I've been researching several MMOG games and EVE Online seems to be the best match for my gaming taste. But I haven't played MMOG at all, so it's a bit intimidating but I'm so tired of simple console games like GTA where you can pretty much play without using a brain. I tried Second Life briefly to get a feel for MMOG (it was also free), and graphics were decent for Second Life but it lagged like crazy (my pc is custom-built gaming system with cable modem.), it was very frustrating, but the vast environment in which I could roam around was cool. I expect EVE Online to have better graphics (from seeing screenshots), and gameplay really seems to emphasize surviving in the virtual society, which I really want, I don't care much for combat or PVP much. I want to build a corporation and eventually become a ruler of a faction down the line (if EVE Online goes that direction). But I have some questions regarding EVE Online to clear some questions I have.
1. When you come across another ship, can you look up the character's face?
2. Is joining a corporation pretty much the only way to quickly improve your status?
3. Do you think voice chat will be a plus for EVE Online? I mean, does the game require a lot of communication?
4. When walking inside station is available, can you have your own living quarters, and have a spouse (NPC)?
5. If your career path is not a pilot, are you still always inside the ship? Or some space station?
6. Is being able to land on planets and terraform it to make it your own empire = your own faction?
7. What is the biggest battle you were involved in? i.e. how many ships on each side.
I appreciate your input in advance.
Comments
1. No. You're contained in a goo filled pod.
2. Idk what you mean by that. There is no skill grind in EVE.
3. Most corps use voice. I doubt many will use ingame voice next week becuase I think it costs. If it doesn't cost then ppl will prob use that too.
4. Your guess is as good as ours. Won't be around for AT LEAST another year though.
5. You never leave your ship. Everyone is a "Pod Pilot".
6. See answer #4. Except it will come before getting out of your ship. (I think).
7. 20/50, I'm a relatively new pilot. Not a whole lot of combat experience. We were the 20 against 50 frigates... probably woulda lost but 2 of our ships were carriers... a carrier can launch mulitple drones that are as powerful as each frigate. Expensive to lose and not used very often, but they knew they wouldn't lose them.
If you enjoyed Second Life and can get passed the fact that you're always in a ship, then you might like EVE. It's got alot of RP and socialization.
A Work in Progress.

2. There is 2 types of standings in the game: NPC and Player. NPC standing is worked up by killing the "enemies" of that faction and completing missions for them. Player standings are manually set and can simply be adjusted by paying a player/corp/alliance, roleplaying/talking, or by helping those players/corp/alliance. NPC standings be imprvoed quicker by join a corp, and if you join a player corp and player standings they have worked out will be applied to you as well.
3. Well alot of alliance and corps have and use voice servers now. The question will be is the 10 dollars a year per member worth it with the quality and features... that is still not known.
4. As the Walking in station feature is still on the drawling board what will be allowed to happen in that enviroment is still being decided on the devolper side.
5. At the current moment your always with in a ship, if you do jobs taht don't require leaving a station like trading you may not need to leave the station, but your still floating in your ship at dock.
6. planetary interaction is currently not in the game it is still on the drawlingboard to how that will be applied once in the game. That said Player alliances are pretty much "factions" and have thier own politics and and command structures. Those are mainly located in the 0.0 or the "lawless" space where the players in the alliance must defend and secure thier own areas.
7. Largest battle I ever fought in was a 75 v 100 approximately.
1. Yes. Portraits appear in local chat, in any conversations you have with him, and also if you show info on his ship.
2. I am not sure what you mean by status. Joining a corporation doesnt change your charachter although you can use the corporations standings for some beneficial purposes. You could stay solo and achieve the same. Joining a corp is IMPORTANT to make the most out of eve though.
3. Everyone, and I mean everyone, uses Teamspeak already. Its very complicated and coordination with multiple people is a must.
4. Who knows. Probably not on the spouse part. They dont want all the gayness associated with fantasy MMOs (/dance.... No chance). Living quarters possibly but who the fuck cares. Not likely until the end of 2007 or 8
5. Well you can be in space stations, but youll need to pilot ships to move between them.
6. No not yet. Its vaguely planned. Id guess 2008. You can mine moons etc, and capture whole space systems to make your own empire though. My alliance holds 3 entire regions (several 100 systems, thousands of planets).
7. 200 vs 200. Crazy fun.
EvE is a true sandbox game once i was in an agresive minign corp wahtthat means is we find a nice quiet system to live in with good ore if any other corps come by to mine the good stuff we get ower battelships and gank them. Its all about corperate competition if you want it to be.
There arte other paly styles too that are more friendly but i wont go into thm now.
