Well xmas is here and new year is about.
I had high hopes for this year but i think this got to be the worst mmorpg year ever.
Yes we have had years such as 2000 where nothing much was released .But this year had to have the history of worst paid mmorpg ever .
Top candidates for worst mmorpg that you have to buy the software are certainly from this year in the form of dark and light and roma victor.
Big names like D&D online are one of the biggest letdowns of a licence ever. And auto assault which was sadly probably the best of the lot released last year was innovative but totally boring.
Well vangard seems to be first out of the starting lines this year so i certainly hope it brings back the fun into mmorpg.I will probably quit mmorpgs if this year turns out to be anything like last year.

live life, rock hard.
Heh, I'm with you too. I really hope Gods and Heroes will be good. I've always been interested in Roman stuff. Mythology is a passion of mine. If GnH isn't what I hoped for, then well, I guess I'll be stuck with Huxley. Or maybe not, Huxley seems like Halo/Call of duty, both free to play.
I don't know if MMORPG's are for me anymore. I'm not a fan of huge communities. People running around killing what you need to kill before you get to them. Then, when I try out a game that seems fun and has a smaller community, it has that small community basically because, well, it sucks.
You don't have to hope. It's coming.
The last 3 years have been interesting. The eastern market continued pumping out a never ending trail of pitiful MMOGs while the western market came to a stand still with the exception of WoW, which took the world by storm. Sure the rest were bombs, but there were only a few. The east has certainly proved that they insist on producing quantity over quality, while the west has much higher production values, hence the longer release dates. The next 2 years will be the western market's time to prove that they hold the key to quality productions.
To me, both Eastern and Westernized games seem the same. Hack and slash with two different styles of graphics. Thats basically what WoW is, grinding. CoX, grinding. All of the Eastern games are grinding, but with huge swords and wepons. I think the MMO business should concentrate on MMORPG's, not just MMO grind games. You know, A game that has actually more story-line and depth than fighting. That's what was cool about SWG, the story.
But, I can only dream for something like that.
Me too. GnH is my most anticipated MMO. Followed by WAR, and AoC.
Agreed, except the westernized games have always been way more polished and therefore, accessible.
I've always thought that the the masses have never had any sensible standards. With low standards, you can convince yourself that any game is fun. I have faith in companies like Bioware and Green Monster Games to completely revitalize the genre. For starters, they need to bring back the RPG to the MMO like you said, and continue from there.
high end gear, for the few the proud, and or game farmers I just do not see much difference in the coming year just yet.
However I do see some glimer of light with the new consoles and pc games.
I imgine more then just a few of us are mmorpgless at the moment and that does not seem to be changing any time soon.
I use to see the mods here talk about mmorpgs in there infancy as far as gaming experaince, however if no gaming company moves beyond the box and delivers then there is a good chance no matter what is released it will be what it is.
Level kill loot rinse repeat....of course LFG??????
I fall into the camp where I see little left to be done that has not been done before with MMORPGs. All that is left now is polish, polish, polish. However just a quick glance at the game list shows Warhammer, LoTRO, Age of Conan, and Vanguard coming out this year so ther is a lot of potential for something new, if only a different world in which to do the same old things .
PoBS has teh only potential for anything really different in my opinion, everhthing else is same old hack and slash fantasy. Not that I am saying that is entirely a bad thing.
I miss DAoC
I'd have to say that this year was not the worst year in MMOs. At least it was relatively scandal free, unlike 2005. The slowness in 2006 I believe is a direct reaction to the problems everywhere in 2005. Mainly, how to deal with WoW, and consolidation of the market. I suspect he reason 2006 was so slow is that 2005 was so bad. Whether 2007 will be equally slow remains to be seen, and I think its about even money on whether it will or not.
This year was slow though. Not too many games really improved much, and not too many have been released. It has been a year of regrouping, and though I'd have to say it was not a banner year for the genre, it didn't put us back nearly as much as 2005 did.

2006 saw me do something I hadn't done before... and that was return to games that I had quit previously. I returned to WoW and EvE after leaving both. I enjoyed WoW very much but I've just played it too much. Enjoyed many evenings with EvE as well but they moved my agents one weekend and the thought of moving my "opperations" to another system (again) wasn't very appealing. Then I found out that my lvl 3 and 4 agents were de-activated for 30 days forced me to take a break I never returned from.
So I wait (and wait). Been WOG (without game) since mid october (after quitting wow again). I'm at the point where I'll almost try anything. Vangaurd is high on my list. Conan... LOTR... and even the Ultima Online's new expansion has peaked my curiousity.
Been playing Battle for MIddle Earth II with a little bit Warhammer 40,000 to pass the time.
So yeah I agree...2006 was a crappy year (for mmorpgs).
Saddly, I have to no faith in 2007.
I am looking for 2008 or 2009, and that is FAR.
Let's hope I am wrong. Since 2003, only MMO I got that was fun, is CoH/CoV...let's just say I am starving; MMO-wise.

yeah i agree, im tired of fantasy mmo's with orcs, elves, and paladins etc. we need a tried and true scifi mmo that is successful, offers deep story lines, plots, poltiical strife between players (pvp ) which is encouraged. some new form of battle system that is both engaging and worth getting into as well as offers benefits to those involved.
WoW's BG sucks not really deep, and end game is nothing more than a EPIC gear fest. questing isnt really intriguing either although they do have alot of questing.I think we could use a skillpoint/skills based type of system (eve online did it very well)that offers flexibility in classes as well as what items you can use whether it be certain weapons or armor for your class. HOpefully late 2007/early 2008 will give us this. taba ralusa looks nice as well as Huxley.
but i am defnitely itching to play Star trek online and star gate worlds which should be interesting to say the least even with it being so early in their development, but Id say thats a good thing that they peak our interests so early cause makes you think of the possibilities of what is in store. well, here is hoping. :P
