I read few things people suggested about AoC and it looks very very promising.
As a huge Shadowbane
fan, I only care about PvP in MMORPGs and after Shadowbane died
(you really need at least 1.3k of people on server at any given time for Shadowbane PvP to be fun imo) I have tried NUMEROUS mmorpgs and they ALL fail in PvP. Except EVE but I want Medieval settings, not space age
.
In any case, anyone else thinks this is as close to Shadowbane PvP as it gets? I mean the only thing better is if Shadowbane 2 comes out ( for me anyway ) but Age of Connan sounds like they finally get us FPS fans who want the same experience in MMORPGs.
I sooooo hope they will make those FFA PvP servers the developers say they can impliment as soon as demand arises. Anyway, just posting to share my excitement! First post yay!

Ok, Funcom is a firm believer in consentual PvP, in other words, both players need to give some form of consent before combat can begin.
Now, before you stalk off in disgust, bear this in mind: Consent includes the act of stepping into certain zones.
On a normal server, it is FFA pvp in the borderlands (massive resource zones with a guild city siege system quite similar to Shadowbane's), arenas, taverns and a few other locations. On a PvP server, it is FFA PvP almost everywhere except certain cities and respawn points.
Death in PvP means a respawn at a temple or other site, temporary stat loss, and possible item degredation. Your killer additionally has the chance to loot your corpse for a percentage of your saved blood money, but not any of your regular cash or items.
Everyone starts out with some blood money, which is esentially a form of currency used to purchase items off of Hyboria's black market. These items are made first and foremost to be used in PvP, the only way to aquire more blood money is kill others for it. Blood money additionally cannot be stored, so you are always at risk.
PvP has its own skill, feat, and XP trees, seperate from their PvE counterparts. Precisely how the two work together is unknown.
Note: While it is FFA PvP, certain measures have been put in place to cull Ganking. The first is a Bounty Hunter system, kills in certain areas, such as just outside of the major cities, that are considered to be "dishonorable", earn you an NPC squad howling for your head. They were also toying with an autoleveling system, for the purpose of evening the playing field so to speak, but the status of that is unkown, it may have been scrapped.
Additional note: the above measures only protect people in certain areas, not in the borderlands, and not in some of the other wilder spots.
P.S. I'm quite willing to go into detail if I'm able on certain points if you need clarification.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
Ok, Funcom is a firm believer in non-virtual worlds...

Wow... i never gave this game any attention until i saw that post, it's almost exactly what i'd like to see in a game.
The combat system sounds very interesting too, i've always been a FPS'er and to combine it into the MMO like they described in their FAQ just sounds amazing.

To be honest, that, I don't know. Its fairly safe to assume FC is considering that problem, but just what way they will deal with it they have not said.
It may be that the amount you loot and the amount that the victim loses are not always the same. If player A for example just spent his last BM coin, then player B kills him. Player B might still gets some blood money anyways, not nearly as much as from someone that has been saving it up, but still enough to keep the mini-economy going.

Mavolance, Im playing UO on a player run server, I mean hell after aos the game was ruined on the ea servers. I was wondering whats the rules on the seige perilous server, also whats the population on that server, the free server I'm on now averages a little over 1000 at any given time.
Funny, I started playing UO nine years ago. I quit after the aos patch as did all the veterans. I played just about every game out there since. A few months ago I figured Id try UO on a player run server and its still the best mmorpg ever.
I'm not really sure how well the pvp or game dynamics will be in AOC, but without looting I cant get too worked up about it. They give you blood money instead which is the same as silver faction money that UO did six years ago. Unless they implement full looting this puppy might just be WOW with blood money, cant really tell until its released.
Any info on the seige perilous server would be appreciated, thx.
Thx for info everyone and I got few questions about UO now.
1. What kinda loot drops of the bodies when you kill another player in UO? (all inventory and all equipment or something else?)
2. If you drop/lose everything after your death in UO, how hard was it to get all your equipment back?
The problem I have with mmorpgs is that I hate grind and I hate farming. Killing the same mob and doing the same dungeons hundreds of times (cough WoW, the only game I tried to get into after Shadowbane) just to get some item is like a chore/job to me. People complain that when you get to 60 in WoW there is nothing much to do. Well I played the game on and off for about 5 months and I never GOT past 54 and thats after FORCING myself to grind/instances.
Shadowbane on the other hand became helluva PvP game after they made it so you can have a lvl 75 char (cap) in about a week. And you could visit all the player merchant towns in one day and get your training/equipment so you would be all set for PvP. Only your inventory droped and not your equipment, hence, if you die in pvp/pve, you just repair and go on to fight some more. What I am getting at, is that once equipment and lvling is not a major time-sink, only then can there be truly a great FFA PvP, imo.
I must say that of all the mmorpgs that came close to making the most enjoyable world for me was Shadowbane and I have tried all the top mmorpgs on current market. I still get fond memories of how many different guilds formed Nations (cough zergs cough) and then have huge wars in ala GiantNation vs UnitedServerLittleGuilds. The diplomacy in Shadowbane was truly unique and best feature that made PvP in game shine. Basically, you would have one guild leader/nation ruler (ala King/Emperror) who would command hundreds if not thousands of players (when the game was still popular). I remember one scenario where a guild leader of one nation came into a netral player owned merchant city and was killed while on his newbie character. Just becaue he felt like it, he said that if the owner of the city wont give him money (forgot how much exactly), his city will be baned(sieged) and taken over. Horrible but how true to life!
And dont forget the best spell every to be every created (as far as I know) in any mmorpg: Summon.
I freaking spent 2.5 months trying to enjoy WoW and 2.5 months RUNNING FROM ONE PLACE TO THE OTHER. Ugh...
Sorry for Ranting just had to get it out of my system There dont seem to be SB2 in the making
