So Vanguard is what we've been waiting for...

...but with a few xtra features. Vanguard seems to be what a lot of us older gamers (pre-WoW) have been waiting for. It gives us a modern and fresh start to the types of games we liked before, but will it be enough? We all have spent thousands of hours grinding classes upon classes and meeting new friends, building guilds and alliances. But after the newness of Vanguard wears off, will we still be up to the challenge? Will we really want to grind another 50-60 levels of the same types of classes with different make up and animations? Do we really want to extend ourselves to others for friendship, put in the effort to rebuild a guild and alliances to what our old ones used to be? Are we really going to want to step up to the task at hand...work? This game doesn't offer that much that is new, it will be like EQ and EQ2 in many ways, but with different skins to explore. But honestly, it will feel like we are doing the same thing as we have done in all the other games. What makes you all think that people like us will actually stick with it, when we have characters maxed out and communities built already in other games? Do upgraded graphics mean that much to you all? Does a fresh start stay fresh after the newness wears off and the WoW kiddies infiltrate the game and scream "Chuck Norris" all over the place? Are people really naive to think that WoW kiddies won't migrate over to Vanguard, especially if it is a huge success? In our old games, we do not have to put up with such nonsense, because the kids came after and with WoW. Our games are too outdated for them, which means we are left in peace. Vanguard will appeal to every player according to Brad...EVERY player. Do we all really want to wade through the crap community just to find our niche community under all the dirt? Is it really fair to have to do that in every game? We didn't have to in our old ones. With new blood and younger MMORPG gamers, that came with WoW; our new games will never be rid of them and we will always have that stain in every game. Kids are curious and they will come. They will annoy us and will take pleasure in destroying our game experience.

I'm just writing everything that comes to my mind right now when I think of buying this game. Writers call it free writing. What I am asking and writing is just meant to stir up thoughts in other peoples minds and hopefully people will answer these questions honestly and maybe we can get a serious discussion going.

Anyways, thanks for reading and maybe I will see you in game.

Well answer me this: as the years roll on and our old games fade into disrepair and expansion after expansion turn them unrecognizable; and with the new wave of casual games that seem to be far superior to the old (at least in the eyes of money hungry publishers) do we want to LOSE our games? Do we want to live in our memories and move on from MMOs? Eventually even the old titans will fall, along with their dwindling communities, and we will lose worlds... and the new worlds just don’t feel quite complete, not quite worlds, more like something to pass the time (a time sink? what is WoW, where the community is sh!t?). Will Vanguard bring back the wonder, the world where a true community may thrive? I hope so. After all what is an MMORPG without community, what makes it more than a game if not the real people we may interact and make bonds with. Player dependency... the term has become feared by many. God forbid we'll have to group with other PEOPLE! Yet that is what makes these games unique, that is what the new games are missing. It is the dynamic in an otherwise unchanging virtual world. If we can’t see this then the genre is lost. And don't fear the community, even if immature now.... remember always that we were all kids once, and we grew up...well most of us did, and we are still here. Embrace them and show them the way, the diversity they bring will grow even our games for the better. It may be that if the new mmo society witness's what a "game" is capable of and the depth and quality it can bring, they may change from that alone.

Vanguard has been called the last hope, the game that turns the tide, and brings back the true virtual experience where we may spend quality time. If it is, then how could we not expend the effort to build a world again, to build our guilds, and make our friends, and enemies. After all, it will be a different game becuase as society around us changes, the virtual worlds will change with us. Vanguard will give us more of a world than ever befor, so we may use it as our forum to live the adventure again.

And the kids will become adults, the years are already running since the launch of WoW and they'll continue on with Vanguard.

I have only one thing to say in response:

"WoW kiddiez" can be removed from Vanguard, but meaningful gameplay is already missing from WoW.

If Vanguard can give me a reason to play, without feeling the need to resort to 9-hour-long raids and gutless PvP, then I'll probably try it out.

I think it is looking to be a good game. Not sure though, as so many have looked that way in the past. Only to turn out to be crap. It does have SOE so that will help it some. At least in the beginning. Later on is another story.

It's all about the fantasy baby!

Yes we truly need another class/lvl based item centric instance grinding game.

That niche was just about empty, good thing Vanguard is coming!

I think the OP is voicing the fears of a lot of 1st generation players. I can remember when I used to play Anarchy Online, the so called "kiddies" stood out like a sore thumb, but it was amazing how they would change once they had gotten a little pride in their guild! But in those games they were the minority and the real headaches could be kicked with no loss.

