Hi, I'm patching DAoC right now.. I've always wanted to play it, and have a little once a long time ago.. Like 20 minutes maybe..
But anyways, I'm getting it and I'm curious about the gameplay.
DAoC is a pretty old game, so does it have gameplay like EQ1? Meaning Warriors will just turn on auto attack and that's it? Or do melee classes get buttons to push?
Thanks

you gain combat abilities that give you buttons to push.
As a melee class, you click an enemy and hit q, to get out your weapon (you won't be doing that much though, there are a pretty good amount of moves you get). Or get out your weapon and then attack.
Also there are positional styles, where you have to stun and move to the back or side further on in the game (hard to master for PvP)
If you're a spell caster, there isn't a bar that fills up (like WoW), but everything casts pretty fast. You can be interupted.
With archer classes, you drag your bow to your quickbar and hit the button three times (Auto-fire, Reload), once (Ready), Twice (to auto shoot but not reload), or 4times to cancel your shot.
Hope that helps.
Classes that melee get both positional styles as mentioned above, as well as severak reactional style chains. Each weapons style (Slash, Pierce, Crush) brings different things to the table, but most work off of reactions from parry, evasion, and blocking (if a shield wearer)
So, no, you won't just turn on a button and swing away.

To add to what has already been posted in response to your question:
Combat in DAoC is anything BUT hitting your attack button and waiting for the combat to finish. In addition to the positional styles that the previous poster spoke about, there are several styles that can only be used after you've evaded an attack, blocked an attack with your shield, or after you've parried an attack with your own weapon. Furthermore, there are style "chains" where in order to do style C, you first have to succesfully use style A, then style B, etc.
Finally, many styles in the game have additional effects, instead of just adding damage to the original attack. Depending on your class, and the weapon you're using, some styles will cause your opponent to bleed (doing extra damage that "ticks" for a few seconds), some styles will stun your opponent for a brief duration, some will cause their attacks to slow down, some will slow their movement (snaring them, in essence), some will cause magical damage to "proc", some will cause you or your group to be healed, etc. There's a lot of different options out there, and there are some pretty cool combat animations out there.
Personally, I've found combat in DAoC rather engaging, and not difficult at all to master.
Hope that helps.
(Edit: LOL, sorry, Kyleran... I must've been typing my response while you were doing yours.)
