Is the mmo dry season never going to end ?

RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599
It is no secret 2006 was one of the worst for mmo players.

I spent basically the whole year trying diferent half assed shots at mmo genre , with no luck.

What is to say more about a genre with so much potential  in which WoW is its brightest jewel.

I belived that 2007 will end this - Vanguard is comming ....

But then i noticed all this bad rep coming from NDA breachers. Now , you will say -dont belive that!

But we all know better.

Every single game that had bad rep in beta turned out to stink just as well in release.

Here are some bad comments

I really hope this are all lies.

But i can tell you one thing. I am not preordering

Vanguard isn't "bad" during beta right now. It's just not nearly fisnished and needs a little more aim. It's great for the point it is at right now, but not ready to be published. When it's ready it will we awesome. I like to describe it as the original SWG+EQ2+Diablo 2= WIN!

Your right its not "bad".  But its definitely not good.  Right now its average or below average at best.  Login works well.  Lag is terrible but to be expected.  Awful fps on even the very best systems is a bad sign.   Over 20gigs a of lackluster environments.  Nothing new combat wise.

Does it have potential? I still say it does, but the door is closing fast.  If you think this is the next big thing in MMOs, then you might want to start looking elsewhere.

Part of the Vanguard buzz is that it will be the first "A list" MMORPG to release in quite a while. Hopefully they will be able to capitalize on this position in the MMORPG market.

People are also looking forward to Conan, and Warhammer, but those are much farther down the road.

Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I'm so interested in Vanguard is that it is scheduled to release soon. Otherwise I'd be looking at Warhammer, especially since it's geared towards PvP, and Vanguard is not.

If you read the comments from the link, a lot of the problems are already being addressed in beta 4. Some of it seems like players that don't realize they were in beta 3 instead of beta 5.

I fully agree with the above statement. And the reason for the lag is because until it has gone GOLD the game won't be on Sony Stations high speed godly servers. Right now there on there crappy servers.

I agree with Rattrap, that every MMO I've seen slammed in Beta has pretty much sucked when it was released. Shadowbane, Horizons (beta tested this one myself), DnL, DDO, stop me now, I'm crying already. Hell, look to your left, if any of those released games had bad beta testimonials, you can pretty much say the game sucks now.

WoW and EVE held me through the greater part of 2006. I just went back and tried EQ2 again and have found it to be a damn fine game now. Too bad it took SOE 3 or 4 tries to get it right, but they seem to have found their groove with this one. EQ2 should keep me in MMO land until WAR/Vanguard/Conan release. Maybe even Darkfall will release in 2007 and maybe it will be good. Keeping my fingers triple crossed on that.

Yea i would keep your eq2 account active while trying vanguard when it comes out just a suggestion.

You people do realize that these comments are from May 2006, and that the game has been substantionly improved since then especially in the recent transiton from beta 3 to 4. These comments are obsolete and also are unreliable at best. There have already been plenty of  claimed "beta testers" that have said the game is terrible, and have been proven to be lying. Don't worry about what other people say and do the research yourself. Knowing the FAQ helps alot when trying to determine wether someone is lying or not , so don't let these people fool you. I also don't understand what your logic about bad beta reviews = bad game, I remember  when WoW was getting terrible reviews back in beta and now look at it. I'm just saying that you should really wait for the finalized product before you make a judgement.

If people say that enviroments look bland , or that combat system is bad .... etc

This is the core game - not something that can be repaired  during beta testing.

    Just to remind you.

Beta testing is done on allready finished product , to find bugs and polish minor problems.

    But , we will see.

I so hope Vanguard will be awsome. But i think i will start playing EQ2 anyway, and wait for vsoh to start proper

Nothing could be further from the truth.  They have redone parts of combat, classes, and WHOLE AREAS in just the past couple of months/beta phases.  This game has been in beta for about a year and a half almost, you can't possibly think that they've had the game done for this long!

Just to remind YOU. Beta testing is to find bugs in the game but to also provide feedback on a game that is not yet finished.  This feedback is then used to make the game better via improvements/changes.

You've never been in a beta then... The last phase of beta sure that might be the case, but the previous 4 phases of VG beta have been anything but testing the final product... Get a clue.

Vanguard is not a perfect game, but at launch it will be the best MMO out. Like SWG, it will have it's issues I'm sure (as all ambitous games do), but it will be worth playing even with those.

IF, and that's a big IF, AoC can be pulled off, it will take MMO's beyond anything even seen before. Heck, it may be the game to destroy WoW.

There are also many games that may come close to launch this year...

Considering both VSoH & AoC are slated to be released this year, this year will be a good one for MMO gamers.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

I am looking forward to the upcoming releases in 2007. I think the mmorpg market is gonna take a strong uphill swing. Especially when alot of those WoW crowd start to look at the new games coming out.

