Please don't go and do a search on this first, I want to know off the top of your head:
Do you know of Led Zepplin?
The reason I ask is cause I was talking with some teenagers the other day and Led Zepplin came up (don't know how) and these kids stared at me blankly. I have to say I was truely shocked.
I grew up in the 80's, but we still knew of and listened to bands from the 70's and 60's (50's not so much). Is that not so today? Do guys only listen to the current crop or are your music tastes more varied.
Thanks for responses.

ehm, I grew up in the 90's and I think I first heard of Led Zeppelin when I was about the age of 6

However, I'm still curious if what the 'kids' are listening too. In my day (shit am I getting old) we listened to The Doors as much as we listened to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Sly and the Family Stone to Run-DMC, etc. etc. I'm curious if the 'kids' are listening to, oh say Linkin Park (or are they already too old) as well as Black Sabbath.
As a 19-year old, I can safely say I know who Led Zeppelin is. But if you ask me to name some of their songs or albums, I'm going to give those blank stares you mentioned in your first post. As for what people my age are listening to, from someone who doesn't follow mainstream music I'd say it ranges anywhere from pop-rock/emo, to nu-metal, to rap. Linkin Park is still around, but I don't think they're as big as they were when the Hybrid Theory album exploded onto the scene.
I personally try to stay away from anything I hear on the radio ten times an hour, and discover music myself that I really enjoy. So while I don't listen to the Sabbath's and Zeppelin's of the world, I've found my fair share bands like Dream Theater, In Flames, Dog Fashion Disco, Katatonia, and others that have been around over the past decade or more.
I know it is a rock band. I can't tell you the names of the members, I can't pick them out of a lineup, and I don't know the names of any of their songs. I am sure I have heard more than 1 of their songs, just no clue that it was theirs.
LZ is a band and not a person right? I am pretty sure about that.
Now the interesting thing is, though I am 21, I could still name most the bands and songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and can usually tell the Rat Pack apart when I hear one of their songs. I was born in the 80s but I know hardly any of the bands that started and finished in the 80s. I love 80s music though. Go Figure.
art rock ftw, Ides?
I like some of that stuff too.
I had to look up the definition before I agreed. Heh. So yes, ftw. =P
I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I just know what I like to hear, and I often find that I take to the stuff that blends rock/metal with genres I wouldn't normally consider like jazz or funk. That's not to say I don't enjoy my share of rip-your-face-off hardcore and thrash metal, or radio-style rock as well.
I'll assume you know of Slayer?
And yes Laserwolf, Led Zep are a band.
Bands don't seem to make names that seem like they could be a solo artist anymore, I suppose.
Blasts from the past:
Jethro Tull
Judas Priest
Lynard Skynnard
Check them out, Ides. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Having sites like myspace and youtube, as well as available downloads
and cheaper media means that it's no longer a case of HAVING to buy
whatever HMV is stocking and Top of the Pops is showing, we can now
just type in on google "Post-Hardcore Melodramatic Funk" (don't try
that one lol, exaggeration) and find something to listen to. I don't
care what your opinion is on 'pirate' music, it's helping everyone in
the music industry except the record producers, and I think that's
great (maybe not the latter bit, but it's giving people a chance at
achieving their dreams, as well as increasing choice available to us,
the consumer). After we've found something 'new', we can spam it to all
of our friends on MSN, and they can try it immediately, rather than
having to borrow a CD. All that makes it really hard to say what
exactly we listen to, so I've just tried my best:
In terms of what 'we' listen to... Talking only of the people who DON'T fit the above category of retards with no musical knowledge... It REALLY does vary a lot now. A lot of people are turning away from the new stuff, having decided most of it is total sh*t (which I agree with, in terms of mainstream music) and therefore turning to either other genres - Jazz, Funk etc. - or turning back to classic rock/metal. If you move from school to school, each one will have a set of bands that EVERYONE MUST listen to... My school has Tenacious D and System of a Down at the moment. Both of those were bands that I introduced to my peer group, and they introduced to the other groups, so I feel proud :P At the same time, ALMOST everyone will like most classic stuff (LZ, Queen, ACDC, Aerosmith etc etc), but we all have our own little hates - mine is Queen, it's all just such absolute... We won't go there That'll start a 10 minute rant lol. Other than that, anything is game really. I personally love more adult genres, jazz and fusion, as well as some 'alternative' stuff... My friends have knowledge spanning all genres, Punk, Metal, Rock, Rap, Techno, JPop etc etc etc.
So you like funk and jazz?
Check out Weather Report, if you don't already know them.
For me, I really get into the big horn rock bands, i.e. Blood, Sweat and Tears and early Chicago.
And those two bands are very much before my time.
There are a few exceptions that were ahead of their times, like ELO.

I love ELO. Everyone I've ever known hates them.
Also, I have to disagree with your point on 80's music being one dimensional. For example, Hip-Hop itself is a compliation of disco, funk, rock (ll cool J, Run-DMC), etc. And rember Red Hot Chili Peppers? They kind of started that whole white boy rap/rock thing.
You see, some of the genres today were just being born in the early 80's out of blends of the dominate genres at the time. Much like the history of popular music through out the decades.
But anyway what Im talking about today is you have really diverse styles coming together like classical and hiphop, electronica/techno with rap and rock, and some really experimental stuff out there like venterian snares. It just seems like in todays music (mostly non mainstream stuff) is a bit more dynamic, but hey thats just me. Also like I said there are some exceptions

of people I know. Personally I hate modern rock, its just terrible and
it all sounds the same. Im not even going to get into emo/punk rock
(aside from classics like The Clash) as I wouldnt even consider it
music.
Probably a good 95% of my playlist is classic 60's-80's rock, with some
50's and a few 90's/modern bands that I dont mind like Rage Against and
Audioslave. Nothing of today's music can compare to the likes of Queen,
Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Frampton, Def Leppard... but, maybe its
something you have to grow in to, I didnt always like classic rock but
I was young and stupid
Most of the younguns are into pop or rap music around here , although I'm only 21, so its still my generation.
As for myself, I enjoy a mix of the best rock out there, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and others among the classics, Black Sabbath and Disturbed among the newer ones.
