Thinking about playing

dekabaldekabal Member Posts: 3

I'm thinking about starting to play eve online but I have a few questions. I know that most of you will say to play the trial but these are questions I would like to know these things before I start playing the trial.

  1. I heard that eve online is pretty complicated. How long would it take to get the basics of the game down.
  2. How complicated is the economics system.
  3. What is the combat like.
  4. What is the best part about the game

    1) 14 days trial seems accurate if you're lucky, maybe less if you get a lot of outside help from the channels.

    2) Well, it kinda mimics real life and does a hell of a good job at it, I don't know if this qualifies as good or not, depends on the player really, I understood how escrow works, I still don't know what escrow is...but english isn't my first language so..

    3) combat is pretty nice, the graphics are very pretty, most things are automated, I understand from veteran players that there's more depth and tactics to what I've seen in the 14 day trial, but I suppose you need to devote some serious pvp learning to it if you want to master everything, I for one don't have that time:)

    4) I would say the graphics and sound, it really creates a very nice vibe...I still can't get over the warphole thingy...drools...

    1) Definently use the 14 day trial, go thru the ENTIRE tutorial, and check out the New PLayer Q&A section of the Eve Forums for advice, the Rookie Help chanel in game is usually too flooded to ask questions there, so ask them in your starter corp channel. Also try to hang out in the recruitment channel once in a while to see if a decent corp that sounds nicefor you is rercruiting members.

    2) The economics system is only as complicated as you let it, and once you learn how can easily be used to your advantage. When you bring up the market it shows you the prices of every single person with any item you search for, what they are selling at, and how much they will pay to buy it. If you go to another region you will see a completely new set of prices. Therefor if you find a good trade route you can potentially turn a profit simply buying items in one region, and hauling them to another. Minerals are usually a good way to start trying this.

    3) Combat is superb. Once you learn how the ship fittings really work, and what modules compliment a specif ship very well, you can easily use a ships bonuses to make a brilliant ship for what you are trying to do. In PvP, you can use this to your advantage and fly a nice ECM boat, with a partner running a quality damage ship. You will basically be trying to screw your target out of being able to fight while your friend pounds him into oblivion.

If you don't like PvP and simply want to kill belt rats or run combat missions, the fighting is actually easier, since all you have to worry about is dealing out enough damage, and keeping your tank running strong enough, and long enough to keep you alive as all the mission spawns engage you.

    4) I agree that graphics and sound are nice, but the real best thing about Eve is the pure freedom that it allows you. You can make billions without ever firing a shot, or touching a mining laser if you know how to influence the market. You can become an outlaw, and engage in piracy to an extent that you can never enter empire space again, or on the opposite can engage you life hunting down pirates in low sec to make the system safer for all who mission/mine there. Pretty much anything you want to do can be done at any time for any reason.

    1. On the contrary, it is a very simple game, even primitive. You saw single player space games more complex than this in the 90s. You do have PvP in EVE, but apart from that the game is not much more than a wallpaper changer.

    2. Simple, hoard in money easily, then waste them on ships if you PvP. A newbie can easily make millions in a few days, so no challenge there.

    3. You will get a chance after a year training skill points. Don't even have to play to do this, so no challenge there either. You still have to pay even if your not online, though. Alternatively you can do PvE combat, but its so bad you soon grow bored.

    4. That you can unsubscribe easily. It is by far the most overestimated game out there. It should not even be in the yop 30 on the mmorpg.com list. Being #1 for so long really undermines the credibility of the list.

And what was your characters name so I can find out how old it was, my guess is less than a week since you never made it past the trial and that of course means your just regurgitating what othes have told you and don't really know wtf your talking about.

So, in closing, proof that you actually played the game or STFU.

I have a couple of friends who feel this way.....they are just upset because they can't afford to pay monthly after the trial. They are in high school though.

This is as far from the truth as I have ever heard or Read.

You either want a game that is easy point and click or has a very very short learning curve. EVE is a wonderful game and the Graphics and sound are also pretty good.

