Why is my electric bill so high?

Bought a computer 3 months ago. Use it every day. It seems that the electric bill has gone up within the last few months. Anybody know if using the computer every day will jack up energy use? I heard that the computer supposedly uses up less energy than the TV. Can anyone provide some comments in regards to this?

If you have spent these 3 months doing nothing but playing graphic intensive games, then yeah... you're bill probly went up alot.

When your computer is idle and the screen is off..... you don't use much. Even when your screen is on and your computer is Idle you don't use much. Each thing you do takes more power to run from the processor/ram/HD movig/CDRom/Graphix Card (uses the most)

Another thing to look at is if the Power Save option is on.  You can check that under your monitor settings.  If it is off, your computer will burn up electricity, even when it's idle. Also, contrary to popular belief, your monitor burns up more energy than you computer ever will.

Not if it's Green Star and not if power saving features are on.  Or damn...to make it burn even less, press the button to turn it off.  Come on no one can be that lazy!

500 watt power supply is like the potential of five 100watt light bulbs. Figure the half a kilowatt X # hrs on = the KW/hr rate expense your system is causing ( not adding in the current draw from the monitor.) But for background programs like the seti workunits that run when one is not utilizing cpu cycles use considerably less power, if you run it in black screen. Figure just the current draw from the cpu and fans likely 50 to 75 watts ( one light bulb wattage.)
Electricity cost about $0.08 per kwh. Though ele bills often can have various scam taxes surcharged by local city and county gov'ts to pad their tax reserves. These tax surcharges can often add 10 to 30 % more to the bill.

    One easy answer:

Look to the gas prices. When gas goes up electricity goes up. Along with water and cable bills. Also it's getting warmer weather and more people are using power. So the power company charges more.
