Okay, here is my second poll on something I have been wondering about. What does the general population think of jumping in MMORPGs? I assume people are all for it, but just to check and make sure I'd like to take a poll and get some discussion out there about it. The one real problem I have with jumping is that people tend to use it to their advantage, sometimes unfairly, in PvP situations. Thoughts?

It depends on whether or not it actually gives an advantage in combat, players hopping around like jackrabbits to avoid damage is not good.
On the other hand, jumping allows for more versatility with the environment, simply being able to jump over obstacles can help with immersion immensely.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I won't play a game that doesn't have jumping.
It just takes any sort of realism out of the game.
I like to be able to surmount obstacles heheh.
Yes i often notice while on my way to work the amount of people constantly bunny hopping to catch a train. Also i'm amused at the people who tend to strafe left and right before crouching to get a bus too.
realism ?

I mentioned immersion in terms of the ability to surmount physical obstacles, not some of the absurd uses given to game mechanics by players.
In any case, I was more talking about the inability to get over an object you could step over in real life.

jumping is important in MMO's
for some reason i just could not get into a game where you couldnt jump.... i think it must be that you feel more free when you can jump around, i also like trying to do wierd things in game, such as climbing on top of stuff and walking on railings etc. Jumping just makes me feel more involved.
I can live without jumping.
If characters had some basic climbing, it would be OK to have no jumping, but most games don't have that. Yeah, sure, jumping straight over a fence is unrealistic, but I find that less of a problem than a three foot high fence making an impregnable obstacle for my character. Sure, I don't see people bunny hopping out on the street, but neither do I see them walk up to the curb, stop, then sheepishly go to the ramp at the corner to surmount that six inch barricade.
Also, what games does jumping give a huge PVP advantage in? I'm mostly familiar with DAOC and WOW, and the only jump trick that I'm aware of is that a ranged character can move, jump, spin around, fire an instant attack while spinning, and continue on in the same direction, which I never thought of as much of a big deal. From what I've seen, jumping in PVP just confuses newbies a bit.
Jumping is pretty good in some MMORPGs that have 3D graphics. At 2D MMORPGs when you jump(which in most of them, this is not possible) it doesn't really make sense, and it's just useless.

Well I'm 17 I can't help my dirty mind
That is the way I feel about it as well. Even if they have a low step, a two-foot barrier shoudln't be an impassable obstacle. Indeed, anything up to as high as you can normally jump and reach is probably fair game. If you have to get over an eight foot high fence you could probably grab the edge and pull yourself over on top. Or being lifted up, using a grappling hook, etc. etc. And I'm talking about just anywhere you are, not using a discrete "climb this fence" object (or all objects in the game have a set of possible climbs/jumps/whatevers, how ever you want to look at it).
In short, if we had a fraction of the range of movements we did in something like Splinter Cell, this wouldn't be a big deal. That doesn't seem to be a big priority with MMOs, though.
So, for the time being, your basic space bar jump is taking the place of any kind of climbing or big steps. Which is kind of annoying but for many people less annoying than being stuck to the ground. After all, if I'm some kind of stereotypical thief/backstabber fellow in light hide armor I'd expect to be able to get off the ground, right?
They could limit jumping with something like an FPS, an action bar kind of deal or Call of Duty's anti-bunny-hopping patch (you can't jump again right after landing). Is it actually worth bothering with and dealing with the inevitable complaints about being jumping limited? I kind of doubt it. That is probably why you don't see it.
What I don't get are those kind of people who will declare jihad on the developers of any game that doesn't have jumping. Did these people never ever play games like final fantasy, phantasy star, breath of fire, secret of mana, chrono trigger, and star ocean *just* because they didn't have a jump?
There are a lot of people who quit ryzom because they had no jump in there. I just don't get it. Who cares. Next thing you'll have people quitting because they can't do the macarena emote.
About the whole realism thing, I feel that mmo's without jumping are far more realistic than those with, simply because of the sheer height of the jumps in games and the fact that you can do them for 15 minutes straight while running uphill without getting fatigued.
Depends,as i don't play many games that jumping could even be considered an option(Eve)
Althought it does add abit of realism if it actually accomplishes anything.
Ya riding around in battle cruisers in space, and casting a bunch of magic spells at trolls is much more realistic than jumping a couple of feet with full armor?
Let me put it another way. I am willing to bet that they will have some device or way to let people jump 3 feet high with full armor before they have battlecruisers fighting in space. And obviously if you can cast magic spells at creatures its really not far to reason that the armor you are wearing is magic also, making it lighter? Just a thought.

I'm 38 and I still have a dirty mind. It doesn't diminish with age buddy...unless there's something wrong with you, of course.
Asheron's Call 1 has useful jumping and it is a skill, though one that everyone gets a basic form of automatically as I remember. Still - you have to spend exp points on it if you want it to improve.
I recall a couple of quest dungeons in AC1 where jumping was important, having to jump over fire pits or up to ledges and such. And if you were bad at it, you'd better have somebody with Creature Magic along to buff you (all skills/attributes could be buffed or debuffed in AC by various forms of Magic respectively). Ranged attacks, at least, in AC1 are also delivered to points in space. So jumping is somewhat important in PvP (there are ways to counter jumping like high speed but weaker magic bolts, etc).
All in all, a bit of extra fun. I voted yes.
jumping is cool , when i played wow and coh , one of my main ocupations was jumping of cliffs and building in coh.
i tryed to get my flying skills in coh , thats about all i did in my 14 day trial.
most mmos are made for virtual turims. who cares about pvp ? who cares about anything ? all we want is to fly , sit on top of that big mountain and enjoy the view.
jumpimg = cool
flying = awsomeness

Guild wars was, in my opinion a very well crafted game otherwise.
In World of warcraft there are many instances (in instances) where you need to jump over a chasm or canyon to proceed in the dungeon/cave.
Then there is City of Heroes... SUPER JUMP!
yes guildwars is not a feel free jumping in the air kind of game. you have CoH for that , its perfect , fly !!
guildwars is about combining skills/professions , jumping is not needed.
and there are other games that have jumping much better then any mmo
games like " winter games " with free style sky jump.