Eve is a Sandbox. If you don't enjoy it then it is not the game but yourself. Maybe it is not the sort of game you are looking for or it is too complicated for you. Either way. If you decide not to play then that is fine as long as you make up your own mind and not listen to the sort of incorrect information given in the quote.

Eve is as far from primitive as it can get. I am a pretty hardcore gamer myself and this game is exceptionally detailed and has so many choices, skills, ways of playing, etc etc. It is a complete univese that is a sandbox. Considering that almost the entire Market is player driven I do not understan how it can be called primitive.

Eve is not about making money. And yes you can make a million pretty easily. But then again a Crusier can cost over 6mil ISK. So a million is not really a lot of money in the game. If you want to be rich and hoard your money then that is fine. Go for it. It is your character and your game.

So what if it takes real time to go up skills rather than game time? That gives those people who have JOBS and are active in Real Life a chance to also be good and enables us to have a fighting chance in the game. I have a very serious job and do not have the time to spend playing games all day everyday. If you grow bored in PVE then go to a lower sector where the the Rats (computer controlled Pirates) are more difficult. Trust me arriving in a Friage against a Battlecruiser Rat is not boring. Also if you are running around doing Lvl 1 missions in a Cruiser it is boring as the Lvl 1 missions are designed for Frigates and Destroyers.

I stayed away from Eve for as long as I could. Then on one business trip I had nothing to do so I decided to give it a run. After 2 days playing I upgraded my account to a paying account and have not looked back. I have been playing for around 4 months now and I am still not bored or hating the game.

This is a game for Adults and people who have an imagination. IF you want to be UBER in a week and go out and Kill everyone or greif etc etc this is not the game for you as you will get owned.

Your choice play or not but please don't believe the quote as it is not even close to the truth.

I think all the questions have allready been answered. All i can say is i have played many mmorpgs and this one is the most open ended and fun game yet! Mature community they always help great economic system a sharp learning curve but with the new free expansion rookies will  have an easier time. Graphics getting a little old now but still stuiningly majestic and beutiful. Free expansions and there laways patching and updating! They also do try to improve the game it doesnt feel like the type of wow money making buisness it feels likes its made for your enjoyment! IM incredibly biased and i love it!

    All praise EVE image

Right, I’m going to have to play this game, I
have read too much about it not too. Opinion is so polemic.

But I hear this ALL the time:

    “If you're new and
thinking about playing this game don't bother.  You're just going to waste
a lot of time and be target practice for players who had the game since
release.  There's no way to compete unless you can form a gang with older
    members.”

    And have no friends
there. Hmm. Any one got a good strategy for buying a nice fast little ships that’s
hard to kill so I can just fly around for hours on end?

You are safe as anything in high sec space and the Rookie Corp especially Gallente Fighters Corp is very lively and friendly. When I started a few of them even came and helped me with a mission I was stuck on.

    Two words:
    FREE TRIAL

Basics are easy to get.  Later on you'll learn the more complicated stuff.  As a new player all you really need are the basics to get going.  And you learn those during the tutorial.

Econimics is just like the rest of the game.  The basics are easy to pick up.  Later on you'll learn how to use regional pricing and other aspects to the game to your advantage.

Combat, again, is like the game itself.  The basics are easy to pick up.  Pretty soon you'll get into the deeper aspects of determining the correct damage type, what weapons do well for various tasks, whether it's better to shield or armor tank, whether it's better to go with heavy resists or lots of shields/armor/hull etc.    But the basics are easy...

Personally for me there really is no best part.  I like most aspects of eve.   But then, it's "the game" for me.  You may or may not like it.

See my two words, up above.  Find out for yourself.

Just go with the "intercepter hull" ships. those beingteh Executioner, Condor, Atron, and Slasher. Besides that just practice "tacking", or not fly directly at your target but off to the side reversing direction occasionally. This will keep a higher transversal velocity which will make it much more difficult for ships to hit you.
