Which MMORPG is for me? (poll inside)

I realize this question probably gets asked a lot but I'm going to ask it anyways.  Which MMORPG should I get?  I'm mostly looking for the MMORPG you prefer and the pros and cons so I can decide for myself.  Right now I'm mostly interested in WoW and Guild Wars.  I would much rather not pay monthly fees unless it is REALLY worth it.  I hear how great WoW is but to give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I'm not going to pay more then $15 for a subscription.  I don't care about how much the game in itself costs.  That is one of the reasons I'm looking into Guild Wars.  I have only seen someone play WoW for 15 minutes so I really don't know how it compares.  Please back up you opinions.  This is my first entry into the MMORPG genre so it should be exciting!  Please answer the poll for you personal preference.  Oh, and I'll be playing it on the PC with enough hardware for whatever you throw at it.  Answer the poll below if you have a preference please.  Thank You!

P.S. No Star Wars or other movie based MMORPGs please (I'm also not really into Final Fantasy).

Thanks for your comments so far.  Like I said, I have never played an MMORPG before so the poll was based on the best selling online games sold by Amazon, as some of you pointed out, some of them are not MMORPGs

Well, I decided on WoW.  I have a few friends who play it and it sounds like it's great for beginners and pros alike.  I'll be testing it out for a while but I will definatly take a look at some of the games you guys suggest.  Thanks everybody!

    I voted for WoW.

    Reasoning:
It's very easy to play.  It's got a large population.  It's very forgiving.  It's one of the better starter MMO's out there.  When you are ready to try out something that requires thought you can check out something else but WoW isn't that bad even for MMO Vets, imo.

I own Guildwars: Prophecies but never really enjoyed it, it's one big instance...  Not my thing.

[edit]also, you included quite a few Single Player games in your poll.  On purpose?

The thing with choosing an MMO is that if you have to ask someone else "which game is for me?" then you'll never really know the answer. You've already missed the whole point of MMOs in the first place; individuality. Just do/be/play whatever you enjoy the most and if anyone laughs at you for it, give them the finger and keep playing. If you aren't enjoying yourself, what's the point?

I beta tested Guild Wars, and I bought the original and first expansion after release. I was never able to stay with the game for more than a week. The game really forces you to group, because the AI is terrible and you can't solo anything. Guild Wars' community is also sub-par, until you get to the later areas (or so I hear) which is even more restrictive, since the forced grouping leaves you stranded with a bunch of idiots.

Personally, I enjoy WoW. You can solo to your heart's content, and there's enough grouping to keep you busy. Sure, WoW's community isn't all that great either, but there are good people there and you can find them without looking too hard. The few complaints that I had about the game appear to have been taken care of with the upcoming expansion.

I would say either Guild Wars or WoW, both are completely different games in style and both have many pros and cons. Guild Wars has a more single-player feeling to it since the entire game when you are out of town is instanced, WoW however is not instanced and people are free to PK and KS you whenever it pleases them to.

World of Warcraft is the best MMORPG for beginners. You can buy GW if you wish, but remember your playing an onrpg, not an MMORPG. if you want to play a real mmo, go for WoW.

WoW was my first MMO. A lot of people will say it's easy, and for the most part it is. However, it's a fun game nonetheless.

Currently I'm looking at Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Here's the link if you want to take a look http://www.vanguardsoh.com/ . There would be a lot of things to talk about so I'll just let you discover for yourself. It won't come out until Q1 of 2007 though.

So yeah, I guess I recommend WoW as well.

Half of the games in that list aren't even mmorpg's..

You could look around for free trials, a lot of mmo's have them.

I'd say Guild Wars. It's the less grindy MMOG I know.

    From Wikipedia:

"[The apostrophe] assists in marking the possessives of all nouns and many pronouns."
"For the plural of abbreviations, an apostrophe is widely regarded as incorrect, so CDs is preferable to CD’s."

Oh man, I know it isn't an MMORPG, but it's on your list. Gothic. I don't know about Gothic 3, I saw some screen shots and they look pretty cool though. Anyways, with Gothic, I got to nearly the very end of the game. The old town closed down, new town was almost done collecting their crystals or whatever and I was helping all three factions. I was supposed to collect a bunch of supplies for this friendly orc to make me this cape so I can talk to other orcs. The game itsself is just incredibally bugged. So, I collected all the supplies and went into the mine that the friendly orc was residing in and for some reason, I couldn't talk to him! The whole game ended there for me. Weeks of playing for that anti-climactic bug.

If the company has got new programmers and fixed all the bugs, I would DEFINENTLY go for Gothic 3.

Off of the topic of only Gothic 3. Every game listed, I have played except for Everquest II And Warhammer.

WoW - is fun, but only really fun like levels 1-25 and level 60. You don't nessicarily(sp?) need to be in a group all the time too, which is good.

Guild Wars - It's ok. The max level you can get up to is level 20 though and that is a BIG pain because the monsters soon become level 30 + and you need to be in a group all the time.

Neverwinter Nights - Well, I bought the gold pack of this with like all three expansions and I just felt rushed to get to the last expansion while actually going through the story line of the other 2 games. I never really got into it very well, only played it for about three weeks.

Elder Scrolls IV - This is really fun, not my favorite though. I like the idea that you can attack anything you want, even townsfolk ( Like in Gothic.) There are a TON of spells and you can also steal from vendors which is pretty cool. (Also like Gothic.)

Fable - Very fun. But, sadly, very short. I finished the whole game in 3 1/2 days. You should buy it just to pass time. Good story line and good.. just, well, overall.

Diablo II - Amazing. If I had to vote, one of the best games ever made. Actually, I'd probably still be playing it now if my computer would let me. I got a new computer and for some reason I can't play online. Five different acts that are all equally fun. You can run the boss of each act almost like an instance in WoW. The level cap is level 90 which is fair. I don't know how the game is now though, havn't played it in quite awhile. (And a little thing if you didnt know. There is a secret cow level that just has a bunch of bolvine with axes. To get there, you go to the starting town in act I, get Wirt's leg and a tomb of town portals and mix them together in Deckard Cains box. Tada! You might want to take a group with you though.) PLAY ONLINE ONLY. OFFLINE GETS VERY BORING!

Other; Starwars: Knights of the Old Republic - Not an MMORPG technically, but it has pretty much all the aspects. I know you said you don't want any movie based games but well, this is one of the best games ever made. You can think of it as just aliens, it doesn't have to be Starwars. There is no on-line play at all but the completely diverse planets and different quests make up for that. No quest is the same. There are tons of skills and armor. You also get party members which is pretty fun.

In All, If I had to choose a game, it would probably be Gothic or maybe, WoW. Gothic is a very deep, fun, interactive game while WoW is basically hack and slash, be the first of all your friends to reach level 60. Though there is some crafting in WoW, loot items are better. Gothic doesn't have any crafting, but I mean, the greatness of the story line makes up for that. Go with WoW if you want an actual MMORPG though.

    Hero Online:
Pros: Never lags (as long as i've been playing), has 10 different servers so thats probably why. Sound, gameplay and graphics are all great.
