Was Going To Buy This Game Until I Saw...

Yeah it only take 8 months to reach FFXI's skill caps! Why can't it be 30 years?::::05::

I like the skill caps. If there weren't any skill caps you'd have level 20 people getting sidewinder.

I recon they should all be caped apart from certain classes or class combos get the ability to advance a bit more in say a couple of particular areas.

Was that a thought I just had, or and echo of a thought I was thinking of having?

Yeah they should make it so you can advance further in ONE particular area of your choice or something like that.  No one like to be just like everyone else.

you do advance more in certain skills, than other jobs. I.E. a lvl 30 war's polearm skill is about 3-6 points lower than a lvl 30 dragoons polearm skill. Each job has something they are good with, and those skills will go higher than other jobs at the same lvl.

I was considering getting it but everyone I've talked to about it says it was way over-hyped and isn't all that good.

But, is it good? Is it bad? What makes it good and bad?
    Is PVP balanced?
    Are classes balanced?
    What makes it fun?
    What's it like? Comparisons?

In case you haven't noticed I'm very concerned with getting yet another Dud. There's no free trial for it so I doubt I'll ever get to try before I buy so I'm looking for folks who like it (and those who don't) to say why they do or don't.

Been burned one to many times by MMO's that everyone says "It's AWESOME" or "IT WILL BE AWESOME"

From now on if I can't try it first I doubt I'll be buying them unless I get solid evidence as to why it "sucks" or why it "Roxorz" :)

Well I'll do my best to tell you my experience with FFXI.  To start off, I recently quit FFXI (4 days ago).

Graphics:  To me FFXI games graphics are the best I've seen in a fantasy MMORPG.  The character models are very detailed.  The armor worn may not be the most varied as in appearence but the armor is very well detailed.  It doesn't look like a 2D graphic layered onto a 3D model.  Environment graphics are phenomenol also.   Just to much to talk about but when you see your first gorgeous sunset you'll swear you'll feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

Fighting:  Position in combat means nothing except to the thief job and to whomever they are trying to trick attack off of.  This does push FFXI's fighting system up a notch or two from other games for me.   I rate it 8 of 10 since most games are like this.

Macros/key binding:  FFXI provides the ability to make a six line macro and bind it to one of 200 spots on macro bars making things ALOT easier.  Casting becomes error free and fighters can rapidly switch out weapons to be able to remain flexible.  I rate this a 9 of 10.

PvP:  PvP is coming soon.  I have no clue at it but from what I've read it's a "simulated" contest.  Not sure what that means.  No rating.

Classes:  There doesn't seem to be any class that is far superior to another but the Summoner class needs to be given more power.  I never played it 99.9% of the summoners I knew/partied with played their character like a white mage.  In my mind, that makes playing the summoner pointless until you can get the summons which you need to be lvl 60+ in order to even get.  I rate this a 9 of 10 (1 point off for the gimpness of the summoner class)

Soloing:  Only a viable option for characters level 1-10.  After that, you will need to party in order to get experience at a worthwhile rate.  This was a big turnoff for me but I rolled with the punches and started playing a white mage, since they are always in demand.  There is one job that can solo at pretty much any level and that is the Beastmaster who can charm one creature to fight against another.  But you need to get to lvl 30 with a basic job first.  I rate this a 2 of 10.

Grouping:  As I said above, FFXI was designed to be a group based game.  I knew this when I bought the game but had no idea that soloing was not even an option after a certain point.  My mistake.  Grouping in FFXI is what made me quit the game for good.  As a lvl 36 White mage of great reputation, I was unable to get into or form a group in the 3 zones that were condusive for lvling for lvl 36 characters and up.  After two weeks of only getting into one party I gave up.  I can't justify wasting 3 hours of my time every day merely attempting to get into an xp party.  Also, don't think this is an isolated incident.  Read the forums on Allakhazam to get a better feel of the scale of the is problem.  I rate this a 8 of 10 before lvl 35 and a 1 of 10 after lvl 35.

