Possible Ac2 relaunch?!

AC2 was awesome. I'd love to play it at it's current and final build but it would be even better if they took out the PK patch that nerfed damage and heals in PvP so the 'fights would last longer.' I love being able to run up to someone and 2 shot them. I think people thought AC2 sucked, not realizing that it would be better than anything released in the future. People said it was a grind, and that once you capped out all you could do is do the same quests over and over but then wtf is WoW? I honestly thought grinding in AC2 was kind of fun, probably because of the classes and skill sets. It was just fun to own.

I really liked some of the unique professions. Is there another MMO out there that has something similar to a Lugian Tactitian? I miss the Fets quest and having to search for the quest starter. Or running Moars for anyone who wanted it. It felt great making that run for others. I never had so much fun as AC2. I used to collect as many musical instruments I could get my hand on. The Ice Lute was pretty cool.

I'm going mainly on my gut reaction to the temperament and maturity level of the posts in that forum by users who claimed to be in the know, but I'd bet money it's the real thing.

It's not really fair to call such an endeavor illegal, as there's no court precedent about the reverse engineering of server software for a canceled online-only game. An *unauthorized* server may be a EULA violation. Whether violating an EULA is illegal also remains fuzzy territory, moreso where the game is defunct. If anything, the special status of games like AC2 and E&B - and the fact that the individuals who made them are almost certainly forbidden to discuss the situation - ought to swing our assumptions toward the favor of free speech and artistic preservation.

Some of you are carelessly swinging around professional legal opinions about something we simply don't yet know about. It's disrespectful, it's inconsiderate to the entire MMO community (fans and developers alike) since this may someday be a far more widespread problem, and it's dangerous because it encourages liability-wary websites & forum administrators to silence discussion.

well i highly doubt they would relaunch a game that is terrible, and if they did make it much better, it would be to late anyway

AC2 had a lvl cap set to 150.  No one ever made it much past 90ish until close to the end when the devs started dropping xp eggs
I agree nothing out now or out soon comes close to what AC2 had.  Charters you could totally customize....height...fat ...skinny...9 or so hair styles/color...same for facial hair for guys...several skin colors with lighter and darker shades....some even had tats... Solo quest, solo content, loads of high lvl and low lvl content....large group quests, small group quests, 4 races ......3 unique to AC ( not the human, dwarf, elf crap we have all played since the Atari days ), 3 classes with 2 sub classes each with all unique race skills/spells…Not cookie cutter skills/spells…..  We had weather, day and night cycles.  WTF how did turdbine jack it up????...Man I am getting all spun up again
Even the grind was fun I looked forward to each and every gauntlet run wondering if today was going to be the day I beat that dam Chaos Wisp.  After reaching lvl 79 it was no longer an issue but there were other things to do by then...There was always something different to do each day because of the timers on the quests
Ok I am done.  I totally forgot what my point was….
    EDIT:
They did remove the damage and heal nurf when they added the optional pvp flag on all servers...pvp anyplace anytime...no safe zones

I have very fond memories of both AC2 and E&B, both being favorites of mine. I was sad to see them both go and would love to see some sort of revival of either one or even both. I agree with one of the above posters mentioning how much time could be spent in AC2 just admiring the world. It was really a beautiful landscape with many breathtaking sights. In today's games it's all about rushing to the next mob or quest, but in AC2 friends and I would often just take a break in certain areas and chat while observing the surroundings. Maybe some day Turbine will do an SOE-ish multi-pass for all their games and re-open AC2 to be a part of it. Too bad E&B wouldn't be a part of it as well though.. hehe.

That pic is old, it's not photoshoped but it take's a while to turn raw game data into a mmo again (look at SWGEmu) but i guess well see if there is a emu for AC2 i would love this tho =D

    Playing: Everthing
    Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.

Ahh what could have been... I never got to play this game :(

It must be pretty horrible to go through the death of your favorite MOR... it has yet to happen to me.

BTW I enjoyed the video :)

I'm glad I stuck with AC2 for as long as I did while many people quit to go play other "bigger" MMO's. I wasn't around in-game when it went offline, but I got the beta and was an avid AC1 player. I wouldn't be so disenchanted about MMO's if there were some AC2-like ones coming out but there isnt. All just the same friggin 1999 EQ Model we all are fed to believe is fun. AC2, while not like AC1 at all, still broke the mold with interesting races, classes, and a quest system that made you unfold a story.

