There are so many potentially great games coming out next year that it's diluting the hype.
Actually that's no bad thing. I've been waiting for niche games for years - once the market is big enough that games don't have to cater to all playstyles, maybe they can start catering more enjoyably to particular playstyles. More games, more ways to play, and hopefully happier players.
Different strokes for different folks....lol. All I want in my 2007 wishlist is for all the cool games with advanced economies, a player driven storyline and more realist graphics to burn WoW from the MMORPG scene. Like all great empires it is now time for BLizzards to come to an end. Great company, don't get me wrong, but the 12 year olds can stay were they must grinding for Tier 3/4 ....sigh . I'll worry about building an armada--->PoTBS, maybe a Town--->Age of Conan, Ranking to Admiral for a Science and Research Ship---->Star Trek Online.
I agree that PotBS seems pretty underhyped. Once it releases the hype is cleared though, and we get a fresh start based on peoples actual impressions of the game! Hopefully that is where it will pick up. I'm pretty confident that if the game is good, the rating will pick up at release. I think MMORPG.com's user ratings are actually not bad at all, much more accurate than I would have guessed before rating the games myself.
I know that if I were to choose two mmorpgs to name as the best out at the moment, they would be EVE and Guild Wars. I reckon DAoC, Ryzom and EQ2 deserve to be right up with those, just as they are on the top ranked mmorpgs list right now. So I have high hopes for the PotBS ratings once the game releases.
I think I would put Second Life at a higher ranking than its been placed on MMORPG.com though. Thats probably because it is something of a niche game (plus the graphics are prettttyy old). I dont think PotBS will be that big of a niche game though... It seems to have elements that most mainstream mmorpg gamers will enjoy... Maybe the mainstream mmorpg gamers just havent realized it yet They will though!

This is one of the only MMOs thats really poised to knock Eve-Online off it's throne in 2007
I have to agree, while I'm currently in EVE I can't wait to trade my pew pew, for a ka-boom boom...
PotBS has dropped a lil in hype when it was said to not release til next year, but fear not it'll take it's rightfull place high up soon enough.
SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011

Not everybody loves the game like we do...
Not at all. But hyping is just a form of polling, and therefore has inherent limitations in terms of what it actually expresses. Add to that, that only members with a certain legitimacy here (as in, number of posts and whatnot) can hype, and you're looking at a pretty closed system.
As others have said, not everyone is waiting for POBS, more fools they - but with the plethora of good games in development it's not surprising. When there are 10 games to hype instead of 1, people will pick and choose more.
Just my take on it. No conspiracy, just lots of choice.
I think it could be much higher than 6.9 too. I think a game with pirates is going to be highly entertaining, especially with the boats that shoot the cannons!

yes, why is the hype off the map? This game is going to be golden.
Because closed beta is part of the development process. Bringing in testers in small (and then increasing) numbers is how you break the systems you just spent 2+ years working on with the sweat of your developer brow. :-D

But LOTR online is still in closed beta and is shown in the in beta part, so I was wanting to know why it is different for that game compared to this one.

Oh, wow. Its been a long time since I actually looked at the site. I remember the last time I looked they had just added avatars to the game. Then they were going to release it W/O avatar combat and add it in a patch. It's very interesting and nice that they decided to work longer to put this in.
It's great how long it's been in beta because by the time it comes out, most of the HUGE bugs should already be filtered out. It's even better how the devs actually listen to the people as shown by all the player created ships and flags. Awesome stuff!

/agree. The communication between the Devs and the playerbase has been absolutely wonderful so far. The folks at FLS have even come on the mmorpg.com forums and responded to questions, something that I've never seen any other mmorpg do.
I think the reason why this game is not that high on the hype meator is cuz right now it is kinda flying under the radar, only hardcore mmo fans know about it (atleast that is what I have seen) I think when it comes out is will (pardon the pun) make a big splash! and people are going to be WOAH! where did this come from????

maybe some ppl don't like pirates (can't believe that) or maybe some are more hyped by an other game (WAR > PotBS)

Argh!
It could be because the game is listed as a historical and a lot of the 12 year olds hate history
Actually, I think you have a point. They should have thought up a really good alternative word for 'historical'.
