Best MMO for crafters? Need help.

Hello community,

Oh Im bored to death.  I have played SWG for 3 yrs, WoW since launch, dabbled with AO, COH, EQII, EVE, DAoC and some others.  I am looking for a game that has a depth to its crafting system.  So far SWG is by far the best I've played.  I love being able to decorate houses and that ingredients have stats so that items can varry in their outcome.  These two things are what I'm getting at when I ask for help in looking for a new MMO to turn to.  If your suggestion happens to be an MMO I have dabbled in perfect I will go back and give it a try.  Quick list to help you assist in pointing me in the right direction.

Im looking for:

1) Housing: ability to place objects in home

2) Sophisticated crafting system

3) Lots of collectable loot, tons of stuff just looted to collect and decorate with

*Lol maybe Sims online is for me? *

Thanks for your help...I feel like I'm dying in the world of MMO and I dont want to leave but Im just bored and want to find my home again in the right MMO.  Thanks again!

    Saga of Ryzom is crafting-oriented.

EQ2, if you can deal with the rest of the game.

That would be my 2 recommendations to a crafters...maybe Horizons, EvE or a Tale in the Desert, depending on your tastes.  I heard that THERE is nice, a surprise the THERE fanboi didn't pop up...yet.

Well in my opinion EQ2 has the best crafting and housing decoration etc with SWG second.

If you've played them both then i got no other suggestions for ya except maybe Horizons, great house and land building options but rest of game kinda stinks.

I have never really given EQII a chance...never got out of my teens in level...I just bought the latest expansion and will give it a fair run this time.  Thank you so much for the tips and suggestions.  Very helpful guys.  Just to feel some direction is hopeful.  Ty again.

    EQ2 hands down

And there is a completely free (no card) trial -> although no crafting/housing in it

But it sucks to start playing EQ2 now when Vanguard (eq2.5) is out the door soon

Ryzom has a pretty advanced crafting system, you harvest and loot a great variety of materials that you will need to experiment with to get the stats you want on your items, takes a bit of time to learn, but if you get into it it's pretty adictive (involves alot of material gathering though :p unless you're in a guild that has dig addicts)

As a minus, housing is only for storage at the moment

hope you find your place ^^

    *hugs from lil me*

*Brain down for upgrade, don't try to understand my logic, I don't...*

QFE. Though EQ2's crafting was "dumbed down" a bit it is still one of the best I have seen. I have also heard A Tale in the Desert has a nice crafting system, but I have never played it.

Thanks to all of you for your responses all are very helpful.  Vanguard seems like it will be the new home to serious MMO fans and I am looking forward to it arrival.  EQII and Ryzom seem to offer the most by way of crafting...Ryzom having the cartoony style however...hum...think Im gonna jump into EQII fullspeed until Vanguard is released...if the patch willl finish updating that is! =)

A Tale in The Desert, crafting is the main focus.

    Also, try Wurm Online.

UO Reborn has a skill based crafting system.  Lots to craft and lots of collectibles and rares  to decorate your house(a wide range of things to collect over 9 years)  and customizeable houses.

Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished

or just plain ole uo, if you don't mind it's dated graphics.

plus let's see the things you can have for rp/collecting/etc.

aquariums.  feed the fish and they'll grow, have babies (i think) and randomly spawn rares and other objects, such as (i believe) sea shells, little toy ships, fish bones, etc

plants.  different types of plants, you can breed/crossbreed, get mutant rare colors (black and white are the rare colors i believe) and also get specials from the breeding/crossbreeding.

taming.  i think there's still that 5 point limit on active tames, plus whatever you can have in the stables. gone are the days of taming every bear in the forest and filling the entire screen with your pets.  big uber dragons are like 3-5 points, lesser creatures only 1-2 points.  if you have similar pets out, they get attack bonuses, i.e. say you have several varieties of wolves, for each of the canine/wolf/whatever the family name is out, they each get a 20% damage bonus ( i believe).  also tame/ride unicorns, ki-rin, horses, ostards (ostrich type creatures), big beetles, swamp dragons, and a number of other rideable beasts.

completely customizable housing.  EVERYTHING, from it's foundation's size and shape, to how many floors, to the design.  make everything from a cave, to an orc fort, to an elven mansion, a medieval keep, wizard's tower, whatever you want.

fishing.  yes fishing.  fish up booty from sunken ships, messages in bottles with treasure maps, sea monsters, kraken, boots, shoes, and yes, even fish!

treasure hunting.  got a treasure map from a mob or mib (message in a bottle)? get to finding it!  lots of treasure guardians to slay (and whatever loot they have) plus the treasure chest itself.

