Official server posts declining - implies population #'s

PreCUPreCU Member Posts: 382

This was posted on another site. It's another way of looking at population numbers with factual data.

Here are some more stats. The numbers adjacent to the servers represent the average monthly posts after 12/01/05 (till today) divided by the average monthly posts before that (taking into account variable server start dates). The only server that has a higher average after december '05 is Infinity-Europe. All average monthly posts totaled after 12/01/05 divided by the all average monthly posts totaled before then is equal to 0.60. So basically average server posts are down 40% since the NGE. And I don't show the stats here but I also did this for 3/3/05 (about a month prior to the CU). After that point average server posts were down only 15% so overall average server posts are on a downward trend.

Ahazi ................ 0.55
Bloodfin ............ 0.79
Bria ................... 0.90
Chilastra ........... 0.29
Chimaera-Euro .. 0.70
Corbantis .......... 0.82
Eclipse ............... 0.45
FarStar-Euro ..... 0.44
Flurry ................ 0.54
Gorath .............. 0.30
Infinity-Euro ...... 1.88
Intrepid ............ 0.53
Kauri ................. 0.51
Kettemoor ........ 0.92
Lowca ............... 0.26
Naritus .............. 0.71
Radiant ............. 0.41
Scylla ................ 0.59
Shadowfire ....... 0.77
Starsider ........... 0.37
Sunrunner ......... 0.48
Tarquinas .......... 0.49
Tempest ............ 0.52
Valcyn ............... 0.60
Wanderhome .... 0.57

These stats represent the # of posts per month on the Gorath server forums on the official swg site. The post totals are accurate to +/- 50 posts.

There are many variables that might influence the number of posts but generally the trend should correlate with the server population. I included some milestones that may have had a strong influence. I chose Gorath randomly. What do you guys think?

I think its hard to find comparison between those two.  I had many good friends who played the game regularly yet didn't even know how to post on the forums and also knew a few folks who posted nonstop, but rarely logged on.  The forum for some becomes a game within the game.  Still interesting to see hard data of any kind from SWG though.

    Exactly.

These numbers are first, hard evidence, that game is improving. More and more people are getting so happy, that they simply don't post anymore, since they are too busy playing the game.

At this rate, NGE will write history as one of most succesful games in the history, since all posters will finally move into the game.

the simplest answer is usually the correct one. Less posts = less players.

That's a false statement, you assume the forums were solely used to flame.  Back in the day, besides flaming, the forums were also used to:

    A- Recruit for guilds.
    B- Organize Events.
C- Just to shoot the crap.
D- To discuss what we liked about the game.

I know because I was on those forums from June 27'th 03 to Aug 27'th 06.  Most of the forum time was rather social, check out threads like, "The Rifleman's hall."

lol, hilarious, certainly a nominee for the "Helios Memorial Spin of the Year" award ...

My theory would have been that more and more customers threw up their hands and said "Why post, they just do whatever crazy thing comes into their heads no matter what we say."

Seriously.  Anyone who can say that with a straight face should go work as the PR person for Enron.

    Or SOE, what's the difference?

A steady, measurable, consistent decline in board activity, while in and of itself won't prove the exact decline specifically (it's actually down less than I believe the acutal subs are down) it does prove that there IS a significant decline.

The forums imply a 40% loss of subs, I'd tag that much higher, I think they are down 60% or more.

I think it means more people are playing the game instead of getting mad at it. I just joined Eclipsde today and at 4am the Cantina in Eisley had about 10 active people with many more going in and out.

    LOL

i guess now it *is* amazing for there to be 10 people in a cantina on the starting planet, considering that would be a slow night in a player city cantina before the NGE. hell, that would be night where SWG had to compete with something like the Superbowl or a slew of New Year's Eve parties...

4am on a weeknight?  What were you expecting, a packed room?  I'll save you the bother of the whole "back in pre-cu" argument so we can jump straight to the next phase, during pre-cu the numbers were this low at this time of the night as well.  I know this because it's my usual playtime.

Ya, but the only cantina people go to is the mos eisly one. Pre-cu might have had 10 people in the cantina at this time, but there were more than just one cantina. You also could easily find full solo groups on dath or dant at any time on any day(except holidays like christmas). People didnt leave the buff bots in cantinas 24/7 for nothing. This is ahazi of coarse, others servers may have been different. And back then it was my usual play time too.

PR spin is fun. Until you start waking up with a sickening feeling in your gut, making you want to throw up.

That's the time it's time to start writing that Dear John letter to your employer.

One of two things is happening:

    1.  The percentage of players that post is the same, but the population has gone down;

    2.  The percentage of players that post has gone down, but the population has stayed the same.

    Some explanations include:

    a.  The current population is less interested in the community aspect of the game, and thus has less reason to post on the Galaxy forums.  This would certainly be consistent with the conventional wisdom regarding the target audience of the NGE.

    b. People are tired of posts being ignored by the Devs.  But you generally don't post on the Galaxy forums to give that kind of feedback so I don't think that one is as likely.

    c.  People are so unhappy with the game, they don't care about the game enough to post.

    d.  People are so happy with the game, they don't feel the need to post.

I am sure their are plenty of other explainations.  But the point is we don't really know.  Although I agree with the premise that the simplest explantion is usually the correct one.  In this case the simplest explanation (assuming posts overall on the forums have done down, not just on the galaxy forums) is that there are less players, so there are less posts, for whatever reason.
