Why is the mmorpg players so touchy and opinionated?

OshrycOshryc Member UncommonPosts: 153

Because they invest alot of time and effort into what mmorpg game there playing I would assume. Most players have alot of passion for the games they play too. Seems only right ya know most mmorpgs are like a second job. Thats why most players are so vocal about there games.

Makes me think about SOE....... they should have just made a part 2 instead they have over a year of NGE P2P BETA real smart on there part NOT. Most vocal complaint on any game was the NGE, SOE you take the cake on borking a game and doing dis service to your customers.

I really believe people are fed up. The older wiser gamers are gonna leave the mmorpg space if they keep cranking out this mindless grind fest games or little kid games.  Every formum about mmorpgs is loaded with teh same complaints. Its mind boggling how devs think there users are so dumb. SOE did so much research on there big games eq2 and swg why are there games so getto?

I think its MMORPG time out time for like a year or so. I know what it is.....money thats what it is. Where are the companies that do things because they love to?

SWG was sub consciously the final straw for that generation of grinders. I havent properly committed to a grindfest since because frankly, Life is short and what Im playing isnt SWG. Every new game that comes out is the same old crap in a different wrapper - You wanna just give up and play WoW because everyone else does.

I stress myself out rotating resubs so like a lot of people I might just sack the genre all together.

well, everyone knows SOE sucks .. nothing revealing with that opinion ...

as far as the grind fest ... if done well, intelligently, and with depth ... i dont think any old school mmorpg player would mind ( too much) ...

its actually the younger kids entering the market who cant stand grinds .. lower attention spans and all that,  .. and used to faster paced games ... the grind to them is unbearable ...

The grind, to me,  is important ... to an extent .. in that it forces you to firmly place your feet in the ground and spread roots into the MMO you've committed yourself to ... with the grind comes the addiction .. with the addiction come the communities ... now the important part is to build ways to constantly reward players, for the time they put into the grind, and keep it fresh and interesting at every turn ...

what SOE did was the EXACT opposite ... jedi grinders wouldnt gain any rewards except the skills they had expected ... ( a grind isnt as fun when you already know EVERYTHING You will recieve, you need dyanmic rewards and scenarios )

the LOOT system in star wars galaxies PRE-CU, CU, and NGE was the WORST .. the absolute WORST i have ever seen in my life ...and i've played quite a few mmorpgs, you would fight some mobs for half an hour only to recieve .. NOTHING .. and worse yet .. an ugly hat that you had a better chance of looting off a level 1 mob !!! the rares were either TOO rare .. or too abaundant ... ( dragon pearls, GDK scales) they never perfected or attempted to perfect a middleground drop rate ...

and worst of all the MOB mechanics in game were just so tedius and boring ... no depth .. purely shallow kill and burn ...there wasnt any real PULLING strategy ( cept maybe for dragons and higher end mobs) ... we already addressed the loot .. and the interdependency between classes was NON-EXISTENT .. in old SWG all you needed was a combat medic and 2 jedi and you could kill anything ... CU SWG all you needed was a gang of jedi .. and in PRE-CU swg all you needed was a gang of bounty hunters ... no variety .. no strategy in planning your group out ...

sure for certain dungeons you had a little bit of a twist ... like pre-cu and CU ... the DWB and such were all about FEIGN DEATH ...so instead of a bunch of jedi .. youd take a bunch of smuggler/bh with a coupla of jedi tanks ..

SWG was never really a GOOD game ... all it had going for it was the star wars franchise .. i played cuz i loved to imagine myself as a bounty hunter ... the game was always bearable .. with the community being what made the fun .. the community and housing ...and killing jedi as a bounty hunter ( the REAL reason i played )

combat .. was ALWAYS a grind in SWG ...

Sure, I'm bitter...hell who isn't? Have you seen the MMOs that have hit the market over the past 6 years? Slim pickens my friend. I used to be bright-eyed and full of rainbows and sunshine years ago, but this industry is in sad shape. I just want things to change. I want game developers to make games that actually take thought to play. I want depth and complexity. Stick around long enough. Get burned hot enough. This industry will turn anyone into a troll eventually.

    Peace

you hit the nail on the head with younger people hating grinds (myself being one of them)

one reason why i am looking foreward to AoC, i think that the twitch gameplay will mean a lot less repetitive grind and a lot more engaging expirience

yeah thats pretty much all thats left to do nowadays. Everyone is just waiting for the next big thing and either bored to death with their current MMO or forcing themselves to play WoW.

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

Because so many developers are chasing the money rather than trying to make a good game first and foremost.

Grinding is great as long as there's something to distract you from it every once in a while.

Personally i liked L2 alot because of its grind, took about 3 months to hit level cap instead of 2 weeks like more other MMO's.

Feels more like you earn something when you actually have to put time into it, instead of just having lvls and gear thrown at you.

    Just my $0.02
  • It's because everyone has their own opinion on what is fun to them.  For example, the best game I've ever played, by far, was Diablo 2.  Now, I know this game is not an MMO in the strict technical sense of the term, but it did have many MMO concepts, such as persistent characters and loot variance.  To me, the most exciting part of the game was building my character with the best magic find builds and equipment, then to go treasure hunting for gear which I then sold on ebay.  It's the most fun I've ever had, but to others, this is a great sin to them.

It's funny, though, to look at the next game I played, which was SWG.  Coming from D2, with such loot centric and treasure hunting gameplay, I found myself a bit turned off to the player economy.  However, I gave SWG a chance and ended up having a complete blast building up an architecture business to the best on the server with multiple accounts, multiple harvestor fleets, and an intricate supply chain and distribution system.  It sounds a bit wacky, but it was robust enough so that you needed a bit of intelligence to pull off the operation as well as lots of time gathering the resources, grinding the skill requirements, and timing the launch of the business.

Since then, I have yet to see a game available which meets the complexity and fun I've had in the two games mentioned above.  Wow implemented bop, which made it worthless to treasure hunt, and wow minimalized crafting, so there was no way I could set up a business.  So to me, I get a bit touchy because Wow has set the standard for dumbed down MMOs, and I'm concerned that I will never again have the opportunity to build up a great business, or make the best treasure hunting character you can make.  To me, those are two vital activities in an MMO, so I find myself very turned off to the current offerings of MMOs.  However, there's also lots of other people who are ecstatic that people with my interests are no longer able to enjoy these games because what I find enjoyable causes them anguish.  Therefore, I will often be at odds with other players since our motivations for playing these kinds of games are drastically different.

a large part of their users are that dumb actually, not in an overall manner but concerning the degree
of totally obeying mindless acceptance ("we do to the dev's pleasure, they know what's right")

Why are mmorpg players so touchy and opinionated?

Sorry just stepping under your generalization.

The problem is that every MMO HAS to compete. They can't co-exist the same way that offline games can. Why? because MMO's require a subscription fee, and noone is willing to pay for more than one or two at a time. Also, because people want to spend what free time that they have playing thier MMO of choice. Its hard to find the time or money to play more than one at a time. So when you find a game you like, you try to get others to play it, because playing in an empty world is NO fun. You want to get everyone (at least the nice people you meet) away from a game that you don't like and into a game that you do.

As far as SWG goes....well thats what happens when you have a great game, an incredible user-base that loves the game, and then you try to change the formula....its idiotic, and GREED will ruin a good game FAST.

And to answer the question of the OP "what happened to the companies that do things because they love to?". Well, read the forums those games are being flamed because they don't look as good as others or because they are different....People say they want different, but then they flame games that don't follow the mold.....Whatever are the devs to do???
