Video Card for games

ZandredZandred Member UncommonPosts: 46
Hi Im not very good when things are about computer knowledge so I was hoping i could find help here. Im not sure if this would be the right forum area to ask this question but It seemed right so please dont get angry if its in the wrong area.

Im looking to upgrade my video card from a Ati Radeon 9200 PCI slot card.

Yes i know the cards old but untill i can get enough for a new tower I was hoping to upgrade enough to keep up to the newer games.

I was hoping to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814145087 this card but im not sure if this would work very well. Is there any normal PCI non express cards that will work for a pixel shader 2.0?

In case the links bad the graphic card name for the above is "CHAINTECH P-FX20 256MB Geforce FX5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card"

Any responce would be helpfull again im looking to see if its pixel shader 2.0 compatable and if not will this work for the newer end games?

Thanks in advance.

NO!!!!  Do not get a 5200 series card.  In fact do not get a 5xxxx series card if you are planning on playing any newer games, especially MMO's.  Already the Nvidia 6xxx series is becoming outdated as game technology increases and the newer Direct X 10 cards are being released.

Spending $75 on that card would be the biggest waste of money you will ever have spent.

    Lanmoragon is right.

    I have a 5500 and it's fine with 1.0 shaders, but really struggles with 1.4 or 2.0.

Looking at the site you linked before, this page has a good selection which may be better for you:

The GeForce 6600LE isn't bad, but not as good as the GT version. Even the LE version is a better choice than a 5200. The 6600GT is really cheap here in the UK, and our hardware is usually more expensive than most places. That's a good budget card which should get you reasonably good performance.
I don't really know anything about ATI cards so can't really comment on them.

And no, I don't think there are any PCI cards new enough to support pixel shading. PCIe or AGP only.

Zandred, check out this one for ATI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102053

I would go with the ATI until you get a new comp, since that comp was made with an ATI card.

    "Kaneda! What...do you see?"

    Hi

Been having the same dilemma myself on whether to upgrade my gfx card which is currently a gf 6600gt (which incidentally i bought to replace the god awful 5200fx card i got with pc).

Not sure whether ill get much improvement with upgrading to another agp card possibly the gf 7600gs over my current one withthe games i intend to play which is prolly gonna be LOTRO or Vanguard and WAR.

    Any suggestions ?

PS im in the uk if it makes a difference  and my mobo is not pci-e compatable

Greatness is difficult to appreciate from close up. The great mountain on the horizon is only the ground when you are standing on it.

In the UK I find www.scan.co.uk has some of the best deals around. And they normally do free delivery too, unless you want it on a specific day/time.

The problem these days is that everywhere is pushing the PCIe cards and it looks like AGP ones are going to be hard to find in a few months.
