It just doensnt matter. In planetside they had ads. It didn't hurt a thing. As a matter of fact maybe they will have a video card ad or something that I would like to read.
Anyone remember those Planetside repeating sound ads? I can still remember those things, word for word. I hope Huxley doesn't have those, atleast let it be SOMETHING relevant to gaming.
True, MASSIVE ads can be quite a pain in the ass, but they also help the company developing the game with racking in more money for their developers. Take an example of Anarchy Online (Last time I checked it, was about 3 months ago). You could disable the ads if you were a paying member, and you could watch them if you were to be a free member of the game and just munching up their valuable server processing capabilities. It's a good way to compensate such inbalances. So all I can hope for is that Huxley will get audio-less advertisements that blend into the game and which can be too switched off for paying members, and allow free members to roam the wonderful fantasy world of Huxley, reaching for an ever bigger playerbase...this would be a good decision.
I don't mind ads. Servers cost money. But if they want me to subscribe as well, they will need an ad free version. No offense to the good people at Webzen, but if you want to charge for a premium service, you will have to provide a premium service. Subscription or Adverts. Not both. . Shame, I was looking forward to this title so much. Maybe I'll just wait a few years and play it when it is free.
I'd like to offer a huge QFT tot his post.
Ad's have been forced on sonys less successful game and have ruined the feel of the game and it's not fair to have an ad and make people play.
I am fine with ads, so long as they have a no ad version for paying customers. Perhaps they could have two versions? One at $15/Mo and one at something lower (or free) with ads? Seems fair to me, thats what AO did, only free accounts view ads there.
A note to anyone who thinks it ads (hehehe I am punny) immersion: it doesn't. Massive uses normal ads for the most part, they don't really look like part of the game-world because the whole point of an ad is to get noticed.
They did a artikel about this in a dutch newspaper.
it turns out that ingame ADS has no effect at all, people run by them and not even take the time to look at them because they are not forced like on TV.
Beside it ruins the atmosphere if you ask me.
Im shootin at someone at a distance, then found out it was a MARS :-p

I've thought a game should do that for a while. You have 2 servers, one with ads and one without. The one without is $15/mo and the one with is free. I think ads in games is going to be the next big thing. Video games are getting more popular and selling more, MMO's are big and some cost as much as a big budget movie. Its just common sense that game developers adapt putting ads in games. Some people won't care because it'll mean free, quality games, and for others it'll be a pain in the butt and they'll think ads in games suck. I personally don't care, if the game is good enough bring on the ads, as long as its done with taste and it doesn't hinder game play.
If the lack of ads entails no subscription/drasticly reduced subscription fees, I'm fine with it. If they're still going to be charging $15 a month, Webzen can go to hell.
You do realise these ads would be there anyway. If not RL advertisement it would be some made up ad sign. So as long as the sign fits the surrounding I have no problem at all with RL ads in games.
As long as it doesn't have any bearing on gameplay or performance I don't give a fat rats ass about in-game advertising. I'll do what I do with all other forms of advertising, I'll ignore it.
I think this might be a good thing, if they can advertise products in-game,which i dont care, then maybe the monthly payment will be lowered or non-existent. who knows
Good point...and also if ads will be screened and tailored to fit the feeling of the game.
I gotta say 1 thing guys. Why do advertisments on billboards scare you out of playing a good game? This is what
pisses me off because now there wont be alot of people to play with/kill. I mean honestly guys your not going to
play a game JUST BECAUSE it has billboards that say buy this? You don't even have to read the darn thing. And this
effects the game.....how? Re think your answers guys.... crap I feel like I am advertising this game or something lol.
I would no more pay to play a game that had ads in it then I would pay to see a movie that had a commercial in the middle of it. A free game (or free to play as in most FPS games I suppose it is a tolerable annoyance so long as it is done in a way that fits with the environment such as a BattleField map where you are in Europe or something and billboards on the streets are ads - but in a futuristic MMO that I pay to play each month I wouldn't tolerate a billboard hawking coke or pepsi - that is just stupid. Ditch the fee for monthly play and it is another story - otherwise it is a rip off plain and simple and destructive to the game's environment as well.
I agree with what others are saying, if they want billboards in their game and the game is free, sure I'll play. But if I'm paying a monthly subscription fee, then there best not be advertising in my game regardless if it is on billboards or tatooed on my avatar's ass. When it's my money, it is my game. If it is the advertisers money, then fine. But leave me and my $15 a month alone with regards to real life ads. I just don't want to see it.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
I am sure there will be other game using advertising in game as a way to make money & I am sure some company will develop software to block adds in games much like add blockers in web browsers ...
I care not for ads in-game. If I see a big sign with PEPSI on it, I'll just try to blow it back to stoneage for all I care. What worries me more than the ads would be how they planning on doing the servers. What I'm getting at is, will it be like CS, where you join a already existing 'map' with only small moving posibilities or will all be in the same 'world' as in a HUGE city where you could literally get lost? Being in a huge city would be more than funny, but I guess they going for the CS type of game. I woulden't care, I can't wait to get my hands on this game. Absolutely 10/10 in my opinion
What is wrong with some damn billboard ads? I see them everywhere I go. You don't see me going "what the hell is this crap doing here? Someone take this billboard down from this street corner!" I ignore it. Unlike some people. Mostly everyone here gets pissed off when the see some stupid little ads. How the hell would this kill your gameplay? I'm sure these ads will only appear in cities only. If it is only in the city then I'm alright with that. If it's in the battlefield then it can cause distractions which isn't so good. You either play and ignore the ads or go find another MMOFPS to play. I stay loyal to Huxley no matter what because I have never seen a MMOFPS this good and I have never seen too many MMOFPS lying around. You should be happy because this is another MMOFPS besides PlanetSide.
There are already ads all over games. Want a popular one for instance? Fight Night Round 3 has Burger King icons on the corners of the ring among other places in the game. Does it change the game at all? No. It does not effect you so it is not a big deal.
It sucks, i hope they dont do this,, everytime i had to get on the stupid HART i had to endure that stupid ass car commercial pumping through my stereo..
"well turn your stereo down!" you might say ,fuck that, like everyone else i dont play these games to have some company try to tell me what to buy by slaming it in my face every hour for a few months at a time.
i play to get away from the real world , if im seeing in game adds, they should be trying to sell me "APFSDS Warheads" for my rocket launcher or somthing.

Who says Coke and Pepsi aren't gonna be around in the future? There will always be Coke and Pepsi in this world... its not like "Snap! Its the future! Now there is no such thing as soda, beer, or guns! Now we get drunk and kill people by looking at them! Huzzah for telekinetic powers!
I think not. You're just a crybaby. C'mon, advertising in movies isn't done by comercials its done the same way! Ben Affleck drinks a Pepsi in a move = Ben Affleck lovers who watched the movie switch from Coke to Pepsi. I can't believe you would think advertising in movies would be done by commercials.... Its already happening in movies.
Oh, and Battlefield 2142 is IN THE FUTURE AND IT HAS ADS! Your point is ruined.

The plus side should be lower monthly fees.....if not I am against it. Fat cats lining their pockets with no rewards for me suck.

so they make a little extra cash on the game.. big deal..
think of it this way if they have sponserd ads they will have to keep on pushing with the game not just release and let it eventually die out.
and for those who claim they wont be playing because of this.. fine then you could not have been very interested to start of.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I think that we will see more pressure from companies to put in game ads in MMOs.
WoW has 8.5+ million subscribers. Coke has already had the TV ads in China. I think it is a matter of time before
we see items with brands on them. Imagine a nice Nike swoosh on your Spaceship or
buying a Guiness for your Ork.