Hopefully with housing, towns, crafting and diplomacy, social interaction will be more important than it is in WoW, we can always live in hope! The downside might come if the new kids in town hopelessly outnumber the 1st generation players.

On the upside those kids are far more fickle and could well drift to other games. The true core I suspect will come from "older" players and if this is the case we will be listened to more by the devs, only time will tell on that one!

As for "wading" through the game and will it remain exciting? I am feeling optimistic about Vanguard and as has often been quoted, it might not hold the suspense of your first great gaming experience, but if you enjoy MMORPGs as a form of entertainment, it certainly seems to be offering substantial content. Will be interesting to see how things develop.

Vanguard is what we've all been waiting for, A New game with great potential, I just hope the PVE and PVP Is Above average, I mean isn't that why we all play mmo's, We could just play games like oblivion but we want to interact with others and test skills with gamers alike, Good Player Interaction keeps the game smooth and fun for everyone, I just hope this game can actually be a SAGA

I think you're getting what I am trying to communicate here. I am a first/second generation gamer (DAoC/2002) and like you said, things like 1337 speak and immaturity and blatant rudeness was a minority. For the most part, in our old games, they still are a minority. I have drifted between 13 MMORPG's now playing the field, trying to recapture what I have lost, but I haven't been able to and all this has taught me is what exactly I was looking for, what kind of gamer I am, and what to look for in an MMORPG to be happy. I now have the recipe for my ideal MMORPG. It has been created already, but those communities are dwindling into nothing and people lose focus over time what MMORPG's are all about. I am looking for this recipe in a new game...Vanguard may be it, but as you've said, I am voicing my fears. Fears that I have aquired through painful experience in the newer MMORPG's including WoW and many others. Players like me are being pushed out the back door and developers are catering more to them anyways.

Yes, we may be able to change the kiddies into respectable community members, but is that likely? With Vanguard not taking a hard stance on playstyle and catering to everyone as Brad said, will kiddies just push us out the back door of this game too? I am an optimistic person, but I am being pessimistic this just one time...in this one thread. I believe it is something that people like me have to face and ask ourselves: Is our time in MMORPG history over? Will the times of community, instead of loot and 1337 ever come back? Will MMORPG's ever be something more than a game, like it was when they used to be virtual worlds (ie. a second life)?

Well, I guess I will just have to wait and see. I won't be buying this game at release more than likely, only because of bad Beta leaks and because I've beened burned before. Burned, meaning that I joined a game and the kids took over. I do have a tolerance for kids that I've built up over the years, but when I am tired ignoring and fighting them, as I am right now, the last thing I want to do is to help pioneer a games community and have to fight off immaturity at the very start. I would like to, for once, to be able to hop into a game and be able to be surrounded by mature respectable people, who want to work together to build a nice virtual atmosphere.

Thanks for contributing to this post. I'm sorry that I am a windbag, hehe.

I don't play MMORPG's to compete, but if the opportunity presents itself and I have a good reason to, I will compete with others. I more or less play MMORPG's to do things that I can't do in real life...that none of us can do in real life. I play them to join other people and overcome challenges, using the skills we have trained ourselves in to be who we are. Usually those challenges are PvE monsters, but they also include the challenge of building a strong nation/guild/alliance/city and also the challenge of defending our nation/guild/alliance/city even if that means PvP.

Maybe a good idea might be to check out Vanguard forums for links to guilds, I know a lot of people also have the same ideas as you and some are recruiting already. If you managed to join a more "mature" guild it could make quite a difference.

Good luck I hope you find the game you are looking for.  image

I don't know how to say this gently or cleverly if there is a need to do so; therefore I will simply say it, simply.

With the advent of VoIP software like TS2, Vent, etc, there is NO WAY to recapture the essence of the old days. Get your head out of the clouds for minute. Us old farts from the era of PnP, MUDs, UO, EQ, had a great thing going for us - ANONYMITY VIA KEYBOARD (not yelling just looks like it) - now that is completely lost. I hate VoIP for what it has done to MMORPGs. I laugh SO hard when someone mentions that they prefer the RP servers, but that everyone in the guild has to use VoIP because of this reason or that reason. I mean, are they being serious? ::::12:: I don't know of any voice synthesis software/hardware solution that changes your voice so you can properly role play! Do you?

For the love of brilliant games stop trying to figure out if this game or that game will have the features you need to have to make into a good game. I have a solution for ya'll: go back to old ways of playing reguardless of the game and see if the experience isn't increased in a positive way. Try everything possible to recapture the magic.