I hope this is sarcasm, I truley do. I let all of my subscriptions from this year run out and have been spending my game budget on DS games (hence my playing of GWs lately, bught it at release still not done with the original campaign but at least it is already paid for).

My bet is Christmas 07 or early 08 for a few of the games which are currently in round one closed betas and such.

Haha, I dunno, I feel like I am going to starve to at least WAR and prolly further ahead in time.

As to peoples arguing about BETA, to me Vanguard just entered beta this week or last week, it was alpha been called beta prior that, but eh, feel free to follow the lead of the mighty Brad!  Haha.

Raiding is old gen, and if Brad can't understand that, he is going to remain...old gen.

Rattrap whether you remember it or not we have bumped into one another before in various threads. And as such i have the utmost respect for my fellow dedicated mmorpger.

And as a result when i say >>>>>>>>>>> DONT BUY THIS GARBAGE <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

i say so without alterior motives nor lying of any sort.

i was and i still am (barring Sigil finding out about this breach) a beta tester and hvae been for some months. I have tested this game for sometime and have been active quite alot (due to my recent departure from EvE)

This mmorpg can best be described in one phase "more of the same"

basically envision EQ2 just with less loading screens, aside from that the performance is horrible (1900xt, 2048 DDR2 ram, 3.2Ghz P4, 8mb cable connection)

despite the beta server being populated with 300-400 and @ peak 800 (saturday night) horrendous lag jumping from 200-400+ms ping and even @ 200~ ping you can certainly notice the lag with regards to the gameplay experience.

from what i can tell the application suffers from serious memory leaks , FPS spikes , stuttering and even with the recommended tweaks found on the beta server , a reduction to 800x600 and lowest setts i get a measly 30-35fps
    this is with a mid-range 1900xt.

with that said i can go on and explain in detail the various gameplay flaws, not of opinion but of design despite being late in the closed beta process this game is exceedingly lacking.

i haven't seen such backwardness since DnL and i think we all know how that went.

granted the devs arent from reunion island, but this game if it continues the course its headed now will fail miserably and rightfully so.

in summation to all the people who are on the fence aboutthis game look elsewhere for you own sakes, or you can come to realise the terrible truth i have. The choice is yours.

and btw i hope to cross your path again in the future rattrap image

Right now there are a couple MMO I am keeping my eye on.

Agreed on the OP that 2006 is a bad year for MMO's.

Hopefully this year we have at least 1 that can break the mold and give us MMO gamers soemthing to truely enjoy.

Sigal is shutting down the forums after they release vanguard so that should tell you something right there, if i was you i would forget vanguard and go buy eq2 and all expansions for 29.95 at amazon. And i am sure nubbins is right on everything, except the gameplay being like eq2 the way it is now. I heard the gameplay of vanguard is more like eq1 than anything.

If it doesnt end with vanguard then it will end with Age of Conan most deffinetly

Anybody else noticed the so called beta leaks he linked was posted in May?

Also don't worry about the mmo dry season, 2007 there are quite a few bigger titles coming out.  Vanguard will lead the charge, then there will be AoC, Warhammer, and LOTR.  Good news for us mmo players is that there will be lots of choices, and for freaks like me who likes to play 2 mmo's at the same time may have to split my time and play 2 mmo's.  I don't know why people get so competitive when comparing new games coming out.  It's good that there will be a lot of choices out there.  More competition only drives the devs to make their games better.  Everybody's looking up at WoW's subscription numbers right now, but hopefully we will truly have some alternatives to play soon.  I hope future mmo developers don't try to model themselves after Blizzard too much or try to make WoW clones as much.  But business is business, they gotta do what they gotta do to feed their families.

Anyways, since money isn't an issue with me, I'll most likely try all the new mmo's coming out in 2007.  Which ones I stay subscribed will be decided a couple months after playing.  I'm not one to listen to beta leaks and use that to decide whether I play a game or not.  There were mmo's released in the past where I listened to some bad reviews and never tried them, but then after purchasing, I had a great time playing.

I am not saying , and i am not naysaying.

    But  : "Where there's Smoke there's Fire"

And working in software company , i can guarantee you that beta , no mather how long is done on more or less finished product.

Doing anything diferent would be insane. And who ever doesnt understand that , obviously knows nothing about programming.

Many things could be changed during beta. But the core game can only stay the same.

And for me beta leaks only speak directly opposite of what i expected form Vanguard.

    Good graphic = no

More hardware friendly than eq2 = no

Complex (and inteligent) combat system = no

Huge AND INTERESTING world = no

    Great character customisation = no

Leave that , and only thing VsoH holds for me is the fact it is comming out soon.

Which is not so exciting anymore. Since EQ2 EOF , turns out to probably be a better deal.

As for Vanguard. I really hope I am so very very wrong.

    But i am usually not

I don't know about the rest of those points but I think the graphics look fantastic.  You really need to see some of the latest screenshots from the game.
