Rappelz was kind of fun, Guild Wars is amazing, but you MUST love PvP, and you have to buy the box. I have dabbled in others, but nothing blew me away. Second Life is fun if you want a TOTALLY open ended experience.
"Sir, the fish market is quickly emptying. I need you to out, get me 5 tuna, 4 blue snappers, 3, uh, Darkshore groupers, and 2 goldfish please. And then report to the docks. I'll see you there, goodbye."
You could try out DarkSpace. It's a little known Space MMO that has been going for a few years. It has an unlimited free play mode, although you are restricted in what ships you can pilot, and this is in addition to the 14 day free trial mode that allows you to access larger ships (this is accessible by redeeming a coupon, which you can do at your leisure).
I won't deny that it does have it's flaws, but the game is still in active development and most of them are already fixed in the newer version that we are currently working on.
Here is a little 30 second movie that I made. It shows one of the ship's in the game. Sorry about it being choppy, but that's due to my PC not being able to run FRAP's and the game itself concurrently too well.

GW as mentioned does require a big interest in PvP, otherwise other than the graphics it just like any other MMORPG.
Unfortunately with most free games, it seems like you get what you pay for. They are generally free for a reason, I guess.
The only MMO I have enjoyed that was actually free is Anarchy Online.
