Hello, all you hardcore nerds-- I mean gamers... Right. (Read what I have to say)
I've decided finally that I really want to play an MMORPG. I've always been rather content just goin' out with my friends and playing regular games. I was somehow linked over to Runescape and started playing that for a while. That got me really hooked onto ONLINE GAMING. Yeah, hell... So anyways I go out and I play a bunch of nice little games such as Diablo II: LOD (USWest... ACCEPTING FREE ITEMS ON ACCOUNT: VDeity hehe), Starcraft, Socom, later Socom 2, LOTD: ROTK online. And that was all good and nice. Somehow, however, shortly after receiving my Pentium 4 gaming computer (and also I have been following the .Hack series... simulated MMORPGs are even more fun than D2 now lol) I stumbled across a gem of a game. Biosfear! I played that for about a day then they decide to go P2P on me. BLOODY HELL!!! (European game, you know...) Luckily I heard about Savage Eden later on and get into that game. I played it for a considerably longer period time than Biosfear...
...don't worry, I'm gettin' to my point....
And develop a rep.... AN ACTUAL REPUTATION!! I've never had a reputation on a game before. Usually on games like Diablo 2 or Socom you play with someone and you almost never hear from him again unless you become friends). I was known to be a ruthless 'sniper-pk'. It was so awesome. I'd be sitting on the edge of the PK field and people would see me and try to run, but I'd pick 'em off with Sniper Skill even though they weren't on the field. Joined the best guild in the game: Elysium (some people consider Tyrants the best, but we kicked their asses in the Castle Siege however the towers we were supposed to destroy were in their possession for so long that they've powered it up sooooo much that probably the entire server of players couldn't destroy them... bad enough as that was, THEY SHOT FIREBALLS AT YOU!! Most players died in a single hit, however I took three hits to get killed by 'em.
Then.... at the end of February....
I saw on the site that they were going P2P on March 13th... or maybe 15th I don't remember anymore. But anyways I decided to quit then than wait to the bitter end and get my ass kicked out because I couldn't P2P.
After that, all other online games seem to have lost their appeal to me. I still follow good single player RPGs and play online Action / Shooter games (Socom, CS, HALO, ROTK), but when it comes to RPGs... I can't stay interested in anything unless it has kickass graphics, great gameplay, and is massive with a HUGE world to play. Those free games just don't cut it for me, (though Planeshift is looking promising).
Here's the point I've been building up to.
I am close to getting permission to P2P and I want to pick the very greatest MMORPG overall out there to play. Has to have very nice 3D graphics, few bugs, LOTS of players, and some kind of story or a good community. What games do you, the richboy SOB nerds who are already enjoying P2P MMORPGs while I sit here and gaze at the Live Vana'Diel streaming video, recommend (yes, I was leaning towards FFXI, and if indeed that is what I pick, should I get it for PC or PS2?)
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to reading your replies. (See?? Runescape isn't good for nothing!! This whole cycle was started by Runescape! I hate them so much, but I [...... .... ... Distracted by my first viewing of combat on the Live Video from FFXI WHOO, looks nice!] also love them.)
(Nice little story I've got here, eh?)

