With games the way they are now, a gig of ram is almost a minimum.

From what ive read windows Vista alone needs 750 meg to run so yea id say soon within 3 months or so 2 gig will be the minimum.

    1 GIG for wiondows

Bear in mind your motherbourd may not be up to a gig of ram as it could be too old. It would help us if you told us how old your computer is and if possable what type of motherbourd you have got.

Well then you must be told then that any motherbourds over a year old are most likely unupgradable you see the older motherbourds cant even support a gig of ram which is why i upgraded in june and i now have 4 gig. Also new pipeline technology ahse come out making motherbourds much better.

Also here is a fun fact a decent motherbourd can add between 10-25% to your computers performance.

As for upgrading id advise you make yourself a new computer ill see if i can find the site i used for getting the cheap aprts [cheap but still top of the range].

Ok good news i see you live in the UK and thats where these people are so like me delivery will bwe quick and reliable so dont worry about these guys they are reliable and good.

basically expect to spend around 700 pounds because if you want a computer that not only lasts you a few years but is upgradable too you will need to spend a bit of money to begine with. In the end i personnally found making my own computer worthwhile as for 730 pounds i got a computer with the following stats.

Pentium D 3.75 Duel core processor

A Gigabyte motherbourd [ get one of these m8 these are very good motherbourds for the price]

    4 Gig of ram

a top of the range sound card

    250 gig hard disk

    A 7950 Nvida graphics card

Now this is what computers today are. and my computer puts any next generation console to shame.

    Hammie,
there are different sorts of RAM so you have to find out what goes with your mother board. If you know a trustworthy and competent dealer, ask him. It might be a bit more expensive than mailorder, but can save lots of trouble.

If you don't have an expert handy, you have to do research.

    Step 1)
Find out the manufacturer and model of your board. Look at
-any manuals that came with the computer
    -the BIOS messages at booting
-the board itself, maybe some info is printed on it
-a Google search about the computer model (for instance, something like Dell Dimension 666) might help too.

    Step 2)
Find out what memory the board supports. Since you said the computer is 2-3 years old, I'd guess at DDR 400 RAM. But better safe than sorry, so do some research.
-If you are lucky, you have a manual for the board.
-If not, try the manufacturer's website
-Google search for <model>  review. Tech magazines often go into much detail and mention the supported RAM type in passing.

    Step 3)
By now, you hopefully know what memory is needed and how many slots are free. I recommend one GByte of new RAM, if possible the same speed category as the original.
    Good luck buying image

Problem is many of the older motherbourds just wont be stable with a gig of ram and soon with windows needing 750 meg just to run you will need even more ram.