..if the day comes where Turbine realizes their mistake and re-opens AC2, I'll be there :)

Well said.  I couldn't agree with you more except for that last part.  As much as I hate turdbine it would twist my guts if turdbine rereleased AC2, because I would really want to play, but I wouldn't.  Maybe if I could have my old lvl 79 BH back.  That might push me over the edge.  Since the odds are 0 to none I will hang onto the hopes that turdbine goes under and some other developers bring it back.

I would give it a try if they relaunch it...
Never had the chance to play it.

AC2 was very pretty... but it lacked a lot of the depth that the original had, as far as character attributes, such as open choices for abilities (as opposed to ability trees). It had vast terrain like AC1, but with little NPC interaction or interactive elements.

Another thing that Turbine did poorly was communicate and implement the concept of an ever-changing world. Prior to the beta and even into early beta, the community was basically told that we would be rebuilding Dereth, town by town. That never really happened. Besides the fact that nothing you did really had a significant impact on the world of Dereth, even the few villages that had NPCs were pretty sterile; in AC, you could enter every building and you could roam the terrain and find things few people had ever seen. As a player in AC2, it definitely had more of that "game on rails" feel to it.

There was much more that they could have and should have done with AC2, beginning with getting rid of the ability trees altogether, making every building and structure explorable and implementing building and structure tools. Players of AC1 expected a graphic upgrade to what was already a very good game. When that didn't occur, Turbine lost a lot of their subscription base right then and there.

When you add in the technical issues, broken or poorly balanced ability trees and a lack of dynamic monthly content changes, that really tends to winnow down your player base.

They had a great product; all they had to do was upgrade and expand on that concept. But rather than stick with a solid formula and perfect it, they made the decision to go in a completely different direction and it hurt them.

DDO is ample evidence that they have lost whatever magic they had that made the original AC such an enjoyable game. Despite the flaws, it still had three times the content of any other MMO I've played and a large portion of it was quality content. There was always something to do and see in AC. In AC2, it seemed like it was the same old, same old day in and day out.

I got into MMORPG's via AC2. It was great! It took over my life (not so great). I loved just wandering around and looking at the scenery.

Since AC2 terminated, I have played WOW, DnL, DAoC, Everquest, Ryzom, DDO, and EVE, all of which were horribly booorrriiing. None even come close to AC2.

However, Turbine was a bunch of Nazis. They lost a lot of their player base by "banning" players for weeks at a time. I know I quit when they banned me because I refused to pay money for a game I can't play. I called some kid who stole our healer bot "an obnoxious twerp" and got banned for 2 weeks.  I have not seen any other game ban for language or anything else. It would be nice if we could bring back AC2 without crappy Turbine.

What about using one of the free servers to run it like they do for Lineage 2 or WOW?

This was the reason I stopped playing AC2.

AC1 was and still is the MMO that all other MMO "SHOULD" be trying to copy off of but for some reason I can't understand the game companies (even Turbine for Pete's sake!) don't think we the customers want:

    • Excellent treasure system that doesn't spit out cookie cutter items that everyone else already has. Aside from some quest items you literally never know what the stats are on a given item you find unless you take a minute and look at it.
    • Interesting NPC's that aren't just more of the same old orcs, goblins, dwarves, etc. etc.
    • In-depth ever changing storyline. Even today there is some new storyline related thing happening in AC1 every time I log on it seems.
    • Seamless, zoneless environments. The closest thing to a zone in AC1 is a dungeon. Other than that you can run from the southern tip of the Direlands to the northern tip of the settled continent (if you had the hours and hours of free time it would require) and never see a "zone".
    • An inventory system based on strength rather than just limiting how much you can carry artificially. Granted you can't carry an unlimited amount of items in AC1 but you don't usually have to worry about inv space unless you are overburdened.
    • Solo play! Some people don't like to be forced into grouping just to play the game (level 24+ in EQ anyone? GRRR). There are many gamers out there that like to just roam around by themselves in an online world to explore alone and have fun!
    • And my personal favorite! An open skill system in which you can do pretty much anything you want within reason and spend your exp AT ANY TIME! There are no "classes" in AC1. You aren't stuck in a rut as a character "type" that can only use certain types of armor or weapons. You can literally be a mage that likes to step in and dish it out with a sword wearing a full set of armor! You may not be the best at either in a setup like that but at least it's an option and quite playable!

These are only some of the things I love about AC1 that didn't show up in AC2 in the same capacity. I believe most of us were literally thinking that AC2 would be AC1 with a massive graphics engine overhaul. When we logged in and saw that it wasn't even close to being "Asheron's Call" as we knew it we just went back to the AC1 we all knew and loved.

