17K active paying subscribers at the last report, nonpaying is a little harder to track, but somewhere around 100-150K is the most reliable estimate I've seen. Note: the above estimates include the two US servers ONLY, and do not represent the German or test servers
Dimension one: Atlantean is more populated than its counterpart, Rimor
Niether server I would call truly packed, except on peak hours in the cities.

Neither are incredibly packed, but you would be suprised how many people you can see in popular training areas these days. Rest assured, you won't feel alone. (I'm on RK2).
In Juni 06 AO had around 20k subscribers. I dunno if that is FREE accounts also. I think not.
But can you trust that number? I dunno. Same website say that WoW have 7 million players. Well if you look at Server list of WoW it's not that active on many servers.
And on my Server it's very very empty... so I dunno... with 7 million it would be very active on most servers... but it's not.
Maybe AO have less then 20k or more. ^^, I think AO have more. =D
Having just returned to RK1 after 4.5 years away, I have to say I'm stunned at how many people play the game, and I don't mean bots or unattended zombie characters. I mean actual flesh-and-blood humans running around doing things and chatting.
In the last four days, I have tried to re-familiarize myself with the lay of the land, and almost everywhere I go (except to the boonies on missions) there is always someone around. It's a nice feeling, really makes the world seem alive.
I paid for 2 accounts before I left. came back to reactivate my main and he's banned...wtf? I was always in good standing with people. helped newbs and froobs alike. they wont unban boozek (210 mp rk2) and it's due to a billing issue....I used to do pay by cash. I got a credit card so it was time to reactivate. the only billing issue is I didnt renew when the time ran out
imo untiill they figure out their prioriteis between paying players and froobs as well as how to prioritize their customer service just dont bother on a censuse. there would be more paying players if you could dig through funcom's red tape

My account sat without renewal or reactivation for over five years, and here I am playing it with very little effort to get it reactivated. There's a good chance it's some sort of miscommunication or misunderstanding. Usually a phone call to a real person can clear that all up.

Send them a mail or give them a call... or maybe you did something before you left last time? ^^

Yes, it's nice to enter a game without Bots and Gold spam 24/7. ^^
Population is great!
If you are an old AO player, then I can say that people have just found other places to hang around at. It's not empty. It's not ghost towns. Just moved around a little. Still people at the Grid in Omni Trade hehe. ^^ And more people move around in Omni Blue & Green for example. It's super hehe.
