why do you need that if all you want is virtual turism , fly around , fishing , etc
SWG pre CU was full of bugs and people loved it anyway

It looks good when on paper. Dark and Light gave many gamers everything they've hoped for, but a sluggish battle systems and tons of bugs killed it. They bit off more then they can chew, if only a bigger company would buy them out and revamp the battle system.

Sounds interesting, might try it since its free up to level 10.

Can someone explain the subscription options the master, freedom and game credits crap ? WTF

Please, for the love of nature, do not touch Dark and Light. Ever. It ranks up there with Mourning, which is a rotten piece of garbage.

Greatness, Neoteo, all who are curious. I followed the game for a half year before its release. It was indeed the most promising game on the horizon, and when the SoG open beta was made available to the public, I was one of the 10,000 who, within the space of the first 60 seconds, recieved a key.

    And then the uglyness began...

7 frames per second on my 2.6 Ghz gaming rig, no quests, no NPCs, clusters of mobs in the middle of this wasteland, broken animations, no attack animations, nonsensical skill system with icons written in broken english, almost useless user interface...

Oh... and I only learned all this by persisting through crashes every 5 minutes for the first three days.

As it happens, this was one month before release. And when I saw what they had at that point, I disabused myself of every notion I had that D&L had a future. I don't know what happened, but it wasn't remotely ready by the (repeatedly pushed back) release date. There was virtually no communication from the developers over all this time either.

The worst part is that rather than groan and move on, people actually pre-ordered this game and clung to the hope that the other 95% of the game would be made ready in a month or two. By this time I was barely paying attention, but I also caught some rumors about refunds being impossible on the way out. Ouch. Though at least it taught a lesson to many people about the dangers of self-delusion.

Anyways, it's been about a year since then, the game has long since been released, and rather than cancel the project and make a big apology for actively decieving their community for so long, NPcube actually kept their "world" afloat and started releasing patches in the hope of recovering some paltry subscription money, I suppose.

By now though, I'm sure the game is vastly improved over what I saw a few months before release. If it hasn't been taken offline completely yet, it may well be 15% complete!

I heard that a similar disaster happened before D&L called Age of Mourning, and read up on it. Ogg, seems D&L was only the second worst big MMO launch in history. For those unfamiliar with it all, read up on both games. They illustrate how even after all these years, the MMO industry is still in an embryonic stage, with few real accomplishments to boast of, WoW's success notwithstanding.

The only upcoming game that looks to be worth looking at today, to me, is Darkfall. And it may bomb too. The rest of the upcoming games look like clones.

Much like the last poster I too followed but participated in the Pioneer offer of DNL. From unable to log in for weeks, to finally getting in, crashing within 5 mins but not before the level 1 mobs aggroed all who managed log in and proceed to whoop arse on the brand new toon and when trying to log back in after the crash, being told I was already logged in and welp, to the time I finally gave up I was still "Already Logged In". The scenario went on for thousands that had purchased the pioneer offer.

Farlan let a press release go out stating that the release was smooth as silk and many happy players are now playing the game. It was later revealed that DNL deliberately allowed only 100 players to play on the release day. So the thousands that had problems from day one up to and including months afterward, not to mention the billing screw ups of ppl being charged 2x, 3x for the game. Little by little they allowed for more to be able to log in. However this did not come without explanation from Farlan. According to Farlan, there was a hack attack so the servers were closed for quite some time on top of not being able to log in and the crashing when ya were able. Then more "excuses" came, right on the heels of more and more ppl complaining and the truth of the actual state of the game realized by the thousands who paid for it.

Farlan posted information on the website regarding the state of the game. They said in loyalty to their own loyal and extremely tired fans, they will be releasing the game at about 90% completion. Yay! Right?

Wrong. The game was in fact about 10% complete. Server problems were the main problem with downtime of about 90%. Actual movement and being able to use the goodies of transp in such a big world were in fact broken in just about every aspect. Armor falling apart after one fight with mobs -- if you were able to stay alive as you see, level 1 mobs could ravage your level 5 toon yet your level 5 toon could kill a level 30 mob, that is of course, if the level 1 mob didnt aggro you from 5 miles away.

Farlan continued to issue misleading press information. In most of what they said, it was flat out lying on Farlans part. This continued for many months. After the fiasco in which they stated that the release of SOG was in fact not DNL at all so dont worry folks all is well . they also said we are not going to give you a refund on the DNL game , even though it had not been officially released yet. Heck broke loose on the forums, Farlan fairly quickly realized their "mistake" and said okay we will let you refund for the next two weeks. The game had still not been delivered mind you.  At this point the cry for refunds was so loud and so thoroughly awash in DNLs billing that within just a couple weeks, from about 8000 "lucky" pioneers, according to the third party billing company, over 5000 had asked for refunds.

