alright, everything's goin fine on the trial, great fun, but rookie chat isn't helpful at all =/
so i was wondering what possible use ECMs have? it seems like even the top-of-the-line ECMs have signal strengths FAR lower then any reasonably sized ship, it can't even work for a typical cruiser.
I'm Gallente if that helps, with the skills that boost ECM effeciency, the highest ECM (which isn't even on the market) only comes to signal strength 9... that's enough to protect somee frigs and drones?
can somebody please point out the usefulness of these modules

It used to be that you need to have over the sensor stength of the ship but now you have a % chance of jamming.
ECMs project bursts of energy that disrupt the targetting sensors of the ship (or ships) targetted.
In other words, they make the target not have you targetted anymore and they have to retarget. Quite useful actually.
A Work in Progress.

ahh alright, thanks for clearing that up, i thought it was still the sensor match-deal.

Yeah it was actually considered a *nerf* by some, because some ships (esp some Caldari ones) could mount a shedload of ECMs and each had a 100% chance of jamming for its amount so it was almost infallible jamming when you added them up. The current mechanism provides that each module has a separate %chance to jam, and if it jams, you are jammed, so mounting more units just gives you more bites at the dice.
When you activate an ECM on someone the game compares the Jamming strength of the ECM + Ship mods for your ship, + skill mods from your character and compares the total ECM Jamming strength verses the Signal strength of the ship you are trying to jam. Then you have a % Chance of jamming that ship equal to the % your ECM is vs. the enemy ship.
So if you are jamming with 12 Jamming strength after mods and the enemy ship has 16 resolution strength you have a 75% chance of jamming him.
Note: ECM does NOT stack... mounting more jammers just gives you more chances to jam. They do not add up.
If you attempt to jam with a ECM strength of 4 verses a ship with strength 16 you have a 25% chance to jam them.
Hope this helps.
Note: When successful ECM renders your opponent COMPLETELY unable to target you so they can't do anything to you that requires them to have you locked as a target.
