I tried the WoW PvP tonight for the first time. And I have to say I like it better than DAoC's.
But before everyone gets mad at me, let me explain. Because I'm not here just to bash DAoC. It's still my favorite game.
I just liked the way in WoW PvP there wasn't such quick chaotic fights. It was like there was enough time to figure something out. A lot of times in DAoC I've noticed that I don't have enough time to even consider a retaliation before I am dead. That just didn't happen with the WoW PvP. And I liked it.
If DAoC would fix just that one thing I think I could give it 5 stars. But I've been playing for a while and it's happened a lot that the chaos is just too much. I love the idea of RvR and the effect you have on the world with it, but a LOT of times I scream at the screen yelling, "WTF just happened?" Because I seriously don't know.
I'm not sure how Mythic could fix something like this, if it's even a concern (I admit it may be just me), but I have never enjoyed PvP more than tonight playing WoW. If that PvP were in DAoC, OMFG I would be in heaven and never leave the house again.

but....
Consider the 5 instances of combat WOW currently has...
1) WSG - You fight until one side captures 3 flags.... but if you actually try to kill other players instead of capping flags you'll be accused of turtling.... players only want the match to end quickly, not actually PvP against each other.... My son is very good at this instance, however he's a rogue and he doesn't bother trying to cap the flags at all, he goes for as many kills as he can get before the match ends.
2) Arathi Basin - The only instance that people are actually encouraged to fight.... by holding key resource points...except that the game is on a timer...and ends automatically...sometimes way too quickly if one side is dominating the other....
3) Alterec Valley - Was originally the source of epic 40 on 40 battles between the horde and alliance that took up to 3 hours , however nowdays players pride themselves on finishing it in 20 minutes....and has become a mad rush by each side to kill the PVE NPC boss mob before the other side..... at the expense of any real Pvp.
4) World PvP - non-existant on Normal servers and only slightly better for PvP servers
5) Arena Combat- New as part of upcoming BC expansion and really is Guild Wars combat....with WOW mechanics...
But what's missing the the total surprise of open warfare combat. I love how when running through a BG or PvP zone you have no idea what you'll run into. Will it be a skilled 8 man who can defeat an entire zerg? (or that you manage to take down with 2 or 3 groups like a pack of hyenas....) or a stealth group or even the rare, but really fun solo combat experiences. Its the surprise of combat that makes it the most fun.... and why I prefer DAOC to WOW.....

I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
You have never played DAoC in old frontiers have you?

Also, for those that think combat is too short then remember to max out your resists, try grouping with a support class that can up your resets. Invest in purge and avoidence of magic. All of these things will allow you to live longer.
For example, I was in the Lab this morning on my animist. 3fg+ of Albs decided to camp the stairs. I was probably on fighting them for 90+ minutes and I died only 3 times. We would push them down and they would push us back up. People would get hit on both sides but very few on either side would fall. There is an example of a long battle. We did finally push them out and slaughter every last one of the scum Battles being short is one of the reasons I hate 8 man groups. If you fight with a large amount of people, espically in a small space and a choke point, battles can last a long time. Strategy becomes involved. Healers heal and keep you rezed. PF keeps people up on power.
Of course, I've yet to PVP in DAoC, so I don't know how different things are here. But, if "chaotic" fights involving a "WTF just happened?" kind of thing is what you dislike about DAoC, go play a PVP server. Rather than wondering what happened, you'll be more focused on the likelyhood of your killer having essentially ganked you out of spite and for easy honor, like, you just are recovering after a battle or the attack you during one, or just camp you and gank you at any chance they have.
I have a problem, though, that I miss WoW, it had good memories, and as a game it's remarkably well done. The problem is Blizzard's catering to the bnet and preteen and 30-year-old-living-in-his-parent's-house kind of gamer groups (and I could rant for hours about how they fucked up so much potential making WoW "EverQuest 1.5 with PVP"). Assuming DAoC doesn't do it for me, I'll probably head back and hope for a good server, because if you don't have a mature player base, no matter how excellent the game is, the community can really make it or break it. Just hope I can transfer my warrior, leveling them up is a bitch.
