It's not free to play, it has an item shop. Someone is buying those items to keep the game alive. Of course, no one ever admits to it. All item shop games suck because of their inequity and immersion destructive nature. A virtual world's boundaries do not include real world money.

These games with item shops are eternally flawed because of a pay for benefit reward system as opposed to earning it in game. Of course some will argue that this happens in the secondary market of most games, but there is a big difference between players violating the EULA and a game developer destroying any chance of fair play and sportsmanship themselves. Also in the secondary market of other games, at least the items are earned in game, not coded from thin air which is even more imbalancing for a virtual world's economy because there is no limit or virtual exchange of labor equaling expended effort.

The funny thing is, that in many MMORPG's that use an item shop model, the items in the item shop aren't even such a big deal, heck, in many item shops, the items don't even have an impact on the gameplay, as they are just fashion things. And it IS free to play, since you can chose to fully leave the item shop for what it is and play without ever buying anything. it removes 15$ a month, doesn't sound bad at all.

    Don't go offtopic.

I've played a lot of F2P games, and I've never ever used an Item Shop.

Aren't playing Rappelz anymore, but it seems to improve the game a great deal. I might just return some day...