Crafting:  A money and time sink.  The crafting system in FFXI is "substandard" IMHO.  As you get higher in skills, the items crafting should be better, worth more and in higher demand.  Taking cooking for example, I lvled cooking to 82 but only items that required a lvl 40 skill made me a profit and not much at that.  I rate this a 4 of 10.  A 10 would be Star War Galaxies.

Money: The currency, gil, is by far not easy to come by.  The majority of players are pretty poor.  Of the 50 some friends I played with regularly all but 2 were poor.  The 2 that weren't poor has spent hours and hours camping notorious monsters for their rare drops so they could sell them.  The lack of money input for me was a breaking point.  I stopped lvling my white mage once I hit 35 so that I could farm for money.  I spent nearly a month farming in order to get all my spells and equipment up to date.  That is too much time spent for me.  I rate this a 3 of 10.

That's all I can think of right now.  If you have other specific questions I'll answer them as I see them.

There is a 31 day ( 1 month) trial for FFXI after that you start paying like you would any mmorpg.

Thats not free, that cost $50 bucks.  Many MMO's have real free trials, AC2, Horizons, AO, etc.  You dont have to buy anything at all, its totally free for that period of time.

Yeah, and any game that has a free downloadable trial like that is dying anyway. Seriously, AC2 and Horizons are pretty much gone.

The words "Free Trial" actualy stand for something different in the language of the mmorpg tribesmen. It means "Cry for Help" image

Wish I could think of a mmorpg that was doing well at first and offered a free trial, but I can't. All the ones that I used to play and liked still don't offer free trials. All the ones I played and hated, now offer free trials. Hmm I don't think UO has a free trial, that's odd =B Course you can buy the game for $10, how cheap do you really need to be to ask for a free trial for a $10 game lol.

Anywho, still trying to decide whether or not I should buy this game, I wanted to be a dragoon, as none of the other classes really interest me, maybe beast master, but as I understand it dragoons are way over played. =/

Maybe a beast/sam? I dunno. I like taming, and I like spears. But I hate being a common class. Hell in DAOC I played a ranger during the 'nerf' years. Yet I still did amazing as one. It's no fun to be a common class, even if you do great, it's INSANELY fun however to be a class everyone thinks is gimp, and excell with it.

Bahahaa, 1 million, thats a good one.  yeah theres 1 million character ID's not subscriprions.  And in the latest poll most people have 2-3 characters, either for other family members or mules. so the real numbers are around 300-500 thousand.  Get your facts straight before you open your mouth.  But yes pc subscribers was dropping before PS2 FFXI came out now its up slightly.  When WOW comes out most people will leave though.

    Yeah Dantes!

Maybe we are tired of you people saying how "good" FFXI is when everyone knows its crap.  Why dont YOU people leave?  We have every right to say what we want, just like you do.

Which is why PvP will suck so much. Everyone has the same skill cap if your the same level. Every person within a level gap of 5 has the same armor. There's no real way you can supe up your character to actually beat other players your level.

Over 1 million characters and 500,000 subscribers. These are official numbers. Where do you get yours? Dropping? By how much? The, maybe, 10 or 15 people you knew that didn't like the game? The people that quit the game because they just don't have the time to play it? Also, for most of the players to go to WoW, over 250,000 subscribers would have to cancel and go to WoW. Do you really think that will happen? You're basing this off of a game that hardly anybody has played, and not for very long. It's a beta game.

Actually theres alot of people in WoW beta, they have no NDA and I cant find a bad review.  Can I find a bad review for FFXI?  Oh, yes I can, this IS one.

There are more people playing FFXI, by FAR and, thus, more reviews. This is an obvious fact. Just because you can't find a bad review doesn't mean that there is none. None of this changes any of the numbers, anyway.

Well since 500,000 people applied just for WoW beta, and theres no bad reviews of the game yet (if you think you can find one, knock yerself out), common sense tells you that its probably going to take over.  Even if only temporarily.  Theres too many good games coming out that frankly have so much more going for them than FFXI.
