i played this mmo, .. sure it's not as deep or saturated with immersive emotional content as other games .. but it was FUN .. and it had ACTION .. and battle was FAST ...
so ya .. i enjoyed it a lot while i played .. but sadly .. i think its destined to die
a few months ago ( as many of you may know and even posted ) marvel and cryptic have announced a partnership .. putting their lawsuits and rivalry behind them ... and are developing a new mmo ( the one they were fighting about) .. MARVEL UNIVERSE ONLINE ...
i cant see city of villains and city of heros continuing to exist ... when their developing company .. is going to produce a game, designed, to steal the entire former player base, by providing a genuine comic virtual reality to play within ....
#1 i doubt marvel would sign on with cryptic if cryptic planned to market its current superhero/villain MMO with as much enthusiasm .. and #2 i dont see cryptic keeping up with city of villains/heros when it would be an uphill battle against another product which they develope ... would be too taxing for their developers, with no real purpose since they could cut COH/COV and just syphon in all those subs + more for the marvel game ...
has anyone heard of any news about the future of COH/COV .. or read any statements from cryptic on how they will handle this IN-HOUSE conflict of franchises?

Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
Yeah CoX is dying on its own. You can see this in the NCSoft reports, the absence from E3, the absence from stores, and the lack of interest in these forums (threads hang around for months). I did not see one copy of CoX at best buy last night but you bet I saw hundreds of WoW copies an d posters for Burning Crusade.
Working on the MArvel MMO is a smart move. They know CoX is really stagnant. It is not adding more members then the number of ppl quitting according to reports. They are doing the right thing really. From this point all they need to do is 'coast' on CoX. Add some minor features here and there. I'd still like to see more powersets get added. That would've kept me around a bit longer. I was really burned out before but I did hang around for a month or so just to level my EM/ELA brute to 50. So yeah the little things like costumes, powersets, etc will keep folks around. Persoanlly I dont see how nerfing trollers will help them- I think they need to focus on handing out buffs and making all the ATs attractable and fun to play. thats just how I see things...
that was taken from the pres release..... persnally, I dont plan to go Vista until I have to, so as much as I like the idea of this game, if its aimed just at vista and the x-box 360, I most likely wont be on board for it.

