Beta Testing - What you can do.

MaximaneMaximane Member CommonPosts: 625

Many people have been given the opportunity to beta test several MMORPGs throughout their time. It gives a person a great opportunity to see the game while it is still under development - to see it before everyone else.

However as beta testers it is your responsibility to step beyond simple play and assist the game developers in finding errors, bugs, glitches, and exploits. This does not necessarily mean you should go out of your way and spend your time running into every crevice of the game with the sole purpose of finding something. If you can take the time during normal play to record your findings and report them to the developers, you will be doing your part.

Now how exactly do you make a bug report?

The technobabble for what you are doing is white-box testing, or testing the functions of the game outside of manipulating the code (that is black-box testing). During the normal course of gameplay you stumble across a bug, error, glitch, or exploit you should try to do the following:

Creating a Case Report

From the moment you discover a bug, error, glitch, or exploit you should...
* Briefly give the subject of the report (eg. Glitch: Stuck in Wall).
*Record the Date, Time, and Area of the incident.
*Describe in as much detail as possible:
-What you were doing before the incident.
-What did you do when it happened.

The key to a useful case report is that the incident be reproducible. How else can they fix something if they don't know how to do it themselves? By giving as much information as possible you enable the bughunters to find out where exactly the error was occuring and fix it.

Submit your case reports via e-mail to the appropriate e-mail address used for bug report submissions. You can find the address listed somewhere on the website or in their discussion board.

So please, do your small part and help out while you enjoy the game. :)

Also note that many developer websites also have a special Bug Reports forum where you can post your findings. Feel free to post on there what you find and let your fellow beta testers see for themselves!

Note - if you are beta testing a Turbine game, ignore these instructions.  When you submit a bug they will just laugh and throw poop at you.