Tough question...
My opinions (based on the games I'm playing now):
StarWars Galaxies - it's good because of the variety of professions you can choose. You can be a top player in combat, but still have enough skills points left to fall back on crafting if you get bored. The BEST community. They are starting to add more content. Graphics are very good (if you have a very good PC). The lanscapes are huge. Rubbish PvP though at the moment.
Final Fantasy XI - Excellent graphics. Quite a bit of content. Level grind can be dull and finding a good group can be tough. But I'm addicted at the moment. Just about to add PvP.
Lineage 2 - been playing about a week in closed beta. They are just about to go to open beta - so you can play for free for a month or so. Already quite a large community. PvP is the big thing in this game - lots of PK'ers at the moment which can be frustrating. Fast combat. Lacks ability to customise appearance of character. Graphics are good. Unfortunately the community is immature at the moment (lots of Europeans vs USA arguments, and various abusive.pointless shouts all the time). I like it but I doubt I'll stick with it after beta finishes.
To be honest I'd recommend you get a few free trials first as most of the MMORPGs are all pretty much from the same mould. Once you've got a taste for them then shell out your hard earned money on one that you like the sound of.
Well you're in the progesion. I did it too hehe. I started with games like Starcraft and Return to Castle Wolfenstein to Diablo II and Tanarus (anyone remember Tanarus?) to finally Everquest and MMORPGS.
Picking the best MMORPG out there is hard, but is it right to say you are into player versus player action? Also, do you want an MMORPG that has real time combat (Risk Your Life, Planetside) or one of the many other turn based or time combat systems like in Everquest, DAoC, etc.
DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) has by far the best PvP system out there IMO. Everquest probably has the best PvE system and content out there, but their PvP is almost non-existant. Starwars Galaxies has a wierd system that I don't think you would like, Shadowbane has too little people and a flawed system, FFXI from what I've heard seems to be a very basic hack 'n slash yet very fun and stable. I'm not sure what kind of MMORPG you are looking into. If you want PvP in your game, do you want 'gank fest' type PvP where you can attack most people of any level, or do you want a more set-up and established PvP system where you take bases, launch sieges, proper fights (DAoC).
Right now I'm playing Everquest, but in all truth I am only playing it because I have real-life friends who play it. If that wasn't the case I'd play DAoC. I'm also playing SWG right now just to test out the upgraded they did with the Player Cities and Vehicles/mounts.
Hook me up with some more info and I can (hopefully) pinpoint a good MMORPG for ya.

Well then, Brit. Here's some info for ya.
Yes you got me there, I do enjoy Player vs Player. For MMORPGs, I like really good graphics, decent character customization (Project Entropia has the greatest character customization out there, all those other games could take a lesson from this), I liked in Savage Eden where there were designated areas for PK where anyone could fight (or slaughter) anyone regardless of level and also they had organized events from time to time. Games with a good amount of content, lots of things to do, many places to explore, fun to fight mobs in groups, good amount of character classes, skills you can learn, i dunno. Good amounts of quests or missions, CG movies (just thought it'd be cool) but i guess most importantly, lots of friendly people (just cuz it's most important doesn't mean that it's outweighs everything else =P)
Kinda broad, eh? Hmmm. PK is lots of fun, but I do admit that in Savage Eden my guild usually met at the PK area just to socialize and kill anyone who came onto the field. Typically I came there just to take a break from leveling (a kickass FUN break at that), if there is enough to do, I wouldn't really need PVP that much at all, just as long as I CAN fight others, that'll satisfy me.

i dont know m8, i this you shot try out DAoC, there you have alot of PvE to build up youre cha and once you get to lvl 20+ you can start to hit the battle grounds and fight other ppl.
the goal is ofcorse to get ot lvl 50 where you go out to the real Realm vs. Rrealm wars
and start to build youre realm war skills.
but in the end you are the only one that can find the right game for you

Aye, it seems like DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) would be an excellent choice. It has alot of PvE content (they have 2 expansions which just gives new areas / classes / races to hunt at/with). The character customization isn't too good, however, I still think you would find it acceptable. They are coming out with a new Frontiers Expansion (free) that will make RvR (realm vs realm or PvP) much better. At level 15 you can start to PvP and it gets to be really fun. The community is great, but it varies on what server you go to.
Perhaps you would like to try Lineage II when it comes out. That has free PvP, but I don't know exactly anything else about the game
Everquest will be a no for you, same with Anarchy Online (plenty of content here, and PvP, but the PvP is not what I think you would like). Eve Online has great character customization, alot of things to do, a great community, and good PvP, but you fly around in space ships (your cup of tea?).
Anyways, before you take me up on DAoC try researching it a little bit at www.darkageofcamelot.com and www.camelotherald.com
Good luck, Cya