I felt like I was also very much like the op prior to playing EVE. I had also played Second Life, for about 3-4 weeks, and like games that facilitiate a social element into the game play mechanics. As well, I've *NEVER* been interested in PvP, until I learned how to play EVE.
Each pilot can only control a single ship at a time. You are able to view the ship, acess the pilot info then review ALL history on the character/pilot including creation date and corporations and faction affiliations. This helps in identifying potential creeps based upon corps that might have bad reputations.
There's a tremendous aspect of social apptitude that resides upon the players skills and has nothing to do with character skills. Joining a corporation will help you build you're political contacts with other players which could proove fruitfull down the line. Also, safety is in numbers.
I will be subscribing to a year service of the VoIP chat system. Last I heard it was going to be no more then $10 for a minimum of a year subscription which could possibly include a seperate client to use it's features and communitcate with others while not even logged into the EVE client; think, seperate client from the desktop similar to Teamspeak with quality only a telecom provider could produce.
I hope they go the extra mile with character avatar interaction. As I play Amarr I would LOVE to have a purpose for slaves other then to construct towers. (yes, Amarr is a religious slaver race) I admit that I will possibily spend an equal amount of time "playing" in stations as I currently do in a ship. I think this could quite possibly double their subscription numbers in less then 12 months after its implementation. I am VERY excited about the roll play aspects this would bring to teh game. It *IS* what is needed. There's no details on it other then the pre-viz that's been released for discussion and comments.
Currently you are always in a ship, or a pod. When docked you are looking at an extremely large docking hanger with you're currently activated ship in view. There's some background motion and other eye-candy present; who else knows about the stripper hologram; boobies! (yes, boobies are praised by the gods of EVE. It's been determined that those who have boobies are superior to all other life forms and must be worshiped at all expense. Please note, worshiping and harrasment is a fine line and watch out for the "H4WT" shim!)
Teraforming and planet interaction is a long way off. The closest thing we'll see in the next two years would be managing resources from orbital platforms. The talk is there's going to be atmospherical interaction in alternate settings rather then on planets first with actual planet manipulation being done in an undecided form of a RTS gaming environment. CCP is not static and are constantly devising new ways to expand upon game play dynamics.
*it's been stated, somewhere, that we will see things like "flying through the inside of humungous asteriods" ala Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo parks the Melenium Falcon in the asteriod that was inhabitied by that space worm? There's been a few interviews that name "Empire Strikes Back", "Blade Runner" and "Aliens" as key influencial products upon EVE's design.
Hmm, 250-300 ships our side with about an equal amount on the opposing side. It crashed the server node yet the ensuing battle raged on for 2-4 hours; I was unable to relog 'cs my character was locked into a queue and was one of the few who had to get CSR assistence - I took a break, got some sushi and came back home with beer. I've been in fleet manevuers which included a Titan using it's jump portal and the doomsday device.
*server stability is known to be problamatic in remote systems where there's an unexpecting battle raging. CCP provides support and has balanced the nodes for better performance when it's an obvious issue.
Thanks for the replies, I'm trying the 14 day trial right now and so far I love it! It's very deep, the space is awesome, and I love warping already, it feels like you really are traveling a vast amount of distance. It's been only a couple of days and I probably haven't come close to getting the most out of this MMOG but I still enjoy being a noob and exploring this new world. And this game is very flexible and will cater to any gaming style absolutley without a doubt. Right now, I'm very new so I'm sticking to NPC corp missions and mining in 1.0 sec, but as soon as I get some experience under my belt, I want to venture into sub 0.5 sec and encounter all kinds of ships and engage in PvP as well as full scale battles, this game truly provides unlimited adventures and possibilities imaginable. I already did a 4 jump trip to pick up a ship module not expecting such a thrill ride, what a rush! I was so scared when I found out that the destination had a 0.6 sec rating, not to mention my weak capacitor dying on me in the middle of warping, I thought I was left out there to drift forever until the ship's capacitor finally recharged again to restart warp drive. The stations look amazing, I already tried different races, and they all have a unique style which is great. It does take some getting use to but the tutorial is very good and once you get the hang of it, it's very intuitive and soon becomes second nature. The best part is how complex and real it is, it's like a real universe full of real societies. I've had some of the funniest chats through those channels, the beginner channel is always busy with people asking questions, it's so alive, so I never feel alone in space, whenever I feel alone I open a channel window and there are people chatting always. I can't wait to build my SP so I can join a good corp. and do all kinds of missions and battles with my fellow corp. buddies. I can't wait for Revelations to come on line!