Now using Farlans own words that the prelude was not DNL but a gift to the loyal fans --- they finally released DNL. And guess what? It was the prelude only with a couple more broken things added in.

Same scenario all over again. Constant and enduring server downtime, no quests, broken NPCs , broken mobs, broken transpo, broken servers, broken armor , broken weapons, the list continues. Patches were released that in fact crashed the servers, broke new stuff, did NOT fix what it was intended to do and generally displayed more incompetence and farfetched lip service from Farlan.

This all came to a head when the head of Farlan/Np3 stated in a public arena that the games condition is a result of the fans constant (now remember this game had an original release date at least for 3 years prior to the actual release) request to release. So it was the fans fault after 7 years in production that the game was released in such horrid and unplayable condition.

Since that time several more misleading and thoroughly false press releases have been made by Farlan and Np3.  The game still experiences the same issues. A top end puter is needed to be able to spend any amount of qualified time playing the game. The dreaded "Already Logged In" (ALI it is so lovingly called by many) is still alive and well and waiting for its next victim. Game events are complete jokes in that there are perhaps 8 players in the gameworld event. And yes with as many as 8 ppl around you, a crash is almost guaranteed. Some quests have been added altho those are, can and will break at any given time, especially after a patch. The UI is still quite an unfriendly monster and well, a big beautiful world in which you can see for miles (a technology that is in contention as to the true ownership) really is kewl but dont try to fight, or fly, or craft, or ski, or cast a spell, or heal or do much  other than send bug reports to a non existing dept somwhere out in cyberspace and pay your money.

Oh yeah and as far as the "Play for "free"? Sure its free, AFTER you pay them $29.99 and $9.99 monthly. (btw, some of the old players who cancelled months and months ago were recently recharged for the game and billed for months worth of playing)

So yeh, why not give it a try?

You are a fool if you do.  The developers will do anything for money.  They fraudently charged hundreds of people subscription prices MONTHS after they canceled.  The graphics are horrible and you will feel like you are the only survivor in a post-apoclyptic world.  No one is left in game.  The fact they are having to offer free play a couple of months after release should tell you something.

Trust me---I was there.  It would be less pain if you let me kick you in the balls for free.  The pain will go away quicker.

Once that company gets ANY details about you they screw you to the wall.  Just read the OFFICIAL game forums for the past few months.

umm,..let me direct your attention to this:

    from the official forums:

Conditions and Game Access Plan Selection Buy your Dark and Light Activation Key: I acknowledge that I will be charged a one time activation key fee of $29.99

This message appears when you try to activate the "free" mode.

    Food for thought.

Yah but that is said nowhere officially, only mentioned within a thread in the forums as with any kind of support-problem & billing problem...

I see Alchemic Dreams still doesnt mind getting payed for their services with ill-gotten money ,so beware of games that have them as any kind of support/involvement.

Activation Code is for buying the game after you get the Free Version and want to upgrade I think.

    Okay experience so far:

    Downloading. easy.

Going to character selection screen after patching and logging in. HARD. I got disconnected/error like 5 times...

Finally somehow managing to get past that, I logged in and there my character was, looking pretty cool... BAM. Disconnected again... So I will try maybe later today.

Am I the only one getting disconnected?

Well I'll agree with everyone here, we aleady know that DnL promised SO much and have given a underpar game so far, on 'release' the server was still very unstable and not even half the content promised was active (thats if the disconnects every 5 mins didn't put you off to discover it) and from whats happened with the 'billing' and 'subtext' issues it doesn't put them in good light.. If you want to try it do so, but if the 'free trail' asks from your card details, warning lights will start flashing, nothing is 'free' when it requires a credit card..

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

...that is the beginning of the large piece of crap we were all warning you about.

I was in the Closed beta of this game, so I know what I'm talking about here. This is the worst company, ever.

Last month they charged  hundreds of people who haven't played the game in a year!

I haven't played the game in 10 months, and last month, they put a $69.99 charge on my credit card.

if you don't want to be robbed,  stay away from this game!

Well considering the intense amount of disconnections, I am afraid to log back in so I went offline. Although it lags a bit (probably my computer's fault), it was fun just exploring around with my dragon . That was the only thing I did so far and then after that I quit, I will try again tomorrow. So +1 for exploration in DnL, -2 for disconnections .  Maybe the disconnections are cause of my computer?

Didn't I read from the D&L forums here that the pictures the game had in their screenshots section was all brushed up and photoshopped? I'm sure other games do that (i really dont know, nor do i care), but in my opinion that is pathetic. This game reeks of death. And from one someone has already said..i'll say it for giggles:

    I wouldn't even wish this game on a sado-masochist.
