A new pilot with some questions!

KoalanKnightKoalanKnight Member Posts: 26
Okay.. so.. I've served 3 days under the Flag of the Slaves.  Coo' and coo'.  The Help channel is helpful.. people are insanely nice.. but.. it's a little crowded.. so I figured I'd go to this forum.

1.  Salvage skill.  Is it decent for someone going mostly combat?

2.  Where's a good spot for a new pilot with a Mir Destroyer loaded with Artillery to hunt random NPCs without going into LowSec? ... not ready to risk my PvP skills yet.

3.  Corporations.  I gathered they're like guilds.. how do you find one though?  Space is a bit... vast.

It is a good skill to have for combat PCs, but in the beginning, you probably have higher priority skills to train, like your destroyer, gunnery, navigation, learning, and mechanic skills.

    2.  Where's a good spot for a new pilot with a Mir Destroyer loaded with Artillery to hunt random NPCs without going into LowSec? ... not ready to risk my PvP skills yet.  Best bet is 0.5 systems in a destroyer.  Look around on the system map, you should be able to find some nearby.

    3.  Corporations.  I gathered they're like guilds.. how do you find one though?  Space is a bit... vast.
Although any decent sized corp that allows newbies in would be fine, the problem you are going to run into is your characters age.  Some will not accept you unless you are over 14 days (trial period) old.  Check out the EVE recruitment forums to get a better idea of who is looking for someone like you.  Note also that when you dock in a station, you can view corporations that have offices there as well as apply for membership.  You might consider EVE Academy, from what I hear they are pretty good about cycling newbs through and teaching them the ropes.

    1)  Useful but you have a lot of other skills you should be learning first:  Navigaton to 5, Engineering to 5, Mechanic to 5, Shield skills to 3 at the very least, Gunnery skills, Drone skills, etc, ad nausium.

    2)  I don't recommend destroyers unless your eventual goal is to be an interdictor pilot.  For a little bit more money you can be flying a cruiser which is both more powerful and more forgiving of mistakes.   Anything a destroyer can do a Tier 2 frigate can do almost as well and a cruiser can do far better.

    3)  Corporations:

Look in the recruiting forums here

Add the corporation  - recruiting channel in game (under channels button on the left nav bar)

Look in the recruiting forums on Eve's official forums

Look up Eve University and Agony Unleashed.

    Hope this helps!

Yea I am also in the same boat and looking for a good corp to join.  My question is what is a good way to earn money?  I do a lot of missions but can seem to break 1 mil.  Is mining a better way to get cash?

Don't worry about making your first million. It took me quite a while to make mine as I always was trying to upgrade my ship to make it better. Since you are into missions the best thing would be to continue doing them as they increase your standings. It  get's boring no doubt, but with the higher the standings, you gain access to higher level of agents. I'm not sure what agent level you're using now but once you've reached level 3 and upwards, the mission rewards (and loots) will earn you millions every single day.

Alternatively you can learn to be a trader and earn an average of 5 mil per sale

p.s. Mining alone whilst in an NPC corporation is a waste of time. If you do intend on going the mining route join a mining corp that has frequent mining ops and pay good rates for your ores.

Check out the Eve-Online forums for recruitment.  There are many daily posts from all sorts of corps looking for all sorts of people, and vise versa.

As far as cash, have you decided what you want to do in the long run? Mission running is a good start as many of the skills also translate into other weapon-using professions.  Mission running is slow at first until you hit lvl 3's.  You can hurry that process by training your Connections skill.  This will improve your standing with your NPC corp and allow you to move up the agent chain that much faster.  Once you get to lvl 4's you have a pretty good source of isk for as long as you want to use it.  Then you can refine your mission-running (Social) sub-skills such as Negotiation to earn you more money per mission or sub-connection skills such as Military Connections to earn you more loyalty points per mission which will eventually translate into isk when you cash em in.  The same can be achieved by joining a corp that has a mission-running branch.  Sometime these corps have a high standing with a particular race or faction which may aid your climb while providing you with teamwork as many of these corps like to gang for missions.

I don't have much experience with mining.  I would suggest though that if you are going to go this route, get yourself an appropriate corp asap.  Established mining corps will take you along on mining ops, many times provide protection (in the case of low-sec), refine your ore for you (until you have the skills to maximize your effort), use their experience to help you with both info, and  literally via mining gang mods (to once again get full use of your time and effort), and lastly provide you with company during a very boring, though lucrative, profession.

I have a lvl 4 mission runner myself, in an NPC corp, who's only purpose is to fund my PvP char.  This past week I: Ran approx 1 or 2 missions a day or every other,  did one Storyline mission offered to me for an extremely nice implant I sold, cashed in 60k lp points (20-25 missions worth for me) for four +3 implants I also sold.  This translated into approx  265 million isk.  The funny thing is many mission runners will make much more than that in a week as they have good agents (started my lvl4 with a quality of -14) and much better agent-influencing skills.

    1.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I picked up the Salvage skill and I hardly use it.  Salvaging is better done when you dedicate everything to it.  IE.  equipping a destroyer/cruiser with a bunch of salvagers and salvaging wrecks.  Don't waist your precious skill training time on it.

    2.  Kill missions in 0.5 space.   Look for Security, Internal Security, Command, Intelligence, and Surveillance agents with the highest quality possible.