crafting.  they've slowly added more and more and more to this over the past 9 years.  there's tons of everything to craft.  plus they've got those writs or whatever they're called, that you get from the profession guys.  i.e. work order for X amount of Y item(s).  you can turn those in for items that enhance your crafting ability, or for rares (i.e. rare colored cloths, scissors/sewing kits with bonuses, or perhaps a rare color dye tub for tailoring)

lil stones where you can save your skill points, in case you want to learn a new skill.  so if you have necromancy up to 100 (grandmaster) and decide you want to try say chivalry (paladin) or ninjitsu (yeah, ninja), you can save your necromancy and learn something else.

honestly, the only bad things uo has for them are

1 the first game to have customer service and have POOR, EXTREMELY HORRIBLY ABYSMALLY POOR customer service.  so as long as you don't have problems ingame, this shouldn't be an issue.

2 dated graphics yet they still charge like $15/month to play.  honestly, i believe if they lowered the monthly sub price, they'd pick up a lot more subs.  i could be wrong, but there's a number of people who would play this dated engine if it didn't cost as much to play as a new game.

2 should be addressed with kingdom reborn, hopefully.  i just hope it doesn't turn out to be a total joke like when they added the 3d client.  yes, i've seen the ads for it, but ads vs what gets put into the game, often are like day and night.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

wurmonline, a tale in the dessert fit the closest(except for the loot part)

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Nice write up on UO...hum.  Very tempting.  Everything you wrote about - crossbreading plants, feeding fish in your aquarime...etc that is it my friend! Thats the kind of endless nonsense that most ppl leave an MMO for that I desire! LOL...nice.

    Questions concerning UO though:

I have the 9th Ann. Edition and when I log in it gives me a 2d or 3d option are they two different games?  Will I be playing with others from the original UO?

And is UO Reborn out yet?

    Thanks!

    Very cool stuff

Like most of the other posts, I will agree with EQ2.  I've played EVE (Trial only), FFXI, WoW, and EQ2.  In EQ2 it does take a little while to get started because of all the gathering of materials, and depending on how many bags you have depends on how long of a crafting session you can have.  I have spent entire days just working on crafting because it's interactive.  WoW and FFXI you select what you want to make and make it (or break your crystal and lost your materials).  I'm not playing EQ2 right now (FFXI), but one of the main reasons I want to return is the crafting system.

It is the same game 2D and 3D, just a different client. But I realy would not play 3D, as it is only pseudo 3D and looks horrible. I have always played 2D and love. I am looking forward to UK:KR though. Will be strange in a way, hihi.

UO:KR will be realeased next year, we do not know which quarter thoug. We where assuming it would be in September as on the 27th will be our 10th annivewrsary, but they have hinted that it would come out earlier. So we are all guessing like mad in the moment, lol.

I absolutely love all the crafting that can be done in UO. I have all together 3 crafter just to have all crafting skills that I can play with. I run a huge shop, as we can have npc vendors standing in our houses, selling goods for us even when we are offline and they are fully stocked with all the good I am crafting like plants, armor, fishing stuff, lots of carpentry and masonary goods and general house deco. The artifact system is realy neat, lots of things to display in your houses :)

Have to say closest might be EQ2 .The housing are instances but once you get inside it has the most beautiful looks i ever seen in any mmorpg.

There is tons and i mean tons of household items to buy or quest for to make your house great looking. From paintings to bathtubs to household pets (including a demon hound drooling lava) to furniture. You name it.Also when you finish a heritage quest you usually get a nice weapon or armor you can use.If you can't use it (in some cases your class can't) oe outgrown it just mount and display it.I often look at my SSoY which was amazing for my 40-50s and then i outgrown it and now its on display.

The crafting is also fun and complex. It was even more complex but got dumped down for better or worse.

Auto Assault has a pretty advanced crafting system, and seems to be usable all the way up until the level cap.
There is also player housing, although I have yet to delve into how that works.

I know a lot of people are going to flame me for offering this up as a recommendation, but I actually love the game. Its the only MMORPG that I am currently playing.

    Hope this helps.

    Enjoy.

Personally, I don't see how instanced housing can be better then uninstanced (ie, SWG) image

SWG is about to have a revamp to the crafting system in the next Publish, could be worth hanging around for :)  Won't be changing the overall mechanics of the crafting system, but there will be a new additional system (that sounds like it will work a bit like EQ2's) that can be used to improve on the stuff you craft.  Not too many details on it yet.

I havent played the game in many years.  But if I remember correctly a site named Stratics was extremely comprehensive regarding UO.  Seems like everything you every wanted to know would be found there.

At Stratics, you will find everything you want to know about UO, except the truth.

Stratics and the UO developers developing the game based off forum complaints rather than experience, has been the bane of Ultima Online.