Oh and here's a screenshot of my little space trip to a NPC station to pick up a brand new missle launcher, I just love these cinemetic views! (Notice that it's not a noob frigate, but the better Condor frigate hehe.)
I also have a few more questions, thanks again! See you guys out there in space!
1. Is there a way to switch characters without logging off the game?
2. If some pirate ship opens fire in say 0.4 sec, can I retaliate without any punishment from NPC police?
3. Is it wise to join a human Corp. that belongs to a coalition? Or is it too political and I end up doing dirty work?
4. Was there a human Corp. or a human faction that tried to take over Eve universe at any time?
5. If my character A is from Caldari and char. B is from Gallente but I make these two to form a trading partnership, would the governing bodies of both races put them in any trouble since those two races don't like one another? Or it doesn't matter on a personal level as long as the characters don't harm someone else within those two races? I'm still trying to get the intricacies of the social politics of this very deep game...
5a. If a human corp that hasn't done nothing wrong to a certain race wants to commercial trading within their area, are they prohibited to even enter the area anyway if the corp belongs to an enemy race, or has good relationship with another corp. that is not on good terms with the area governed by the other race?
1. I'm not sure you can switch characters without logging off, i doubt it, you may try to load 2 clients up and see if you can play 2 characters on the same account. You may also have 2 accounts and a comp should easily be able to handle 2 EVE's in windows mode. I'll be making 2 accounts, one for PvP and one for market. I already upgraded one account.
2. Yes you can retaliate i think NPC police don't do much .4 and below or are not even there who knows, i've been in .4 space once
3. I'm not so sure, some corps require a minimum of skill points and after today, you'll have at least 800k skill points, i'm thinking of starting a corp for newbie players where you'll actually be able to be someone and not be a pawn or an entry level person in the corp and you can actually lead/start a contingent. But that is all i'm thinking, i hvae n oidea of corps. Just wanted to throw that out there.
4. There are thousands of solar systems, i doubt a corp could really do it but i woudln't be surprised if they tried, try official EVE forums. I don't think it matters if one race is caldari and the other race is minmitar really, you may get leadership skills that affect this but i don't know too much.
5. I don't think corps are just caldari only or minimtar only or gallente onlyu, i think it's a mix of races, i could be wrong though, but take a look at corp skills.
See you in a day or two when we can finally start for real in the game.
Cryomatrix
You can see my sci-fi/WW2 book recommendations.
Hi you may want to check the forums on Kali/ Revelations dev on eve home page, as my corp were discussing the fact that after the patch EVE will not accept two clients from the same IP, whether that is ony a restriction to trial accounts i dont know but I would be chekcing if I were you mate.
Cheers
Kepa
There is no police in 0.4 sec or lower. A good rule of thumb, no matter the situation: If the target flashes red on the overview, you can shoot it freely. If not you have to deal with the consequences, usally attack by concord, or attack by sentry guns - and of course a hit to your security status. So if you ever get into the situation to attack somebody in low sec, stay clear of stations and the gates (sentry guns) for at least 15 Minutes after the attack - to get rid of that red flash you produce on others overviews, and to prevent the sentry guns at those places from shooting you. There are no restrictions for PVP in 0.0.
Yes and no. An alliance usally has a(n) (un)healthy amount of politics attached to it, but there are some smaller one free of this weight. In the end you need to listen around which alliance is to your liking. Start an independent corp, read the political part of the EVE forum, and get into the current events, then you will see if that arena is fun for you or not, and if there are alliances you would like to join.
Not entire EVE, but large parts of it. m0o a famous corp once conrolled large parts of 0.0 space (0.0 space is the players playground) though they were more like a roaming warband than an entity that wanted a place to live. Atm, there is no alliance in the position to control all of 0.0 space.
That is a side the game is sadly missing. More or less you are required to make up the backstory of that. In older times there was a RP caldari terrorist group that attacked gallente characters and those caldari that conspired with them (*waves at Lame Ducks*), but sadly such cool groups are very rare in EVE these days. Game mechanics wise you have absolutely no restrictions, as you have e.g. no game mechanic restriction to fly an Apocalypse as a Minmatar character or open an office as an Amarr character for an Amarr based corp in Gallente space. If factional warfare is introduced and the conflicts between the NPC empires rise, this might change, though likely not to the level we two apparantly would like to see.
No game machanical restrictions here either. The only restrictions you have come from standings, which are usally worsened by doing missions for opposite side, and by shooting that factions navy ships or the ships of its member corps (at a gate, or by shooting them at missions). If you ever get a faction standing of below -5 the navy forces will attack you on sight when entering that faction's territory. So you have to "work" actively to get unwelcome in a certain nation.