This site will help you find agents.  http://www.eve-agents.com/

This site will help you equip your ship to complete the missions http://eveinfo.com/

    3.  EVE-O recruitment forums, 'Show Info' random people and check what corp they are from or when you dock in a station check the offices.

Finally my advice to you if you wish to go the combat route.  Join a corporation that owns a part of 0.0, forget what anyone told you saying you need 10M+ SP to fly a battleship effectively and get yourself into a battleship.  Now start ratting 0.0 to make isk.  Keep training skills till you can do this with relative ease and then train for interceptors so you can help out the corporation you joined in 0.0 combat.

Anither chat room to try is your empire one they will be helpfull too and understanding too they too know how crowded the help channel is.

    1.  Salvage skill.  Is it decent for someone going mostly combat? Yes it is especially if you are starting out as the Salvagable parts are valuable and with them if you want you can amke rigs to upgrade your ship.

    2.  Where's a good spot for a new pilot with a Mir Destroyer loaded with Artillery to hunt random NPCs without going into LowSec? ... not ready to risk my PvP skills yet. Well either find a 0.5 system and hunt belt rats or find a complex in high sec space tho those will be harder you will get more to do there. Alternativly try out combat missions.

    3.  Corporations.  I gathered they're like guilds.. how do you find one though?  Space is a bit... vast. Well one place to find Corperations is in the Empire channels there are also recruitment channels but i find the best corps can be found in the empire channels.

I have to dissagree with Taram, not cause he wrong. He actualy has outlined a good path but because it seems to be what we do.

Seriously here is a diffrent suggestion. Stick with your destoyer, infact buy a BPO for it they are very inexpensive  to build and outfit. Then work up on your support skills, gunnry, shields etc (as stated above).  Fit one slot with a salvager and the rest with what ever weapon you are skilled for.  Then look for the lvl1 dead space areas, these are mimited to frig and DS (not cruser or above).  Hit these, which will provide Lots of enemys=lot of fights also lots of salvage (except drones) and lots of low end equipment that can be refined for sale or to build more DS.

This will teach you 3 important things.

    1. You are going to loose ships, once you start replacing them easly you will only be PO not devistated later on when you loose really expensive stuff.

    2. No two fight will ever be the same.  You will jump into a complex and easly dispatch the bloods but the next complex (both rated lvl1) you will jump in and have 20 drones hitting you with havoc heavy missles (you won't realise that till you are sitting in your pod thinking WTF?)  If you freeze (not lag) in a battle you die, simple as that. This takes lots of battles and is not a lession you want to learn when facing a player, while a NPC will not pod you a player could.

    3. EVE is just a game, it's not a cause, it's not a crusade and it's not a mission, thats what the forums are for.

You can make your first million your first day if you do the tutorial, training missions and the Graduation Cerfiticate mission for your starting faction.

Your training missions give you about 40,000 ISK which combined with any bounties you have is enough to buy a simple beginner level frigate (Amarr: Executioner, Caldari: Condor, Gallente: Atron, Minmatar: Slasher). That combined with perhaps a free gun you found or a cheap (10,000 ISK) one you buy will get you though your first few Grad cert missions. Those will make you 800-900K ISK easily. You'll also get an implant you can sell for more.

MMMMMMm both good and bad advice there....  Yeah you absolutely don't need 10m SP to fly a battleship but you need around 4m dedicated to skills regarding a BS before you can really fit one well.  Before that you're MUCH better flying a solid PVE Battlecruiser or even a T1 Cruiser in 0.0.

Note: at 3.5mil SP I was flying a Caracal in 0.0 and taking on 950k dual BS Spawns with ease regularly.  Granted it wasn't able to take down 1.2 mil and above but with that kind of ISK coming in, given a little patience to get your BS skills up a bit you will be able to completely jump over Battlecruisers and leap right into a Battleship for Ratting in 0.0.  But overall the advice above is good.  You absolutely don't need 10m SP to go to 0.0.  Heck I helped a 1 month old newbie (Pre-Revelations) get into 0.0 in a T1 fitted Caracal and he was able to take on up to dual 650k BS spawns with no problem whatsoever.

Other races each have one or two T1 Cruisers that can do just as well if fitted properly.  And most BC's can take up to 950's pretty easily as well.

Mind sharing your setup? Im currently looking at using cruisers for 00 ratting.

    Highs:

5x XR-3200 Heavy Launchers (replace with arbalests if you've got the cash or get them as loot)

    Mids:

1x Invuln Field 1, named if you can afford it. (II once you have the skills for it)

1x Medium CL-5 Emergency Booster (Tech II Medium Boost once you have skills)

1x Rat Specific Shield Hardener (Kinetic for Gurista)

1x Rat Specific Shield Hardener (Thermal for Gurista)

1x Rat Specific Shield Resist Enhancer (Kinetic for Gurista)

    Lows:

    1x PDU

1x BCU (Tech II once you can fit them.  Also, until you have the skills to fit one you may need a 2nd PDU here)

    Drones:

    2x Light Scout Drones

Note: If you use this for PVP be aware you have no means to keep the badguys from getting away you can drive them off but not kill them.

Recommended alternate setup for PVP in a caracal:

    Highs:  Same

Mids:  1x Invuln (II if you can fit it), 1x Med Shield Booster (II if you can fit it) (Alternatively fit a 20km warp scrambler if alone), 3x Sensor Damps (II's or named)

Lows:  2x PDU (Named or Tech II)