Don't get me wrong. I thought AC2 was a good game. It just wasn't "Asheron's Call". If they had released it under a different name and left the attempted Asheron's Call theme out of it I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't have felt so let down. Like I said, personally I stopped playing it because it just wasn't the AC I knew and loved.

You're right, they should have named it something else then. AC2 is a great game in and of itself. AC1's graphics stink. I would't play such an ugly game.

  • sschruppsschrupp Member UncommonPosts: 694
Somnulus, I was really bummed about them dropping the ball on the rebuilding the world part too. That was a huge selling point for me. Something they promised for a long time, and something that never came about. If I remember correctly it was even advertised on the software packaging. Ah well, the game was still a blast to play.

AC2 was my best gaming experience ever. The graphics were amazing. I will never get the feeling I got when I entered an “undead” area at night. I played the game for about half a year. Then I decided to play other MMORPG’s for a while and to return to AC2 when there was lots of new content. Unfortunately, when I wanted to make my comeback to AC2, I received the news about the end of the game.

I decided to play WOW because it seemed pointless to return to my first love ;). A decision I now deeply regret. Seriously, I’d give 20$ now if i could wander around one last day in the beautifull scenery of AC2.

I really hope that Turbine will reopen an AC2-server for one month (free trial). Depending on the succes, they could decide to extend the period to a year and charge a monthly fee. It would be a great Christmas present image

I agree with Tchal. That game was not my first game, but more like my 3rd. Nevertheless, I fell in love with it. I played it for around 2 years and I was in tons of alliances; it was awesome. I felt more adventurous in that game than I did in WoW or EQ. Just something about that open-ended world that i could travel for SOOOO long.

I'll never forget about my first journey...to go to the Arwic(sp?) Vault. The loooooong road to it, fighting those rat-things, those wasps, and shreths. God Damn i miss that game.

I would pay just to be in it one more day.

i agree ac2 was fun, but ac1 is far better overall, all they had to do is give it a better graphics and thed be fine image

I never got to play AC2. I was one of the AC1 faithful that was scared off by all the bad things at launch.

With AC2 gone, AC breathing it's dying breaths, DDO a flop and LotRO probaly dead before it starts, Turbine itself is it's own dead horse. They've had a wait-till-it's-broken-to-fix-it  policy for far too long and there's nothing left of their feet to shoot anymore.

I played and loved AC for 2 years, but after playing FFXI and EQ2, I find myself unable to get back into AC. The graphics are only a small part of why that is. Mainly, it's the lack of community and the lack of job skills. Mages ruled and melees were basically useless, because you couldn't be a true tank and damage never really compaired. Also, the game devs listened too much to the community whiners. The whiners usually got what they wanted, no matter what they cried about. Everyone was given everything on a silver platter and there was nothing left to play/fight for other than who can reach max level the fastest.

I want to see a REAL sequel to Asheron's Call. Call it AC3, AC 1.5...i don't care. Maybe something that combines the best of both 1 and 2. I really miss getting owned on Mud Golem hill near Holtburg, hacking up lugs in the lugian dungeon and the crowds at the armorer in Quala'bar. /sigh

AC2 was great, i hate thinking about how it got shut down and i cant understand why, copared to most games out now it blows them out of the water and even for the eye candy lovers it would still have substantial graphics even by todays standards.

I dont understand Turbine, AC2 gained alot of popularity when people found out it was shutting down, if they where to re-launch it, it would no doubt do better than it did originally. Another thing that hit me was the sheer greed of Turbine, there are companies out there that have amazingly low user counts for there games, but because they love there game, they keep it alive, clearly Turbine lacks in passion and that to me is no good in such an artistic industry as MMORPGS.

I must admit im still anoyed about the whole shut down and if they where to bring AC2 back to life i would jump straight in and i know many other would to.

Now i have just read my post again and im glad iv expressed my views on the topic, but at the same time, i (and im sure everyone else) still feels at a loss knowing that these posts will most probably make little/no difference what so ever.

Bring back AC2,forget LOTR Online before you destroy another franchise and stick to your own, atleast they are yours to destroy if you want to.

    Thanks alot

    Garrik

I've been playing Vangaurd:SoH recently as part of the Fileplanet subscribers open beta, and the terrain and building design remind me ALOT of AC. I honetly think if there was an AC2 without calling it AC2, it would be VSoH. But then again, I haven't played AC in a long time, just going on memory.
