I can't believe how good this show is. With it's first season, I knew that it was the best cop drama I've ever seen. Now, with its fifth season, I have to say that it has transended that.
Now it is in, IMHO, the best TV show ever. All catagories. I love The Sopranos, but I have to say that The Wire has surpassed it in quality, covering all areas.
If you aren't in the US or don't have HBO, try and rent the first and second seasons. The third season I didn't like as much but it was still very good. And the fourth season is just incredible.
WARNING: If what you expect from TV dramas is quick storylines that are resloved in every episode, then this is not the show for you.

I had no interest in this show though I watched and love almost every other HBO Drama such as Rome, Sopranos, and Deadwood. I had a 3 day weekend one week and saw that my Cable On Demand had the entire first season so I gave it a shot. I was hooked from episode 1 and watched the entire first season in 2 days. I was going to get Season 2 on Netflix but just before I did HBO On Demand had the entire season 2 then Season 3. When Season 4 started I was ready to watch it and have actually been 1 episode ahead all season thanks to On Demand again.
Very very good show and great characters.
Btw, I recently did the same thing for the first 7 episodes of Showtime's Dexter after completely ignoring it when it started and found it just as good.
What did you think of season 3?
Glad to know that more people are getting into this show, as well.
I liked season 3 because of the introduction of politics. It is my least favorite but that doesn't mean it wasn't great. I just hate how all the characters move around each season. I miss them being all together like in Season 1 and Season 2. Also there is not enough McNulty in season 4, but all this also keeps the show fresh which is a good and unique thing for a TV-Show.
I think you are going to love season 5.
Sadly, I think it is going to be the last season. I read or saw on HBO that the creators wanted to cover a number of themes and now that they've done that, they are done.
='(
I am not certain that it is the last season. But I'm pretty sure I read or saw something that made me think that it was.
I'm looking over the web right now to find out what the producers intentions are for the future.
Oops, I screwed up.
There are a total of 4 seasons, not 5.
The first I loved, second liked a lot (wasn't crazy about it though) and the third I thought was the best.
Until this season we are on now, number 4.
Ok, I'm glad we got that all cleared up.
Since this thread isnt about BSG like I was expecting Ill be wandering off
BSG?
Battlestar Galactica. Which, in my opinion, is the best show on TV, Since Stargate's 8th or whatever season Jack left at. But no, I can't debate with you, because I've never seen The Wire. I might check it out.

I cant really comment on The Wire for much the same reason. But Battlestar Galactic is certainly one of the best shows in recent years. Then again, the two other recent shows that come to mind for me are Firefly and Dead Like Me, neither of which stayed around long lol.
Completely different generes, my friend.
Maybe I should of titled the post "The best non-scifi show on TV!"
I got in to (i'll join you in the cool abrv) BSG for the first few episodes. I liked the art direction (very unique for a scifi show).
I was a much bigger SG1 fan, however. I was lucky because I worked for a post house where we did a lot of promo for that show. Therefore, we had the entire catalog for the SG1 and on slow days I would just pop in the tape and watch entire seasons down.
God, I would kill to have that job. SG-1 was great until Jack left, and while the new guys are fine, it isn't the same show. Atlantis is a good substitute, but it just isn't the same old glory days.
If you haven't seen the rest of BSG, however, you need to go out and buy the DVD's now. I watched a whole season in three days (okay, it was a half season, so 10 episodes), even though I had lots of work to do.
Someone mentioned Firefly somewhere. Now, no one can argue that that is the best show that ever aired. I would pay lots for just one more episode of that.
