KillerNIC? LMFAO!!!!!

MentatMentat Member UncommonPosts: 516

Am I the only one laughing when I see this ad for "killerNIC" for $250???! That is the most insane thing I have ever ever ever seen.

Considering your internet connection speed is but a fraction of your actually NIC speed. Let's say you have a t1 line or a super fast cable connection - the max speed you would EVER get out of this is 1.5mb - even the slowest NIC is 10mb. You can buy a GIGABIT NIC for like 20 bucks.. why would you spend $250 on this thing?

Buyer beware... You NIC should not cost as much as a high end video card...

    Network Interface Card

The theory behind the killer is much like that of a graphics card. Take the load off of the main processor which has the potential to let your game run faster since it gets a little bit more out of your CPU. The prblem is that network data for online play is such a tiny amount and has such a minor effect on the CPU load of current CPUs that the Killer is pointless.

Using the card for VOIP processing does sound like it could help some lower end systems, but no one is going to buy a NIC this pricey for a cheap of the shelf pre built.

Not to mention the KillerNIC has terrible firmware that causes a lot of systems to crash on boot up.

aye if you're willing to spend that much on a non-video card componet you don't need it.  granted it was said to have a nice UI which let you prioritze traffic on lan, and out to the net.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

from all the tests I read the biggest power this card offers, is the smoothing of lag spikes.

even if you have a duo core processsor, many games are not optimized, neither is the system, so a "regular" nic card can not offer the same as the killer-nic.

a comparable nic card like the killer as used by professionels (not for gaming) ranges more at 1000$ and upwards....

oh, and btw, I do only have a 0.5 mbit connection, but I notice a difference between a 100mbit and a 1000mbit network card!

so a cheap 10 mbit card will absolutely not due the trick!

There are 10/100 cards faster than new 10/100/1000 cards. The difference in speed is often better written drivers and the related software. Some are "softNICs" which although are on a card still use CPU power like a "softMODEM". If you are always using under 50% the bandwidth then it is most often the software that is giving you the boost, unless you went from a softNIC to a hardware card.

You totally missed the point - which is - the insanity of paying $250 for a NIC.

If you did this to smooth some lag issues - that is practically retarded - unless of course you have money to throw away but, if you have that much money your system would be up to date enough that a "killerNIC" wouldn't make a noticable difference.

    Tha's all I'm sayin.

Ye canny mess with the 7 Layer Model.

IMO you can have fastest NIC in the galaxy, but if serverside or routers inbetween are laggy then that lag is passed to you, the customer with the fat wallet.
