No one cares about Diablo2 anymore. People arent running to the store to buy it so I doubt theres any programmers even working on it. Besides that Im sure Blizzard learned from that experience. Now I didnt say WoW was "great" who are you quoting? Yep it might have hackers and other things but I doubt it. Have you even read the beta player reviews? "this game has virtually no bugs" WoW has no NDA, this means they have nothing to fear about people saying "it sucks dont buy it." Guess why, cause it doesnt suck and no one has said it sucks thats played it, go read the reviews. I see new posts every damn day saying FFXI blows and people are pissed off for having wasted 50 bucks on crap. Thats not my opinion its a fact.
Another thing: I have to wonder with all the "im quitting FF" posts and other posters defending it to the death on various MMO boards, does anyone even play it.
Heres a brief list of FFXI quitting or crappy reviews that are recent. Took me all of 5 minutes, if that, to find. First 5 pages on MMORPG.com, and first 4 pages on IGN.com. Coulda got alot more but im tired.
I don't hate FFXI. I just think it's hilarious that some people are so willing to defend a game that CLEARLY ISN'T FUN, just because of their weird japan fetish or dedication to the series. Final Fantasy 8 wasn't a good game either, but I've heard the stupid little Otaku kids defend it like there's no tomorrow. There ARE fun MMORPGs... I promise. Some day, you too will see this.

"CLEARLY ISN'T FUN" to you my friend. We need to make that distinction so we don't act like certain other people. I don't hate FFXI either but no longer play it for my own reasons but want to inform those that are reading this and other threads why I or we don't like it. Getting into flame wars doesn't accomplish anything and isn't constructive. Know what I mean?

I found FFXI to be pretty terrible, not only do you need to keep recreating your character until you get the right server in order to play with your friends, but when grouped with people of a different level the XP penalty gap is ludicrous, to the extent that we'd be forced -not- to group whenever there was a level gap greater than one. (edit: I know about the world passes, and I'd like to tell Square where I'd like to shove them)
What they were trying to accomplish with this I have no idea, because it's pretty easy to twink out your friends by using a high level character to heal or buff them when you aren't grouped.
In addition, it has a very clumsy interface, the kind of no-frills user-unfriendly interface that you would expect for a console port. I don't recall if I was ever able to convert it to a WASD control scheme, though the way chat and the menus worked this might have just produced a greater problem. I've heard it's a good interface if you use a gamepad, but I found the most comfortable way to operate the interface was keyboard only(as in, ignore the mouse altogether; it has rather limited functionality in FFXI).
To play FFXI you need to create a PlayOnline account, and you have to move through several screens of the PlayOnline service before the option to even play FFXI comes up, ever single time you want to boot the game. This entire system is far less user friendly than just about any MMORPG account management I've ever seen, and once I performed the appropriate voodoo to actually quit the game I still received a bill about -3- months later. Apparently this was a one-time fee, delayed payment for the first month(there is no 30 days free, AFAIK), but it was worrisome nonetheless.
All in all, I would say that Square ignores a lot of MMORPG conventions, but not in any good way, instead ignoring many convenient or necessary features that are standard in other MMORPGs, and giving us a clumsy interface from start to finish. There's an excuse for that interface when you've got less than a dozen buttons, no mouse and no keyboard, but on the PC it's a crying shame.