For me it was stuff like discovering that 'Felicia the Angry' was actualy a man named Tim Ozwalski, who loves the Chicago Bears and drinks Old Milwaukee, at the First Annual Everquest Guild Summit. I know exactly what made it special for me. I was not talking useless banter on VoIP. Iwas getting down to cases, moving through a dungeon 5 in-group, having to fight for the spawns. It was endless hours of reading books in the game to discover how the lore fit together to unlock the super secret vaults. I don't know, maybe if we stopped and thought more about where and how we play the game, rather than, who is ruining it for us, then we'll reach the conclusion much faster.

My son is 12 now, and it's about time he learns MMO life the hard way just like I did. I play my games - MY WAY - with candles burning in the background, mood music appropriate to the environments of the game, a high quality chair for hours of sitting, and healthy snacks to help qwell the hunger. I still get what I want out of my gaming experiences only because I take control of basicaly everything that I need to, that I CAN effect; the rest is out of my hands.

I don't enjoy certain games because I can't get confortable with limited or no custom control games, but mostly I can enjoy some aweful games if I've prepared myself for my game time just right. It's just like reading an aweful book, getting to the end of it, and then saying - 'gosh, that was better than I initialy thought!'

So do what you have to do prepare to enjoy your time in-game, kick back, and have nice Guinness with me ::::20::. We're about to game!

Good to hear how you made the games work for you Carrara, nice that someone can transcend the ever- increasing odds against old style game play!

Maybe you should start a new thread on the subject, getting people to share ideas, I think we really need some positive rationalization at the moment!

Be glad to share a glass of Guinness with you! image

            Cheers!!!

    Cheers right back at you!

I too have been waiting for VSoH, but not for the standard reasons. I want to support Brad McQuaid further develop games that alter the landscape of gaming in general and for the positive.

Even though this game may not encompass on the technological front everything that one may wish, its lore is positivily awesome.

But yeah I treat my gaming sessions pretty seriously, because it is my prefered entertainment outlett, right below reading.

Grinding does suck, but when you get that next level and that next ability it's all worth while :p

I think the BIG feature that will make the future of online gaming is the ability to put your char in mercenary mode, so while you are not playing others can use your char to assist them on their missions, generating xp for your char perhaps even items and wealth.  You build a good character that gets hired alot, then you get the play...

Be nice to log on to play your char and have someone say, hey man I took your pally out to tank for me in "dank crypt" and he was smoking the undead, I finished my quest thanks to him...etc..etc..

Unless that ability is the same as every other person of the same class. I hope it has the variety of DAoC when it comes to specialization choices. I don't want to be a clone of every other class out there that is the same as mine. WoW and EQ2's specialization is a bad way to do it aswell. But anyways.

Your idea for the Mercenary sounded good at first, but then I got to thinking. People would end up speccing their characters to maximize the chance of getting hired. So we would have just a bunch of clones running around.

I still hold hope that Vanguard will be this game. I cant say that it is only the Kiddies that have ruined past games, as I have played with 13 and 14 year olds that were great players and very mature. I have also played with 30yr olds that whined and stompped their feet everytime they didnt get their way (I'm45). I look forward to the huge world and ton of content. There are alot of fears that the original game as envisioned
by its creators has been dumbed down to appel to the masses. I so hope this is not the case. If it is indeed the case I hope the cries for an
Alternate ruleset server are heard. IE a server where their is no GPS, there are corpse runs, no  quest markers ect. This alone will keep the
so called bad elements off that server. And if all else fails I will find myself a mountaintop somewhere to build my cabin and become the
    Hermit of Telon.

I'm hoping that there will be some great challenges to this, but not so much that you need to be on for some 16 hours a day to make any progress

Well, as an old school gamer myself I find Vanguard to be far from what I am looking for.  Glad it is for you but nothing about vanguard, from the development team to the graphics of the game, appeal to me.  There are far more enjoyable games coming down the pipe, enough so that I. for one, will not get sucked into another raiding treadmill POS game.  If I enjoyed that I would still be in wow lol.  At least blizzard endeavors to put out a tightly developed smooth game.

  • ZANGFEIZANGFEI Member Posts: 439

well my friend .. I don't think it really matters which game we try to Enjoy/Play these days It will get totally ruined withing a very short period of time.

It's just the way it is now.. no Respect .. Honor.. just leads to disrespect and greed.

    Very sad but true.
