EVE Online: Video: New/Old Ships Side-by-Side

At the fanfest, graphics were some of the biggest things they had to show off. This video shows new and old ships side by side.

Thanks to CCP for this video.

It's all nice and shiny, though from what I've heard it's only going to be the ones who have Vista on board that'll be able to look at the new shinies. Or that depends on how willing M$ are to make an XP version of Dx10.

you heard wrong. Those graphics are the dx9 engine, the DX10 engine will just have better performance and will allow them to do things that DX9 can't in the future. That's it.

The images you have seen in that videa are the updated DirectX9 graphics. Its just that DirectX10 will have a few more shading tricks and some optimisation.

Remember X3 Reunion doesant need DirectX10.

As noted by others, these images are from their DX9 graphics upgrade. They're also doing a DX10 version, but have not yet shown it off. They're keeping the original client too.

CCP never fails to impress with their graphics engine.  And if you haven't seen it, there's a render of one of the characters that we'll be able to walk around in stations as.

I played EVE for 14 days. I thought the combat seemed too 2-Dimensional, the GUI controls are sluggish and caused client-server lag, and the enemy ship AI was too primative. There also wasnt a whole lot "to do" outside of PvP, other than make currency to outfit your ships with.

I understand that a lot of EVE players zoom their point of view so far out that they never actually see any of the ships in combat. They become commanders of little blips and numbers on a sensor screen. They do this partly to avoid the GUI lag issues I described. So this new graphics upgrade won't even be very good eye candy as many players aren't often looking at the ship :)

So in that 14 days you were able to do the newbie combat missions and maybe some level 1's. Of course the combat is simple it's like the newbie area of any other game. It's designed to teach you the basics of combat without overwhelming you with things to do. Once you get past level 2 missions they get significantly higher for low SP characters and introduce basic tanking to the equasion and level 4's are the next step up.

When I'm PVE'ing I'm always up close on my ship or looking at my target, PVP may be a different situation though ass you need to get a better overview and ships are generally pretty far apart.

As for GUI lag, it is a problem currently but will largely go away after the graphics update, as currently the engine uses more CPU than GPU, so once the DX9 update is done it will balance tasks better between the two, making for a smoother running game.

that 14days you played really didn't get you anywhere. just by reading your post. play some more and maybe you'll get it.