Marvel Universe Online is years away right now, so CoX has little to worry about from it. Besides, why would one superhero MMOG kill another? There are many fantasy based MMOGs out now not just one.
I don't think CoX is dying, there are always people on when I play at odd hours. I never have trouble getting a team if I need one and usually within minutes of turning my LFT on I get a whisper and/or invite. Could be specific just to Infinity since that is the only server I play on.
I think too many people compare this game (and others) to WoW's vast subscription numbers. You don't need millions of subscribers to be successful, heck you don't even need 100k to be profitable.
actually I just go by the NCSoft quarterly reports mainly. CoX has consistently lost members since launch. It has never topped 194k since launch even when CoV released (last I checked they sunk down to 171k- not bad but still decreasing).
I recently quit after playing since launch and do not miss it at all. The only players left are the people that I have seen in the game for a long time. There's no new influx of ideas of players. All you have is a base of players and their little cliques who powerlevel each others alts.
To me, the game really went downhill with the inception of PvP. Now I know theres a lot of people out there who attest to the fun of pvp in COX, but just because they are more vocal does not make them right (see Taliban, for example). The game was concieved with the idea of slipping PvP in later, but the mechanics of PvP effectively neutered every single AT to make them playable in PvP. Enhancement Diversification, while being notoriously unliked by the players, was not the first cross-AT nerf. That happened with the nerfing of Hamidon Enhancements at the behest of numbskulled PvP Arena whiners back in Issue 4. So once the green light for nerfing an ENHANCEMENT went into place, Nerfing them all was the next logical step.
In every subsequent interview with a developer, when asked about the lameness of the PvP system, each developer alluded to "changes" to make PvP more palatable (the most recent of these interviews was with Matt Miller on Oct 16 in which he mentioned a crafting system (FINALLY) for COH in which players can design their own enhancements....am I the only one who sees the irony and potential disaster this is?
I felt bad when I left the game because I did make some very close friends through it, but every time I logged into the game for the last few months, I see them with several of their alts on different accounts padding missions to PL and skip through as much content as possible. While I have heard that PLing is fun for these players and that they contribute to the overall goodness of the game by having several accounts, it is a detrimental activity for the community. It shows COX to simply be a farmland that the casual or new player cannot participate in. It absolutely destroys morale and offers nothing in the way of adventure. See many of the comments from the posters here about how they got "bored"--you would too when half the game population is parked at a mission door while a few players reset missions over and over. Cryptic has often mentioned that they frown down upon the practice, but I cannot take them seriously. I have seen Botters and exploiters in other games get their IPs banned , but Cryptic either does not have the sack do the same or the commitment to stop the practice. They simply change powersets and enhancement values to curb the problem-not go after the ones causing the problem.
I do believe the Marvel MMO will be a better game because Cryptic has already learned much from their mistakes in this game. I am sure COX can look forward to a few new changes bundled together as "Issues" in the future. Here's my prediction: New Costumes, New Banners for SG bases, and maybe a fix to the soundloop and lag problems. Really, the lag problem thing is slowly taking care of itself with the withdrawl of the player base.
Just a quick OT update for Termite. Cricket recently mentioned they have located some of the problems causing lag. Double XP event thread
"The lag certainly has been an issue. We've been keeping a close eye on the situation while we continue to work on it.
I wish there was an easy fix. I'm sorry to say that there isn't one, but we do consider this to be HIGH priority. It hasn't been placed on the backburner whatsoever, but it is going to take some more time before we reach the end of that rainbow. We're making progress on our end, and we can't wait for you all to see it. We're going to slay that lag dragon and tell him what for. "
/em bathes in light that I was right all along versus all the naysayers that said the game had no issues just because "my six computers run fine so it must be your computer".
So back on topic:
Also, I hope MUO isn't released in a year(highly doubt that) because Vista needs so much work and low-end/mid-range systems need to be more common that can support such an OS. Either that or release too soon and have a very small playerbase. But why it will work with the 360 and not WinXP is beyond me. The 360 doesn't have DX10 support does it? Only if MUO is released about 3 years from now would it make sense to have it exclusively on Vista. I'm certainly not upgrading to it until at least a year after it's official release even though my current system can support it.

Appreciate it tute. I haven't had significant issues with lag for the most part but most of my SG and friends did. No amount of modifying visual or audio settings seemed to change it for them and I would often analyze system info from their computers to check for malware, system service clogs, etc.
It's kind of a dead issue for me because of what so many others have pointed out: theres really no depth to the game. Maybe inventions will help this, but I doubt it because it seems like all you're really doing with inventions is slightly modifying your combat abilities--and thats whats been annoying people in the first place. Its ONLY combat. Over and Over and Over.
Yeah, I hate to say it but it does seem more of the same. After reading what Inventions really are, kinda ticks me off now. Basically you can make anything that is currently a reward in the game. Besides Wings and Trenchcoats, that was what Veteran Rewards were...something that existed in the game already(e.g. temp powers) and they provided a twist to give it to you in a new way. Not really anything new like a powerset or gameplay mechanic. I also see two problems, one, if these new Inventions basically give us back power we had pre-ED, then you will have PO'd people that don't want that back and the other half saying what was the point of ED then or two, with ED in place you will only see very minimal/unnoticeable gains with each Invention kind of like the thing CoXers complain about WoW(grinding and grinding and grinding to just get that extra 1% bonus).
Oh well, good or bad I will find out what it is all about since I still have two time cards I have yet to use. I'm definitely more excited about this next Issue than I was about I8. Like the Warcry article said, if CoX wants to keep it's current subscriber base they will need to add significant content to their relatively aged game because 2007 will be a big year for new MMOs. I hope they do something like Station Pass from SOE so I can pay a minimally higher fee for CoX and Tabula Rasa(can't wait for this game).
