The good and the bad

RaunuRaunu Member UncommonPosts: 480

While I sit here checking my mail every day waiting for my beta invitation to arrive I find myself reading these forums every day. Wanting to know more and more about the game. To all the current testers out there I want to know what your take on the game is.

What are your favorite parts of it so far?

How are the graphics, animations and detail to armor/landscapes/characters?

What are your least favorite parts about the game?

Is finding MOBS to kill easy?

Are people in the community nice?

How are the quests?

And finally do there seem to be alot of mobs with the same skin just with a different name?(like DAoC)

Thats about all that I can think of right now. If I think of more questions I'll post them, I would love all the information you can give me about the game. Thanks for all your help

im new to the game too, but ill try to answer a couple.

graphics are so smooth and nice, the only problem with them that ive heard anyone say, is the lack of customization. u will look alot like every other same race/gender/class , almsot identical save a few different hairstyles. the widely accepted 'reason' for this is; to drasticly reduce lag of loading models in huge sieges/wars

i just got in 3 days ago , so the community i cant judge, it was a massive pre-wipe pk fest cuz noone cared about losing exp or items. will be much different now, so im guessing..the same as any game, find/make a guild with freinds.

finding mops..u wont have a problem. think running for 20 minutes in horizons without seeing a mob, then think total opposite. L2 is the latter. i only got to lvl 14 elf, and all the other races about lvl 10-12 just to check the starting cities, and they are all jam packed with monsters. never did get too far from the starting towns tho.

Well here are my impressions from closed beta.  Keep in mind I'm not into pvp a lot.   Obviously these are just my opinions.  By the way, I am really enjoying the game overall.  image

    Good Stuff~~~~

-Simply the best character models in any mmorpg I have seen past or present.  This also includes their movement, emote, and combat animations.  Lots of attention to detail.  Seeing characters with long hair waving in the wind is a neat touch.

-Large selection of monsters.  Imagine about 30 different models for every 1 that FFXI has.  They are mostly very well done as well.  Good level of detail and some really unique ones.  I especially like the Black Willows in the dark elf swamp.  They look like old dead trees with big faces on them and skeletons and parts hanging from their branches.  When you start out most of the monsters are pretty basic but as you level they really get neat.

-One huge seamless world with no loading or zones.  The world is very open allowing you to run on and on without encountering zones or walls.  There are big hills and mountains, lakes, swamps, rivers, canyons you name it.

-Large selection of skills for each class that have very significant effects on combat.

-Some really neat classes unique to each race.

-I have encountered almost nothing in the way of bugs and the game runs amazingly smoothly on my computer.

-By far the best music I have heard in a mmorpg.

-Good sound effects in general.  Seperate sounds for when you block with your shield, when your armor absorbs most of a blow or when you make or take a critical hit.  Ambient sound of insects, birds, and water flows.

-Huge variety of looks from armor and equipment.  Unlike EQ where there is one leather, one chain, and one plate look per race L2 has a huge variety possible per character and more are being added with each chronicle.

-A strong penalty system for characters that random pk.  This is not anti pvp mind you, there are no penalties for engaging in pvp with someone who fights back or in a clan war or siege.  Unless you die of course, then you lose some exp and have a small chance to drop an item.  People who just kill afk players, or someone who has no desire to fight back are punished accordingly though.

-Monsters are plentiful and you will never (other then opening day in the newbie areas maybe) have a shortage of monsters to kill.

-You can advance and have lots of fun both solo and in groups.  Both options work well.

    Bads~~~

-The community has a very significant crowd of people who are largely a waste of air.  Unfortunately this crowd is attracted to most pvp games and tend to give pvp a bad name in general.  There are some great regular pvp and rpers as well though if you can wade through the rest.  At least for now you can expect half the audience to have names like xXxSexyGriefKingxXx or L33tElfRaper.

-Limited physical customization.  As has been said before you only get a choice of 2 faces per race/sex and 2 hair colors.  The hair styles however really do shine in this game.  There are 4 choices for males and 6 for females and they are significantly different from one another and most are very well done.  Also as you level up the large selection of armors helps to distinguish the characters a bit.  Still they could have used more faces and more hair/skin color customization.

-Exp is often considered a major grind in the game.  I don't mind this much myself but many people do feel it takes way to long to level up.  I think if your just playing L2 to get to the end game and sieges and care nothing for the pve along the way you will be disappointed in the game.

-Monster AI doesn't appear to be anything special, though its not horrible either.  Middle of the road at best imo.

-They could add some more benefits to grouping to encourage socializing and grouping.

