only time will tell I guess.

The concerns with lag aside:
They showed a developing PVE "hive", one of those that as it grows will send out raiding parties to attack your town, the longer it sits there unchallenged, the more powerful it grows.
The first, and therefore smallest raid party it sent out in the video was about 40-45 men

you'd be very surprised at how large a 50vs50 battle can be when everyone is really close.
