Reduce the gay light effects and increase bloodiness IMO.

Seemed like nothing special. What the hell does RvR stand for btw?

Couldn't find video. Where is the RvR video at? RvR stand for Realv Vs Realm by the way.

We need another thread just for this?

Oh well, I don't have much to say about it since its really nothing new to the people who actually did research and found all of the other videos of people playing the game on YouTube. I do say the combat looks like basically any other MMO, but without the interface no one could tell how the players were interacting with the game world. It does give a clearer/better look into the raw RvR gameplay. I'll wait to see more.

I will say the sound was terrible though, but then again, its Alpha. I mean if we all judged games by their Alpha, than ALL games would be crap, I would love to see how many people actually have seen games in development from Alpha to final product. This is easily one of the better alphas I have ever seen.

Yup, I have similar comments about it.

    The Good

    • The actual combat animation seemed pretty smooth.
    • Combat looked like it could quickly become enjoyable.
    • Orcs tower over the stubbies!

    The Bad

    • The actual sound effects immediatly felt like they could get anoying over time.
    • The Flashy spell animations that are likely to cause seizure in young children.
    • Charicter movement appeared sudden and jerky.
    • Lack of Detail and "Flashiness" on all the Charicters was Disapointing. (i hope those were like "Noobs" or at the very least just examples of very basic equipment)
    • Casting Animation while under attack. It just seemed totaly wrong when that goblin was getting hammered, falling backwards slightly, and then comming back directly to casting as if everything was fine)

I would have liked to see some Player perspective action; HOWEVER, I must definitly agree that it is WAY too early to be passing any sort of judgement on the game in or any part of the game just from this preview.

For a Preview generated from an alpha/early beta build of the game i was thoroughly impressed with what it showed. Compared to other games that i have seen previews of durring the alpha 1 year before thier launch, This was simply amazing. image

Well if screenshots are what the graphics really look like, then I would say that this video was run on lower settings.  From what I have seen the screenshots look great, while this video looked a bit turned down.  Maybe the horrible sounds are just place holders for now?  I can't imagine those would be the actual sound they are planning to go with.  They are totally annoying and dont really fit with the fantasy theme.

as said before, this is by far not the first ingame footage that has been posted.

second, from a movie like this, you can hardly see how the PvP/RvR will really be. You only see some Dwarfs smashing down some Orcs. You will only really know how the combat system is if you played it...

Hmm, the video looks alright. It's obviously VERY early days, and as such none of the particle effects that will be used in the finished version are in place etc. Everyone is dressed in identical armour too. I do like the look of the combat, though. I like the fact that the Dorf was able to knock an Orc off his feet.. that kinda thing is cool.

It's not terribly impressive just yet, but it's such early days theres almost no point in even taking that video into consideration.

  • busdriverbusdriver Member Posts: 859
I couldn't see even half of the combat from all the pretty flashing colors following each swing. Other than that, it was ok.

  • LasastardLasastard Member Posts: 604
Since it is apparently early alpha, judging it is not really fair. But then again, they released it so it must be something that they are happy with.

    So here goes:

Personally, I have nothing against the Warhammer artwork, but the video looks and feels a lot like WOW. I think it would be possible to stay true to the Warhammer look without copying WoW. I know, WoW copied the Warhammer artwork, but again: Its all a matter of interpretation and vision and that video looks 99% like WoW game footage to me.

The animation..well, early alpha. But I dislike how much it looks like a korean low budget grind MMO. It doesn't look like serious combat, somehow. Much too cute. The animations should be a bit more sophisticated, after all its almost 2006 and we have seen animations of that quality years ago already. Hard to put my finger on it, but its just not ...good enough, or at least doesn't meet my expectations, being a longtime DAoC player. I would expect something that goes from DAoC and shows improvement. But I can't see improvement over DAoC in that video, too much comic-style. For example, the character-posture is always the same after each swing, which makes it look boring. Too much flashy lights  and so on (not judging the sound, because I simply assume that they will improve it).
Well anyway, still one year to go and enough time to get it right

I thought it looked fine for alpha footage
Plus these were all tier 1 (level 1 -10) characters so we didnt get to see any kind of Face-melting special attacks.

We're looking for a WoW killer here gentlemen.  Stop cutting them slack...

Weapons looked plain, not a lot of character movement for pvp, looked more like you'd expect when grinding low level mobs, and, I thought animation was lackluster.  Spells-effects were the only things that looked like they were enjoying themselves--a little too much.