-The chat system is horrid.  You get one tiny chat window that you cant even resize horizontally with cumbersome chat commands.  There is no /reply function.   There is no way to scroll back up to things you have typed incase of mistells or anything like that.  All msgs, combat, system, or otherwise share the same chat window with your regular chat.

-The chat in windows for merchants, quests, and such often wraps in the middle of words instead of between them making it a bit of a pain to read through general windows.  This is minor but still kind of a pain.  I think its because the game was made in Korea and they didn't take this into account when translating.

-Im not sure how happy the casual gamer will be with L2.  With the large amounts of time required to level and much of the high level pve geared to raid style battles this may be tough to enjoy for people that cant sit down to play for 6 hours at a time.  I usually play in fairly long blocks of time so it doesn't bother me but I can see how some may not like this.  The one advantage I see for the casual gamers is the fact you don't need to wait for or try to put a group together if you only have a short time to play.  You can jump right in fighting stuff solo to make some money or exp with very little time.

Well thats all I can think of right now and I am sure some people would have different opinions on the things I listed but this is just my opinion to help give you an idea.  Good luck and hope you give it a try.

  • fulmanfufulmanfu Member Posts: 1,523

kugeln, i woudlnt worry unless ur comp is very old. i ran the tiawan beta on a p3 550 with a gforce2 mx or some crappy graphic card. didnt run great but good enough to play.

they are trying to decide what servers are what on the main forum. so far its like this
    server 1 pvp/lln1 players
    server 2 normal
    server 3 hardcore pvp?
    server 4 euro/roleplay server

im guessing a few more srever will be added, i think alot of people will be jumpin in this beta

Misti, thank you for the incredibly detailed description. I appreciate you taking the time to post such an indepth post. Thanks so much. Based on your description it sounds like a game that I would LOVE. Plus I'm into the whole politics thing. I would love to get to a leader postiton in a powerful guild or alliance. I love to play around with politics, plus in this game your decisions might actually have an effect on other guilds. I'm really excited about this game.

Thanks for the info misti image.

This looks like it will be the game for me. Huge massive castle sieges and PvP are 2 out of 3 of the coolest things i think are in MMORPG's image.

I've heard as well it's a big level grind, although i don't mind that too much.

I was wondering what you have to do in the game to get those big dragons, that would be sooo awesome to ride! image

That made me lo irl image

I'm a n00b when it comes to pvp, only tried it briefly in DAoC, but the gfx look so damn cool in this game I gotta try it out.

Lol, I was just looking back and read where I said there were plenty of monsters and you would never have a problem finding some to fight.  That post was before they went to open beta with only 3 servers and enough people for 8+.  image

When it comes to the bad, and to be fair it's not just L2 that does this, but the creatures that players fight are stupider than rocks. I mean they just stand there until you engage them in battle, to me this is the single biggest error in mmo's today. The creator wants the payers to feel there part of a living world and they do a pretty good job with the visuals etc.. But when I can go and sit down in front of a Werewolf and it dosen't try to rip me to shreads it kind of takes away the "realism". You would think werewolves and the other creatures have somehting better to do than just stand in an open field for day on end and wait to be slaughtered. Why can't the devs make them hunt in packs, or have migratory routes?  Wouldn't it be cool to just watch a pack of werewolves chase down their prey (whatever that might be, since mmo's never really design creatures around a plausible food chain, and also typically disreguard all tenents of evolution). I realize active AIs, existing within the presistent world would tax the servers to but be quite honest without them mmo's will never be what so many new and upcoming mmo's are claiming to be.. that being next generation.

I agree bellcurve0, the creatures in most mmorps just sit around or wander around a bit and rarely seem very alive or like they have a purpose.  It would be nice if they added in that level of detail and flare.

Werewolves always attack me when I get anywhere near them so Im not sure why they wouldnt for you but what does and what does not agro really makes no sense in this game.  Its odd that orc archers arent agro but orcs with swords are.  Same for skeletons and skeleton archers, or things like zombies not agroing but horrors do.

Great post, Misti.  You sum up precisely how I feel about Lineage II.  image

I believe this sums up the entire game:

Yes, yes it does. (the link Ominis posted)

I don't really agree with much, if any of Misti's long post. However I already wrote a long review for this game somewhere on these forums. Maybe later I'll do a more updated version, my overal impression of the game however isn't anyting to amazing, it's nothing special. If this thread continues it's path though, expect MY long updated review to be coming soon. image

Just feelin' lazy atm, playing RO (yeah that's right, I'd rather play RO over CoH or Lin2 or even PS atm. =P)
