Ask Kalum a RP Question

Hello all, I have been a Roleplayer for over a decade now and love teaching others what I have learned during my RP career. I have roleplayed in several different MMOs and I began by doing pen and paper roleplaying before MMOs existed. Feel free to ask me any question about RP that pops into your head and I will do my best to answer it myself or find the answer for you...Roleplaying makes everyone's gaming experience better by incorporating your own character in the MMO you are in, and sharing it with others who are doing the same thing.

Ask away!

Well, this is a hard question to answer because I dont know your own preferences, as far as, whether your into fantasy games, sci-fi games etc.

I will tell you that MxO has been my favorite MMORPG to date, even though it doesnt get much respect from critics or gamers in general.  To be honest, I will admit that MxO has been riddled with bugs, ownership changes and various other misfortunes.  The roleplaying community is good though...the roleplayers on MxO has more than made up for the lack of content, and the bad elements I just mentioned.  So the best advice I could give you (from a roleplaying perspective) is to find a community that is friendly and the players have similar interests...a place where you feel like you belong.

Oh yes...I will be playing LOTRO myself, so I hope to see you there!  Though I wont be under the name "Kalum", I will be using my real MMO identity.

    Hi Kalum,

First I want you to know that this thread is a really great idea!
I´m playing pen&paper since I was 15 and now I´m searching for a real good MMORPG with a lot of role playing elements. 2 Years ago I played DAoC and it was ok. Do you know how gameplay, community and role playing evolved until now? Or is it worse now?

Can you tell me some MMO´s with good role playing?
I prefer middle ages, PvE+PvP, good crafting systems (not as important as the rest) and a active community.

    And by the way:
I can help with role playing questions, too. But I don´t know any real good role playing MMO.

    thx
    'Chazer

I dont have much more information concerning this type of questioning.  I feel like MMO Roleplaying is in its infancy along with MMOs in general....so no, there isn't one out there yet that is as RP oriented as you might be imagining.

If any other experienced RPers read anything on this thread, and think I have forgotten something or have something to add...feel free to do so! Just dont let the thread become swamped with RP arguments. This thread is about finding answers to questions...not debate.

Yeah, I just started a topic not knowing exactly what MMORPG meant. (that tells you how much of a gamer I am)  I've been playing Diablo LOD for about 2 years and i'm just about bored.  Can you suggest a game?  I know it's kinda like picking out shoes for someone, but i'm looking for something that I can play with some of the guys at work that is somewhat challenging, but not so complex that an oldtimer can catch on.  If you can think of anything, let me know.

    Thanks,

    Perry

Key Kalum, i was wondering if you could help me out...

The games ive played within the last like 3 years have mainly just been runescape and kal online.. I really like gamse with mainly just wizards, archers and knights which are set as if they are in the past. As in with the normal swords and bows etc. not with light sabers or anything.

But, as with all games kal online is starting to get slightly boring and I would like to try to find another game. Im looking for a 3D one that is FREE with no charges at all. I dont mind downloading a client to play it (as with kal). I would like it if the game envolved PvP and teamwork but also solo of course. Something with levels, skills, stats etc. I hope this is clear enough for you, just reply if you need to know anything else to help!

    Thanks for helping, Quany

EDIT: Sorry, i forgot to add that i would prefer the game to be quite new. Nothing annoys me more then playing a game for years and still being the slowest becuase its been out AGES. Cheers.

       Hello, Kalum.

My question if about pen and paper RPGs, so I think it might be a little easier, considering you said you've been playing them for so long. Then again, the amount of time you've been playing them might actually work against you... *shrug* Anyway, what do you suggest to someone living in a small town that's looking to get into pen and paper RPGs? I don't know anyone who plays, and there isn't a local game shop anymore, so those two options are out the window, unfortunately... Anyway, I don't know anyone that would even be interested in pen and paper RPGs, and, actually, if you totalled my friends, it'd still be, like too small for a good RP experience, I think... Anyway, yeah...

       Thanks!

    Hey Kalum,

Roleplaying is what got me into mmo's, and I've always been a leader figures in games leading guilds and such. But my recent guild was a failure. Any tips on how to get a succesful roleplaying guild going when the community hardly roleplays?

    Thanks,

    Shaman64

((oh and Mxo has great roleplaying like you said really good roleplaying))

Dont know what to tell you my friend.  I would suggest hanging out at a local gaming store and see who you can find...talk to the manager, employess, customers and get them into RPing! ::smiles::

Well if the community hardly RPs then about the only thing you can do is make a thread asking who RPs and try to gather up the one or two that do and make some interesting stories or events together...perhaps if you create a good ingame event, in a well populated area, you might turn others on to RPing.

I've played a few RPG's, and now I'm kinda lost browsing through sites and sites of games looking for a good one. I guess you can say I'm kinda spoiled RP-wise, 'cuz I played SWG preCU and loved all the RP'ing that went on there. Needless to say, I left soon after the NGE (I was kinda hoping it'd be good so I wouldn't have to switch games). After that I went to CoH/V, and experienced a bit of RP'ing there, but the lack of overall content and young kids trying to cyber at Pocket D (pretty much one of 2 good RP locations) just got me turned off. After that I moved to GW, a good game with a nice story, just too much instancing, and not enough RP to keep me for long. Now, I'm just looking for a good game with friendly RP'ers, enough content to keep me held for more than a month, and something that's just not every other game in a new skin. Right now I'm leaning towards EVE or MxO, MxO mostly 'cuz from what I've seen it looks like what I want, but I've heard some bad reviews, and I'm hesitant about playing another SOE game (but with all the ownership changes, maybe they don't even have it anymore) after what they did with SWG. Lemme know if any of you have some good input/suggestions for me. Thanks in advance.

Je mettrai l'amour sur dos de moi.

MxO has been one of my fave RP games to date...a good community (mainly because its small enough where everyone really gets to know one another).  I would also recommend LOTRO when it launches, from what I have seen it has a more mature community of RPers there and who could go wrong with RPing in Middle Earth??  But if you are looking for instance gratification MxO is the way to go, in my opinion.

    Yarr.

I'd like to ask, what is your opinion on in character relationships in MMOs? I've had one and it was rather rewarding.

I’m a standard pattern infantryman, you’re a standard pattern no-neck, and any second now my standard pattern fist is going to send your nose bone back into your very sub-standard pattern brain!” – Sergeant Ceglan Varl