This vid represents the game that people are anticipating.  If they can't impress then they shouldn't release till they have something that does.

I don't know why people were expecting some full blown characters with powerful spells. I appreciated the video because it gave me an early look at how the game was progressing. And were not looking for a WoW killer, were looking for a good warhammer game.image

Are you suggesting that warhammer only compete with itself?  If they are going to make the sales I'm sure that EA bought them for they have to wrest WoW player's attention--people who have gotten used to the over-all quality of WoW and the PR/Marketing excellence of Blizzard.  There are plenty of people tired and dissatisfied with WoW but that won't be enough if certain standards aren't met.  Look in some of the forums of all the WAR guilds already forming and tell that me a vast number are not looking for a WoW killer.  I was more impressed by vids of the early WoW alpha leak than this crap.

Warhammer competes directly with other RvR games, ie DAOC.

Im sure some WoW players will try it out, WoW really cracked open the MMO market to new blood.

You like WoW, i get it.

People think of "WoW killer" in their own way, i hated the PvP in WoW, so if WAR delivers, it is in my mind a WoW killer, other people will disagree. "what? no 40 man raids? screw that!"

Ive seen some of the videos from the WoW alpha... nothing special, fairly dull placeholderish stuff.

If you like WoW that much, i suggest you keep playing it, perhaps it is the perfect game for you.

To all the bitching and moaning by people who don't understand the term Alpha. Here's a quote from Gersh on the vid.

*shrug* I wasn't personally expecting to see a combat vid any time soon *shrug* In hindsight though I'm pretty satisfied with the way it looks for where we are in production right now

Orcs and dwarves are about 80% - 90% along animation wise. Most of their abilities are blocked in and pretty playable but they havn't gotten a final polish pass, and secondary animation on things like hair, etc.. So yeah yer ganna see a bunch of sliding glitches, some popping here and there etc, welcome to Beta 1!

Of course we are working on these items, however remember the goal for beta is to get it all playable so people can test out the actual abilities and gameplay. Polish comes only after we get the abilities where we want them and they stay set in stone. Why polish an animation for an ability that might not be there in 3 weeks?

Besides do you really want us spit polishing the first pairing more? Or would rather see some stuff from say umm Chaos?

    -Gersh

I like the more realistic looking weapons myself...

After watching the video I came to the conclusion that PvP looks and sounds better in WoW. Good thing it's only Alpha and it's going to change.

OK sports fans heres my opinions for those who care.

Firstly let me be blunt because thats who I am... Im not impresed. Not at all.

It looks like they are going the direction of flashy any funny insted of gritty. Appealing to the masses of 11 year olds who want to play and look at fun  and funny things.  Between that explosion of happy green orbs of energy from the runepriest and the big foot of doom that crushes people , its looking rather silly indeed. Ok so perhaps the giant foot that comes down is a very important part of orc lore, but can we make it and everything else in the game LOOK less cartoon and more like a wargame?

Anyone see how DAoC looked when it was released? I was there from the beginning. I want this game to at least look like DAoC year 1. what I would prefer is for it to look like DAoC NOW and look more like a graphic novel and not a cartoon strip. And dont patronize me by saying "they are just tier 1" either. This game clip reminds me of playing final fantasy 7. Too much glitz and glamor can take away from the game.  I know its already turning me off. at least its not like wow and all the fighting takes place while jumping in mid air and spinning in circles. Im guessing there is a stick and face command and spells are not insta cast.... thank god.

Im still going to play it though, it could be a bunch of cartoon charachters running around hitting eachother with giant sized foam mallets, it will still be a pvp based mythic war game so its gonna be good. But I just wanted to say how dissapointed I am by the rainbowbright type "tickle me elmo" sounding first glimpse of pvp.

Since when did sound effects in combat sound good? I haven't heard any game so far that has good sounds in combat. But tell me if you have found any.

Bright Green=Shaman Spells! Orcs are green. Goblins are Green. Gorc and Mork are probably Green. Most Shaman spells in warhammer are described as being green. So why wouldn't Shaman Spells be Bright Green?

And yeah, Runepreist Runes were a little shinney but they have to visable to the enemy to know what you're going up against, you know?

Why don't you make a picture of what you think the spells should look like and say "Here, Mythic. Do this!"

I wasn't really impressed after watching the video, but I didn't expect to be either. After all the game isn't even close to release and the video was very short with low tier characters. I think this video wasn't supposed to draw new players into the game, this video was just a sneak peek. We haven't seen anything close to real RvR yet!
