Gamespot has posted a first look at Saga of Ryzom. It's a relatively short article but contains some interesting tidbits. One of the bits at the end of the article caught my attention:
"Shadow of Ryzom is currently in closed beta, but Nevrax plans to hold an open beta in early April. Plans are to launch the game in June, with simultaneous launches in the US, Britain, France, and Germany. The company will establish US-based servers to improve performance for American gamers. "

With both Nevrax and the Themis Group currently attending GDC I would imagine those who won a Beta spot, in this sites recently held contest, may not be testing until the Open Beta. This is just supposition on my part, however GDC ends today and next week is the end of March. If the Open Beta time frame in the article is correct then it would seem to follow the sudden surge in recent contests put forth by the Themis Group was to accrue testers for this upcoming phase.
Edited March 28/ 3:17pm to add the following Info/Link:
A few GDC Impressions by Johm Callaham over at HomeLan Fed. Once again the mention of the April Open Beta and June/2004 release. I would surmise this Beta/Release information is likely being provided by Nevrax or Themis themselves.

Interesting excerpt from the article:
"Perhaps the biggest change in this game from other MMORPG is the ability for players to get together in massive armies to fight large groups of powerful enemy creatures. According to the developer, there could be 250 players teaming up to defeat 100 large monsters in the game, and that's certainly something to look forward to."
Hmm they seem to forgetting Horizons, already released, has the same feature implemented. Of course Horizons has severe problems with the implementation, namely horrendus lag for even a group 1/10th that size, as anyone who has attempted to participate in one of the large scale invasions/events can vouch for.

Maybe I'm missing something here but I though an "open beta" was open to anyone who applied for it. (That's how it's been for all the open betas I've participated in) If that's the case what use was the contest for 500 beta accounts?
It almost seems that plans changed between the beginning of the contest and shortly after the contest.
Ubbax, you the man! if I weren't so lazy, I would have found that post and reposted it

Well I guess the big banner advertising open beta on the website kills that theory.
I haven't found a big banner on www.ryzom.com mentioning the open beta starting in April. As a matter of fact I can't find anywhere on the ryzom site that mentions an "open" beta. I would have thought it would be mentioned in their news at least.
This is all I've found in Ryzom news:
March 26, 2004 : Much attention is given to the new creatures to come in the Saga of Ryzom. Take a closer look at the Cuttler .
March 25, 2004 : Download without further delay the updated SoR Icons Pack . Jena has been iconized!
March 24, 2004 : Hundreds of creatures will enrich the magic world of the living planet Check out this week's creature close-up, the boggle-eyed Bolobi .
March 23, 2004 : Nevrax at GDC! The latest Beta of Saga of Ryzom will be on display at the nVidia pavilion as well as at Nevrax's booth (#1537) at the Game Developers
Conference in San Jose , CA , Wed 24 March - Fri 26 March. David Cohen from Nevrax will be on hand to talk about the game, as will our US partners from the Themis Group!
March 22, 2004 : Look out for the new ingame screenshot . A Fyros woman is holding the attention of a group of Zoraïs!
March 19, 2004 : New look, easier navigation, quicker access, deeper content... Check out the website on a regular basis! Try out the new wallpaper builder.

The point of my post of Ryzom's news page was that there is no mention of a open beta. The only place I've seen it is on a few gaming sites. Besides MMORPG.com, all of these sites still list Ryzoms release date as the end of April. Until I actually see an announcement on Ryzom's website or receive and email announcing an open beta I'm still going to chalk this up under "rumor" for right now.

Actually there are "restricted" Open Betas. The term is sometimes used to denote a beta progressing into a stress testing or load balancing phase. Such a phase could still have a limit regarding number of players allowed since it's best load is generally increased slowly over time. While the terminology may seem contradictory the Saga of Ryzom "Open Beta" may in fact be such a phase.
The information concerning the Ryzom "Open Beta" was available throughout GDC. The Gamespot article was available since March 24/2004. I waited till the last day of GDC to post my link. Since I was unable to attend myself this year, though friends were, I posed the title of my post as a question not an affirmation since I was hoping for confirmation. It was interesting to note though, the following day banners advertising the Ryzom "Open Beta" begin appearing on various gaming sites around the web

Thanks for clearing that up for me. All the open betas I've been in have seemed to be open for all. Maybe that just because I got in at the right time.
I think I'll still wait on Ryzom. Beta testing Neocron was something like this at times. Get logged on...wait...wait...wait... You're on!! "We're taking the servers down in 5 minutes for unexpected maintenance." Well damn.
This stinks
I won a position in the beta...still have yet to get into it....so I figure at this point I will just wait for open beta and now it really isn't a true open beta. BLAH
Worse part is the game has some really interesting ideas being implemented but there is no way I will be able to sway my friends away from WoW or CoH without being able to really play this game...which unfortunately means I may never see it
Beta'd: Neocron, Planetside, ShadowBane, Horizons, City of Heros, Saga of Ryzom, Lineage II, WoW Stress Test
Played: EQ, Shadowbane, DAoC, SWG, Anarchy Online, Asherson's Call 2. Earth and Beyond, City of Heros, EQ
Playing: WAITING FOR WOW and EQ 2
It's official :
"April 1, 2004 : Beta 2.4 is about to end and Beta 3, aka Open Beta, will begin very soon... More informations to come, seriously !!!"
www.ryzom.com
They would have named beta 3 "open beta" if it wasn't really open...
Can't wait for it to happen, but its april and theres nothing about the open beta on the site?

Yeah, but what it REALLY means is that it is opening to a significantly larger number of players than previously. Less than half of "open beta" tests are 100% everybody.

The game is still in closed beta at this time. As far as the open beta, nobody knows except the devs.

I guess I could have been wrong, yesterday they sent everyone in the closed beta an email about Beta 3. Basically it told us that the next phase will be soon and gave us the download link so we could have it on our computer when the next phase starts. Good news is that it is 3 times the size of the old one and they said on the forums that all of the graphics are now there. Heres hoping that they have all the races and music implemented.
