Graphics Cards!

rathmarathma Member UncommonPosts: 3,786

I'm thinking of buying a new graphics card. Right now i have the radeon 9200. The ATI's are great, but the 9200 is already getting outdated. I'm trying to find a good graphics card, without spending 500 dollars.

Right now i'm between 2 graphics cards. The radeon 9600 and the radeon 9800. I will probably end up getting the radeon 9800 because it's only 30 dollars more than the 9600.

Anyways, if i bought the 9800 (not pro or XT, just original) how long do you figure it would last me running smooth games. Can it compete with EQ2?

Adding to that, i want to know if there is any problems in taking my radeon 9200 out, and putting in my 9800 (uninstalling the old driver and installing the 9800 software of course). I have heard some problems with people putting in a 9800.

My system specs are p4 2.4ghz and 512 mb. (I know i should go for 1GB but my pockets are a little empty at the moment)

If anyone can answer one of the several questions i have that would be great.

The 9800 is a good choice.  I personally prefer the 9600XT, but if you can get the 9800 for 30 bucks more, go for it.  Not sure on the incompatabilities involved in upgrading between the two, however.  Sorryimage

The ATI Radeon 9800 is the absolute only choice to go for those hi-end games like EQ.

But I always liked my ATI Radeon 9200, but i suppose its to each his own then?

Just remember to get alot of MB on the card. Otherwise its a waste of money.

I have been keeping a close eye on this one...

     ATI Radeon 9800SE AGP 8X 128MB DDR Video Card w/Dual DVI TV-Out

     Price: 132.99 U.S.

If you know any better deals on radeon 9800's it would be greatly appreciated if you posted here image

Woops! scratch that. I just noticed it said SE on there. I like to stay away from those. If anyone can find a radeon 9800 thats not SE at a low price that would be awesome.

Since we're talking Graphics Cards, if you plan on upgrading to a ATI 9800 in the near future, you're going to need to upgrade your system with a good power supply.  The new Cards coming out need a heck of lot of energy, since they are coming out with processors on the cards themselves.  Check the back of the box prior to buying the card; it will tell you the power requirements there.

As for looking into cards, ATI 9800 series pretty much set the mark for graphics cards.  This is forcing nVidia to finally step up to the plate and become more competitive.  This is good for us (the consumers), as this becomes a win-win situation for us.  Without innovation, technology stagnates and withers.

Powersupply question:it says max power 400wats, but don't exceed 380, and theres a few other things on there. But will that be ok for a ATI 9800 pro?

geforce fx 5200 256 mem, It's what I have and the current games I play make me compete with almost anyone out there, sure its not a 5950 ultra or a 9800 xt, but games at the moment don't require stuff so high, and it was pretty cheap to. But a 9800 regular would do you fine for a good time, just get 1 gb of ram, and a good processor. I'm currently at 640 mb of ram, RD (yeah im oldschool) and 1.4 ghz processor, its pretty bad, but it runs fine on games like planetside, anarchy online, risk your life, (lol), etc and all that crap. So any 5000+ or 9600+ should do ya fine.

The Xt 9800 is the best look at it at newegg.com or pricegrabber.com, its probaly cheaper than 500 dollars. But I'm going to wait for the pci express cards, their going to be up to 30 percent faster.

Hey MutyBijani, in that pict you have of your computer is the case a Raidmax scrpio 868? If so, how is working for you?

Talking about power requirements for graphics cards, I have just had to update my PSU from a 450W to a 600W unit in order to power an FX5950Ultra. I know they draw a lot of power but I would have thought a 450W supply would have been able to cope.

The aditional expense of the PSU ment I had to pay close to retail price for the card upgrade, I work for a hardware supplier image
