The next person that posts - will probably tell you to make a character on the Classic server - LOL
I suggest trying both the regular servers and Classic and see which you like best.
Some say the game is dying - which doesn't exactly encourage other to play either.
It is hands down the best PvP game out there at this point in time. You don't have to be top level to PvP either. There are battlegrounds level specific to help you learn the ropes and gain experience along the way.
PvE isn't the best I spose, but not terrible either - helps with leveling anyway. and if you find you like that there is also a server exclusively PVE.
I still enjoy the game and think there is something for everyone.
If you join regular servers you might as well start off by buying two games so you can get a buffbot.
Also if you join a regular server, be sure that you have ALOT of time to spend on the game in order to get a fully grown character ready for rvr. And prepare to be on youre own up until highlvl, if you get picked up by a guild you might get powerleveled up to 50 so you can start working on all the other stuff.
If you join a classic server you will most likly have a better experience. But that's my opinion, take it for what it is.
If you join classic you can group with others in youre lvl all the way up to 50. and you can play all classes without having to compete with a lvl 50 standing outside the group's doing the same thing so you wont be needed etc.
PvP is what DAOC is all about..and its best feature.
Its really more Realm vs Realm but there are many opportunities to enjoy smacking down enemy factions....
