Actually I wasn't impressed at all I would of been 5 year's ago (yes I'm a graphics whore I didn't build my comp to play pacman) didn't like the sound either.
But i'm still hoping that the gameplay and the pvp will be great as i loved DAOC and it's still in early development.
I hope the gonna improve it, but very basic things already turn me off - like the way the characters move. It looks stiff and the combat animations are just not very good (not fluent and way too "comic-style"). Come on Mythic, you can do better (I hope).
Yes the combat looks stiff, and reminds me of DAoC. Yes they are similar and use the same engine. I also don't like the way the characters move but lets hope they improve it so it meets expectations.
This is footage of alpha (at least a year from release) and even though they're using the same engine as DAoC, they began development on DAoC in 1999-2000. They're of course going to make improvements on the engine for WAR. Also, if I'm not mistaken, they're using an updated version of the DAoC engine.
I thought it looked better than WoW, which is really the only MMORPG out there that has this style of graphics.
Talk about jumping to conclusions. I actually thought it looked VERY polished for a game in alpha. The graphics are far more better then WOW and keep in mind it's alpha.
Keep these things in mind:
It's a year away from release
We have know clue what level these toons are. For all we know they could be very young toons
Looks like game music was off
They have colision detection, i rather have STIFF movement then some kid who can press the jump button constnatly and jump through me. Actually on that note I don't see how movement is stiff. They toons hardly moved.
i don't get it. why all the pretty colours and the lights during the fight? i thought thats warhammer. iron, blood and war. I mean take a look at dawn of war. just blood, dust... war. but its kindergarten again...
There is some very nice in game video footage of WAR on youtube. Movement and graphics in general look to be much more polished in those videos than the one that was just released. My guess is that graphics are toned down a lot for the RvR testing since the game is far from optomized. There also looked to be a little laggy on the movement side of things.
Also, if anybody thinks this game is going to have Wow-like combat they are going to be very disappointed. With Collision detection people aren't going to jumping around like morons all the time when they fight. I do expect movement of some sort to get into better positions but no running around like crazy. In some points, the combat of wow was really fun because of all of that, however I think this will be fun in a different way because it introduces more team-based tactics into the mix.
I expect the final game to be much more polished graphically, and the sounds (and most likely spell effects), to be completely redone. They are probably using generic placeholders right now - who knows... maybe from Imperator.
Those are the basics of combat you're watching, with no polish to anything what so ever. If you don't think much changes from alpha to release, you really need to get a clue. The whole point of alpha/beta is to test and alter things. Plenty of things need work with that video (sound, visual effects, animations, etc), but that would be in a released state. It's in an alpha state, where they have the original visuals and basic mechanics working, with no polishing done. For the state it's in, it looks good.
It'll be nice to see how things have progressed a year from now.
If everyone judged a game based off an in-game movie whilst the game is still in Alpha, than every game must suck then, eh?
Am I the only one who has ever seen a game develop from initial Alpha to finished product?
I agree with Bhazrak, everyone seriously needs to get a clue. Based just off this movie alone, that looks like a damn fine alpha, will be great to see what the finished product is going to be like.
Yes I comprehend that the game is a year from release but that video sucked. People just stood there and swung on eachother......and that is supposed be better than WoW? Hey Im a daoc fan too but cmon...be realisitc.
And for anyone that keeps mentioning WoW's movement and jumping around....you guys do realize that there were good reasons for jumping right?
That was painful to watch, the sound is incredibly annoying.
Glad I am not looking forward to this.

Honestly everyone needs to relax. Trying to pass judgement at this stage is pointless. No matter what there's gonna be doomsayers and the like...no point in letting them get you riled. I'll start making my opinions of the game when I get to use the prize I won from the newsletter contest hehe.
idd no need to panic folks. As i could see that was a very simple test of the alpha stage of RvR combat. Looked like one max two classes where used, not more than two skills were executed thats probably why it looked stiff and boring.
Sure the sound was horible but i wouldnt count on that to be the final version
I agree that this looks real promising for an alpha stage of the game.

Well.. i like the graphics but i don't know about the sound, what's up with the "whooshing" sound?
Atleast could do with sounds of "hitting" something, like maybe smashing and splishing and splashing, or the swords "KLING KLANG!"

I loved the video and looking fwd to the game.
games do not change much from beta tbh.
The combat will look like this and play like this

Don't click here...no2
shure its an alpha but... i'm very disappointed
Hopefully they'll listen to the crisicism and work on it. My only real complaint was the sci-fi-ish sound effects.

That RvR footage reminded me ALOT more of DAOC than WOW... by far...
*sigh*

Agreed! They aren't even finished the game and yet it's 'not polished enough.'
And to the "Games do not change while in development!" STFU, go get eaten.
