Okay, my family is looking for anew home computer that can't be too expensive. If ANYONE could find a computer UNDER $800 with the following specs, I would be extremely thankful.
(No Dell, I already tried the site and they over price EVERYTHING)
Processor:
Intel Core 2 Duo with at least 2.4Ghz. My only question on this is dos it mean they are 2.4Ghz each? If so, please tell me how much power would be appropriate for playing a game with such specs as EQ2.
RAM:
At least 1GB DDR.
Graphics Card:
I am really not a techie, so I would just want recommendations here. Dell recommended the 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS, bu I really don't have the technical knowledge to agree or disagree with them...
Hard Drive:
250GB is good
All the other stuff (mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc.) I already have, but if there are any recommendations for something i may want to change, I am more than willing (and inclined) to listen. Pretty much, I want something that can run EQ2-level graphics on mid/high quality.
Thanks!

Umm... Sorry but Dell is probably the cheapest you'll be able to find for manufacturing. You could always try HP or Compaq. I bought a Compaq with a 19 inch monitor for $600 and it came with 512mb RAM. So I did an upgrade on the RAM to 1 gig and I will soon spend money to upgrade my Nvidia Geforce 6150LE.
Overall, my computer isn't that bad. After upgrading the video card, I would've ended up spending about 800 bucks. If you don't want to have to upgrade all the time, mention that to your parents. I made a bad mistake on buying this computer because I have to upgrade a lot of it to get the most out of it (though it still runs a lot of games fine maxed out).
Okay, sorry that this post wasn't that helpful. I tried though. Remember, tell your parents to get one that will last a while, you don't want to have to upgrade immediately. BTW: That dell recommendation for that graphics card seems pretty nice. I would recommend buying a desktop from them for around $1000, that should suit all your needs for quite a while.
You can build one quite cheap.
But, I doubt you're going to find one that cheap.
The graphics card alone is going to run over $200, if you're on a budget you're not going to get a very good graphics card.
The processor alone is going to run you over $300.
The for a decent Hard Drive you're going to need at least $150.
1GB DDR is going to run at least $100.
Building one with out the excess stuff like CD-Rom, fans, case, etc... you're looking at $750.
You need to dumb down your standards a bit if you can only afford $800. You can't even build a PC like that for $800. And PC companies like Dell usually mark up the price from retail parts by 50%. So, if you can't build one you're looking at, at least $1300 w/o a monitor.
A Work in Progress.

does the advertised power on the core 2 duo (2.4Ghz) mean that each processor has that amount or the total is that amount.
Please, explain!
If you are comfortable building your own I would also suggest www.newegg.com. It really isn't too hard to do but some people just seem to think it is much harder than it is. Or maybe I really am just that good.
If you are not comfortable building it you could try portatech.com, partspc.com, or smksuperstore.com. You should be able to get a decent system built from them for under $800.
You could even save a few bucks if you let them build it and then just buy your video card from www.newegg.com. It is just too easy to install a video card.
There are a few reasons I am going for Intel:
1) My dad works there, so we can probably get a good 10% off anything Intel.
2) My parents are not going to buy a new computer for a loooong time after this one. I had my old computer, before it broke in August, since 2001. It had a 1.8Ghz Processor, 32GB hard drive, 512GB RAM and a ATI Radeon 9600. I want this computer to be up-to-date for a long time, and that's why I am going for dual-core technology
No one has answered my previous question...
EDIT: Made up a computer on Dell for $994, specs below
bump
On Time? On Target? Never Quit?
Are PCs in America that cheap? Here in belgium i pay around 1200 euros for an above-decent PC
start with a bare bone kit from like tiger direct. you can get an above average system for about $690-$790.
edit/ you do lose a few things for instance you'd have one AGP slot instead of two. and two PCI slots instead of six to eitht /edit
and ofcourse its cheaper here. the UN comerance regulotory body is limiting american tech companies by quite a bit over there. A few months ago they forced microsoft to take out various defenses that the vista system has against intrusion, and mal-ware. Not to mention other likely things that don't make it to the news.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
DO NOT buy ANYTHING from Tiger Direct. DO NOT.
A couple years ago I built a computer and didn't listen to all the people who were telling me not to buy from Tiger Direct. I ordered parts for a full computer and:
My motherboard was listed as an 8x AGP... it was a 2x and there was nothing I could do to fix it.
My RAM wasn't the speed they had listed, but was the same model.
What did they do to fix it? Nothing. Basically told me to go fuck myself.
DO NOT BUY FROM TIGER DIRECT
Buy from NewEgg. TD is a horrible company who needs to be shut down.
A Work in Progress.

I normally buy from several sources for the same comp.
but if you shop around smartly you can get a cheap computer. some times a bare bone can be more expensive than parts
edit: didn't read snakey post close enough
are you sure it said 8x AGP instead of PCI as no one makes 8x AGP.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I know my computer parts.
8x is AGP max, you're thinking 16x that's PCI.
AGP 8x
